Dark Fluff of the Sith
Some Star Wars-themed wank at fanficrants. The original poster rants about fluffy Vader, but lostpadme (brand-new journal, one entry) takes it and runs with it, naming ::gasp:: much-beloved names like author/Vader BNF fernwithy.

There's the amused/offended reactions, of course, in the personal journals of some of the authors in question.

Ah, I've finally been directly FandomWanked - my life is now complete. ;) Far as my reaction in my own journal, I was honestly more amused than offended, though I can see where I didn't come off that way.

Still, there's no wank like SW!wank. *g*

She laughing on the inside, dammit! That's why she f-locked it -- she hides her joy beneath a facade of wank. It's like...tears of a clown or something.

Yeah, one can tell she hasn't been at F_W very long. ::mocks her::

Wait...there are now complex characters in Star Wars? Do I need to see the movies again or is that just some weird fanon thing going on?

Complex is good. But it doesn't apply to every character in every fandom.

They're complex in my HEAD! Or that may just be the positions they're all in. *looks at ceiling, whistles*

Some of the books dig into motivations and so forth, but most SW characters are archetypes. They don't have a lot of depth. The most complex characters are in the KOTOR games, really.

You need to see the movies again. Watch and think.

They have everything: archetypes, a Rite of Passage in which a youth is taken into a Dark Place, has an Experience and emerges his Father's Son, redemption of several kinds, the Going Out and Coming Back.

Han Solo is a fairly complex character even in the first movie. Here is someone who is not afraid to fry a bounty hunter out of hand, but will get tangled up with idealists instead of selling them to the Empire for much easier cash. He shows a callous mercenary front, but he is life-and-death loyal to Chewbacca, and in the end risks his own life, and gets a price put on his head, to do the Right Thing.

Luke is not as complex, being swept up as he is by the events of his destiny. But, he is able to step outside that destiny, disregard the teachers who have attempted to turn him into a guided patricidal missile, and become a real boy a true Jedi. He has a deep yearning for adventure and a near-insatiable father-need. Obi-Wan plays blatently on this last.

Leia is the only one I think of as flat. She is driven solely by duty and revenge. Even this is an improvement over the callow princess who got tangled up in sedition out of pure boredom.

See, it's the grand benefit of SW fandom. There is simply no wank like SWank. I'm sure with the age of Star Trek, it's got a good amount of its own, but I believe that only SW fans are wanky enough to ignore 3/5 of known canon. Not so in this case--lostpadme has kept up, and my own twitchiness at this aside, makes perfectly coherent arguments with which I happen to disagree--but delightfully so in the fandom at large. You need to find yourself an old fandom with two-decade grudges. ("We'll see--that stuff in RotJ was a feint! It will all be erased by the... huh? They're confirming it? N-o-o-o-o-o!")

I'm sorry, I'm still boggling at the thought of the words fluffy and Vader existing in the same sentence.

...Unless we're talking about Hagrid's three-headed dog Fluffy, of course. I can see Vader quite liking a three-headed dog. As long as it was capable of eating his enemies while they were still alive. Slowly.

But then, I'm still in denial over the existence of the previews, except to note that Ewan McGregor is hot, so what do I know?

Do you see the cape? The shiny helmet? These are signs of ultimate evil in the Star Wars universe. He is not going to break down and have a father/daughter moment with Leia on the Death Star.

Except... that's exactly what he did with Luke on the new Death Star; broke down and saved his kid from his evil, beloved emperor by grabbing said emperor by the scruff and hurling him as far as he could. There was howling and screams of joy in the theater in 1983. People loved it.

Good villains are written this way for a reason. In fiction, absolute evil is usually an absolutely boring one-trick pony.

wrongly_amused here...

...Outside of the fact the portion you quoted was meant in well-meaning snarky humor, my rant had nothing to do with writing Vader one dimensional, as I would hardly suggest that he is. He wouldn't be my favorite character as he was, and I thought I made that perfectly clear. But I am sick and tired of people softening his actions simply because he is *eventually* redeemed. Sure, Vader can have complexity. He can have a vulnerable moment or two, he can have his regrets. He can return to the light side of the Force. But that doesn't erase the history of a man who slaughtered an entire order of Jedi and causd galactic suffering in his support of an oppressive empire. Anakin Skywalker spent 23 years of his life as a fairly well-intentioned individual; but he spent the other 23 as a Sith Lord. Do not understate the value of the first, but neither do the same to the latter.

And needless to say, Leia on the Death Star was a completely different situation than Luke on the Death Star. Three movies of character development has occurred that left Vader as a character conflicted by issues in ROTJ that he hadn't even faced in ANH.

Vader DOES turn for Luke, and no one in the original thread is arguing that point. However, him getting excessively fluffy before that point is rather cheapening to the moment that made the fans start cheering.

Preemptivly!Fluffy Vader: Like Mary Sue, in a way.

I was so initially thrilled to see someone actually *backing their rant up* with specific examples that I can hardly care that this looks like a grudge thang. I mean, I don't know SW fandom from a hole in the ground, so I haven't read the fics in question and don't know (and don't much care) whether or not they're actually good examples of Fluffy!Vader.

I'm just so sick of people not citing their sources! Is it so wrong to want footnotes? When someone rants about a trope in their fandom, or a cliche that they hate--I want examples! And hey, if they want to mention that someone is doing the opposite (great characterization, believable dialog, etc), I'd like to see some sources as well. The best rants (and raves) written are those that give me something to read, afterward.

I suppose you're talking about my lack of references to fanfics by particular authors? I tried to keep my references to general rewrites of certain scenes that I'd run into beforehand. I've generally been taught that it's outside the realm of etiquette to point fingers at specific authors.

I'm perfectly capable of writing an essay similar to what you've described, but I wrote this rant from the viewpoint of an exasperated but amused fan, not somebody ready to pound the living daylights out of whomever disagreed with me.
