I got wanked!!! WEE!!!

P.S. I actually don't understand this subject. Why do ordinary human beings suddenly sprout wings? Just sayin.

Magical realism doesn't require a why. That's where the magic comes in. ;-)

But hey, it's not my cuppa either, so I have no idea why people feel moved to write it. Why do people write anything? I'm sure there are as many reasons as there are writers.

What amuses me most is how many people seemed to have been a)previously unaware of the genre [subgenre? eh. whatever] and/or b)think it started in lotrips.

You're very welcome. *g*

And, eh--it's a genre like any other, like alternate realities or turning-into-girls or hell, slash, for that matter. Wings are pretty and interesting when done right; there's some really good ones in popslash. In fact, just about anything is pretty when done right, as far as I can tell. Oh, except tentacle sex. Meh!

I thought it was amusing to see how many people rushed in to defend their particular... kink. The wank is in the response.

Sajasma wrote that she doesn't get the premise (neither do I, but that's beside the point), that the stories she's seen are excruiatingly bad and pointless.

So?

That makes her untolerant and close-minded?

Can I sit in the "bad corner" with you Sajasma? We can watch the wanking go by...

Oh, this cracked me up a lot:

Gone are notions of decent characterization, and even when dealing with Real People Slash, one can go awry in this. And once again, wings, like rape, are a cheap plot device for insta-angst. (Just add tears!)

Yes, 'cause wings are just like rape! Bwa! I just....no words.

Like any genre, I've seen some bad wingfic and some good wingfic in popslash. Maybe the problem is no one's written any good LOTRIPS wingfic yet. Of course, the OP still may not like it, but that's just a matter of personal taste and not really worthy of condemning an entire subgenre as badfic. I mean I hate MPREG and there's probably some good MPREG out there, right? Right? Anyone? Bueller? ;)

Well, I was being all post modern and self-referential with that above statement. I'm not actually connecting wings with rape, but I am saying that the plot device of wings, like the plot device of rape, is used to instantly characterize a character or to force an atmosphere of angst.

Perhaps I should have been more articulate, but I'm a t00b.

I hate MPREG too. But once, when I was young and impressionable and didn't know any better, I read a good one. Of course, I haven't reread it in years, and it might not hold up, but still. I remember it as good. So there's at least one good MPREG in the world.

Do not tempt me. =b

Mpreg is one of the most innovative slash subgenres, if not the most. Some truly, um, stunning fics there. For example, Not Wanted. Also, In The Blink Of An Eye.

Badfic is the superior a legitimate art form!

*shudders* Noo, not MPREG...

If they can come up with something that's biologically reasonable and the plot makes sense without the impregnated character having a lobotomy, then fine. But the anatomy-raping pieces of femminized crap that are what we usually get need to be tarred, feathered and burned in effigy. Do they know what would happen to their precious effeminate little bottom the way they write it? He'd die. Dead like a doornail! D-E-D dead. Ick. Makes my teeth itch.

I just want to say how much I love the fact that wingfic has been a subgenre in other fandoms for months at least and not been a big deal to anyone, whereas the moment it gets introduced into LotRiPS fandom, it immediately takes on the less appealing qualities of weapons-grade plutonium and causes huge flamewars and ruffled feelings and indignant LJ entries left and right.

Seems to me that this is another instance of Fandom only being Fucking Funny when it's not you people are laughing at.

Damn, I'm gone for a day and I miss out on all the funny.

Anyway, aside from the main wank, I also noticed a potential bit of mini-wank on this thread:

...Keanu? Hellblazer?

You're not kidding. I do weep--christ, about the only thing that could've been on par with that is "They're making Hellblazer anime!" (of course, if it was a crossover and was actually Sailor Hellblazer, that could be funny...and sick...and funny)

Because you know, it's totally impossible for animation to do a decent representation of a printed story, just like it's totally impossible for the live-action film version of something like LotR to carry some of the spirit of the original books. Especially when, according to the info given, this is a graphic novel we're talking about

How much could I be paid to write a Brad Dourif Antlerfic? Like, he could get all angsty, and finish the rest of the next movie wearing a turban, and no one would notice.

It'd be a hit. I promise.

Geez, do I enjoy the fact that Dourif is under-appreciated, at times like this.
