Not-so-anonymous wank
A while back, Willshenilshe got an anonymous flame on one of her stories. Eventually, Kindkit owned up to leaving it. And there was much discussion in the Buffy and Angel community about feedback and niceness and stuff like that.

But that’s not what this wank is about. Not mostly, anyway.

A few days ago, Willshenilshe posted a story for the slash wedding ficathon. And, quelle surprise, she gets another anonymous flame, this one accusing her of plagiarizing one of Glossing’s stories. Glossing and Kindkit, as I’m sure no one would be surprised to learn, are quite tight.

In my personal opinion, I think the accusation against Willshenilshe is utter bullshit. But go check it out for yourself.

So at this point, (though apparently some people might have been blaming Glossing) I’m totally thinking it’s Kindkit, only I’m not sure, because everyone remembers last time, and she can’t be THAT stupid, right?

Turns out she is. She really is.

What, Glossing now owns all the rights to references to blue popsicles in the context of Oz and Xander from henceforward? Willshenilshe's story wasn't even about Oz and Xander. At least Kindkit's friendslocked her journal and Willshenilshe is laying low, so this should all blow over quickly.

One time, I wrote a story where Spike and Buffy has hot sex with handcuffs involved.

Then just a week later, I read not one but TWO stories where Spike and Buffy have hot sex, and they both mentioned handcuffs! I was appalled by the blatant plagerism and waited for other people to notice...unfortunately, I don't have the friends Glossing obviously does, because nobody said a word.

Hi! I'm going to flame this girl for no reason. Then I'll stop and lie low. Then I'll flame her again with a completely unreasonable accusation. Then I'll run and friendslock my journal because OMG I feel so bad for being an idiot.

I love how kindkit decides that s/he has to own up to hir actions, be accountable, etc, etc, remorsecakes, then turns off comments in hir post. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, she should take the heat for her jump to the conclusions. Otherwise it seems like she's just admitting to it as a way to pre-empt being caught.

From her post I get the feeling it's not "OMG I feel so bad for being an idiot," it's more "OMG people are being so meeeen to me and Glossing, and I was right 'n' stuff."

This is the same highly unusual detail (blue raspberry popsicles), used in reference to the same two characters (Xander and Oz), in two stories that appeared less than a week apart. I simply do not believe that it was a coincidence. I'd believe that it was an accident, except that [info]willshenilshe has denied ever reading the story.

WTF? Willshenilshe denied ever reading the story, so she MUST have plagiarized "Oz," "Xander," and "blue popsicle?" And then, to hide her theft, she changed all the other words, the dialogue and the context, and tossed Andrew in there? Puh-leeez.

Well, dang. Now how's anyone going to write about you-know-who, the semi-omnipotent, snarky type who keeps showing up in the later Star Trek series? Or James Bond fanfic, for that matter.

Speaking of You-Know-Who, HP fics focusing on the end of Sorceror's Stone would have to be right out, not to mention any that discuss Filch or Mrs. Figg. And Hogwarts would lose its mascot out in the lake!

Basically, she left an anon flame in response to a fic Willshenilshe wrote, claiming that the reason she was posting anonymously was because she felt that no one could criticize Willshenilshe without being jumped by her flist. Never mind the fact that what she posted was extremely flame-y. And then Willshenilshe's flist responded to said flame, telling her to get over herself, wank ensued, and finally Kindkit revealed herself as the flamer, then posted this (http://www.livejournal.com/~kindkit/44553.html).

Heh. More like she's got used to justifying being a jerk. What really boggles is why she's picked Willshenilshe as a target. Unless she's just like that whatever journal she happens to visit in; I wouldn't know, as I try to keep a healthy distance from people like that.

Willshenilshe's quite prolific, and gets a lot of feedback on her fics. According to Kindkit's anonymous flame she helpfully reposted on her own journal: Just a thought, but maybe you should write more slowly and take more care with your work. I prefer quality over quantity any day, although quantity is more popular.

Also, Kindkit's final comment at the end of her first confession: Ah, fuck it, it's not like anybody reads my fic anyway. (And yeah, that does piss me off. I think my fic is mostly pretty darn good, and it irks me that stories that are written with no care at all, that are full of cliches and poor characterization and utter nonsense, are lavished with attention and licking while mine aren't. Does that make me a jealous bitch? Yeah, probably. Does that make me a talentless moron who's never written anything but a laundry list? Don't think so.)

I think it's wanky when someone suggests disagreements are caused because someone's jealous of someone else, but in this case, I'm not the one who brought up the word.

During the first anonymous commenting incident, Willa was still going by willshenillshe. But she changed her username to willshenilshe sometime between then and now.

Sorry- I would have made that clarification while I was posted, but I forgot she had done that.

Oh! I remember that one. It was right around this time of year, too. X-Men Christmas fic involving gingerbread cookies, because you know that two fics involving christmas couldn't possibly involve gingerbread cookies without plagiarism being involved. :D

But before you do, think about how you'd feel if you found what happened with glossing's story happening with one of yours.

I dunno. An overwhelming sense of apathy? I'd be all on board the Willa shun train if she'd swiped an entire fic concept from another author and didn't at least give a shout-out in the credits, but dude - it's a single three-word detail. Even if she did get it off of glossing's fic, it's not like she stole someone's soul.

Possibly the best line out of the whole flamewar though? That's gotta be *the* stupidest thing I've ever heard of. And I live in Texas.

Ah, Jesus fucking Christ! Haven't we had enough actual plagiarism cases recently without people pulling this crap? The line from Glossing's story mentions Oz remembering his tongue being stained blue from eating Rasberry Rockets when he was a kid and he wasn't supposed to. Willshenilshe's compares Oz's personality to being cool like a blue popsicle.

Totally different images with the only connection being the mention of popsicles. This is clearly a bit of personal pissiness and Kindkit clearly express it in the most damaging manner she could. IMO, Kindkit's the only one being wanky here because Willshenilshe did exactly what she should do -- she apologized, said she hadn't read the story so didn't know the reference and that she would change the "offending" paragraph to avoid any possible confusion. She's issued a public apology to Glossing in her journal. She's doing everything we wish plagiarists would do when they get caught -- only she's only the victim of someone's bullshit.

No kidding. In a perfect world we'd get wonderful apologies from plagiarists, they'd publicly confess and forward all the positive feedback they received to the real author of the stolen stories...

I friended kindkit after her first flame because back then I liked the way she openly admitted her frustration (being a slow and nitpicky writer myself I could sympathize). Now? not so much.
