Entry tags:fandom: calvin and hobbes, ruining your childhood

Bill Watterson is rolling in his grave right now! Or bed. Or whatever.
The [info]calvinandhobbes community on LJ is normally a quiet place, where people can post their favorite old strips and wallow in nostalgia.

However, no place is free from wank, as [info]echoboom shows when hir reposts a strip made by someone else, in which Calvin gets dosed for ADD and Hobbes turns back into a stuffed tiger.

Most of the comments are along the lines of "So depressing *criez*", but [info]giley is offended:

this doesn't make sense. don't play around with things that aren't yours.

[info]pickamuffin reminds us that overmedicating children is a Serious Social Issue, and the wank begins. Watterson's anti-licensing is invoked, opinions are declared incorrect, and [info]giley's love for C&H has been ruined forever -- it may not be a large kerfluffle, but they're going at it just like the big dogs.

Must. . .not. . .wank.

The OH NOEZ! RITALIN KILLZ KREATIVITY! stuff makes me very tired. I see no difference in my creativity levels on and off Ritalin; if anything, I'm more creative WITH Ritalin because I can actually concentrate well enough to write and draw. *stab stab stabbity stab*

Word.
I remember being able to actually produce, y'know, finished drawings when I was on it, as opposed to my "very well rendered hand slowly tapering off into a half ass scribble body" series I'm working on now.

I think I'm creative enough with out it. Mom wouldn't let them put me on ritalin when they found out I had ADD (Good thing too because after some further testing they found out it would cause me to have massive seizures)I think it really depends on the child and how they react to it. for some kids it the best way to go, others don't need it,and like in my case for some it can be dangerous. medications can help in a lot of cases but i don't think the schools should try to force it on every kid with the slightest problem like they do.

I do think there's too much Ritalin going around, but that's the case with any drug that seems to be doing well, it'll get thrown at every kid. Blanket statements against it are just as stupid as putting every kid not doing well in school on Ritalin.

Also, that cartoon made me die a little inside.

Well, the strip didn't specify Ritalin. I know people who've been put on antipsychotics and even antidepressants and had their imagination killed, though.

When I was originally on meds for ADD (it was a really long time ago, and I don't remember what they were, but it wasn't Ritalin) I had absolutely no creative drive whatsoever. I couldn't write, couldn't draw... Plus I got really depressed. I think the comic is really powerful. I can understand how it might be annoying to somebody who didn't experience it like that, but lots of us did. (Don't stab me please!)

Plus like what somebody up there said, it's not even necessarily about meds. It's about discouraging the creativity and imagination of children. And that's sad whether you have ADD or not.

OK, so I can understand people getting a wee bit upset with the basic tampering of a cartoon strip. But Hobbes dying? Um, where exactly is that happening? All I see is a kid who's choosing not to be distracted and "turning off" Hobbes. Until I see a headstone with the tiger's name on it, I think people are reading way too much into things.

God, I'm stupid. I totally read that line as "in which Calvin gets dosed for AIDS and Hobbes turns back into a stuffed tiger."

And then I saw the "So depressing *criez*" and... okay fine, I should learn to read more carefully.

The issue I've got with medication is that a good number of doctors are worthless fucking scumbags. Got any problem at all? Take all this medication, and I will basically laugh at you if you ask if there are any other options whatsoever. If you have some kind of reaction or bad side effect but it's not a common one, I will insist you're not really having it at all. Have some kind of concern about the medication? Too bad, I don't have to listen to your concerns because I am the doctor and I know better than you about all things in the world. Fuck you, doc.
Oh, and fucking shrinks. Yes, of course the reason I am crying and having difficulty talking to you is that I want to waste my parents' money and cause more problems, thank you so much for being so astute. Of course I would love to discuss which colleges I want to apply to while I am having a panic attack right there in front of you. Of course I must be permanently labeled as having ADD even though when you read me the criteria for it, we both agree that I do not even fit half the number of those criteria that is necessary to disagnose me with it.

I don't know. I happen to think the problem is big enough. Some people have said things to the effect of, "Sure, its overmedicated, but..." Certainly, there are people who really have ADD. But there are also a lot of people who don't have the drive or motivation, are depressed, or are just plain lazy. I remember hearing a statistic once that 98% of the world's ADD drugs go to America. 98% percent. Unless Americans are somehow amazingly inbred, this should not be happening. It's probably mostly that doctors are usually medication-happy and surprisingly ignorant and arrogant, and parents are either too lax on their kid or just too trusting in their doctors.

I think the comic had a good point, whether its drugs or seriousness. We're expecting more and more of kids as the years go by. My father remarked that the sort of math problems I was doing in my freshman year of high school, he was doing in college. And seriously...those people need to get a life. It's not like its those decals of Calvin pissing on things, and even then, don't completely lose your shit. Geez.

On the subject of the comment itself, Stephan Pastis did a similar but way better Pearls Before Swine comic last year about overprescription of ADD meds (or maybe I'm reading too much into it and he just wanted to rip on Pat Boone. Whatever, I love PBS either way). Click here (I love Google image search! It makes my life so much easier.)
