copperbadge posts some drabbles.

ide_cyan declares them not to be true drabbles and gets a little worked up.

I was writing drabbles before LiveJournal even existed, for crying out loud.

Oh gee. That must mean s/he/it must be right! I'd call this an anal wank, except I doubt the wanker would be able to fit anything in there at present...

What, was she abused by an oversized drabble as a child?

I mean, yes, it irritates me when words are used incorrectly. But this person is acting as though it's a personal and hideous insult of some sort.

Dude...wtf?

Ide_Cyan: Defender of language purity extrordinaire!!

If a word is not being used as s/he defines it, expect major spaz-off as she "makes certain words are used as they ought to be, and not carelessly tossed about like children's toys".

Gawds protect anyone who dares to step outside Ide_Cyan's strict pedantic laws...

yeah, but it's dumb to defend the incorrect use of a word in the name of descriptive grammar. I'm no prescriptive grammarian myself, but if that argument was used every time somebody felt like using a word incorrectly (or ^ "creatively"), I think the language would start to get fuxx0red.

Okay...I was under the impression that in most literary, i.e 'professional' circles of writing, the standard length of a drabble is 100-500 words. Any more than that is a short piece, so on and so forth.

So, liek OMG WOW!!!11 they must be wrong cause teh wanker sayz so! And they make the Baby Jesus cry, too!

Jimminy Christmas on Toast, it's not like being a few words over or under one hundred will cause you to lose something vital to your well-being. Give it a rest.

Quick! Hide your thesauruses, because heaven forbid that any word means more than one thing!

English is the wackiest language ever, hands down. I heart people that try to make sense of it, I really do... Except for the crusading types, such as ide_cyan. They just make me twitch.

It's a small thing to make such a big deal over... but on the other hand, what's wrong with calling a short piece a "ficlet" or "vignette". A 100-word drabble is an exercise in economy. I wouldn't be interested in reading a 297-word drabble for the same reason I wouldn't read a page-long haiku.

Don't think I'd expend so many exclamation marks to make that point, though...

My favorite part is that 'drabble' isn't even a word outside of fandom. Ask my English teacher cousins, and they'd think I was asking them about baby drool.

Honestly, I agree with her in the sense that I define a drabble as being exactly 100 words, so there's a twinge of annoyance when people use it to mean something else. However, that annoys me not just because I like for people to use words correctly (Though not a strict prescriptive grammarian, I agree that using the excuse that "language changes" everytime someone misuses a word is a recipe for linguistic disaster), but more for my own convenience. If I click on something labeled "drabble" I don't want to read something three, four, or five times longer than a drabble is supposed to be.

Of course, I understand that this is a personal preference and would never wank about it. Mostly because I honestly don't care enough to harass people about something so trivial. When I label my fiction I do it according to how I define the classifications, and I see no real problem with letting other people do the same without harassment.

I certainly wouldn't want someone all over my LJ attacking me, because I consider a novelette to be shorter than a novella, or because I consider a vignette a stylistic classification rather than one based on length.

I am so absolutely SICK of the "A DRABBLE MUST BE 100 WORDS!!!!" wank.

I mean, just as you think it's dead, it comes back to haunt you. Like pairings wars. Just when you think the wank about it stops, a new idiot jumps into the party.

Look, kid. I write a 250-word fic, I'll call it a drabble IF I DAMN WELL PLEASE.

I mean, they haven't passed a constitutional amendment to prevent language metamorphosis, now have they?
