Those who can, write. Those who can't, mock others?
It's my first wank. I've been told it gets easier the more you do it, so…

I'd like to direct your attention to The Inkslingers, a group that prides itself on being a "community for writers who are desperate to interact with other skilled, serious writers. Bad goth poetry, insipid rhyming poems, fanfic, and atrocious prose are not welcome here!"

They invite people to apply to become a member of the community by having them submit three pieces of writing, be it poetry or prose. Those who've already been voted in get to decide if the applicant can join or not. That in itself doesn't seem too bad, except that they don't seem to
accept anyone, despite some of the entrants being pretty decent authors.

And as you can see, some of the applicants are pissed when they don't get in. Maybe if they'd look at the userinfo for the people helping run the community, and they wouldn't be bitching so much about not getting in. Communities that suck as bad as this one make Jesus weep.

Ooh. This seems like a fun wank, but you're coding the URLs incorrectly.

You need to type:

Link text

Oh, how I love "better than thou" writers and their cliques communities! I especially love Rule #6:

6. Be courteous. Abusive or rude beviour will result in an immediate ban.

Clearly, this is an obscure reference to the French writer Beauvoir that the rest of us are just too illiterate to "get."

Hah! An elite comm that doesn't admit to what it's being. How sad. Critiques my ass - more like "we're better than you; let me tell you why."

See, this is why I like graphics elite comms, they at least can tell you things that aren't 100% subjective. And, you know, they're aware that they're elitist bitches...

*cringes* Oh, bad memories. I'm studying Creative Writing this year. Last semester, I had three teachers who were published authors (one was also an editor) and one who was just a critic and didn't write. The latter sounded horrible like these guys do.

I still resent her for saying the reader feels 'cheated' that my main character didn't ask the woman what was wrong in one assignment. The main character was a squirrel. Squirrels I feed never ask *me* if I'm okay. I love CC, but please make it make sense. ;_; Or maybe I'm just too stupid to 'get' it?

Wait wait, I've got an idea! How about everyone here that can draw (a stick figure is good) starts an art elitist comm! And then, like, we say "no anime," but draw anime ourselves (we'll call it manwha, and say that it's allowed), and we can have whole pictures that are just ink spots. But they're /beautiful/ inkspots. And no one else's inkspots will be so beautiful.

I think it's the only type of elitist comm that isn't running rampant on LJ, though, were I to say that I think they're all bad, I'd be hypocritical. =/

this is all showing, not telling. I can't even tell what time period this is from. it could be 1000 a.d., or 2050.

Um, do you mean 'telling not showing'? Aren't we supposed to show, not tell?

*falls off chair laughing* Sweet Jesus, an applicant just accurately corrected a mod on writing! This is the worst writing community EVER. This isn't even mentioning the fact that these great, all-knowing mods apparently can't be bothered to even capitalize. So perhaps if I follow all their criticisms and don't capitalize, I'll get in?

From the rules for members:

6. You are advised to friends-lock all of your posts after acceptance so that, if later submitted to publishers, your piece will not have been publicly published online.

Um, as far as I know, if publishers even get wind that any part of your work has been published online in any form they won't publish it. How is friends-locking it going to help? It just means that those who aren't members can't read it. Does anyone else see the flaw in this logic or is it just me?

/speaking as someone who would like to one day be published

(Exciting music)

It's 1989, and the Soviets dropped The Bomb only five years before, destroying the entire East Coast and turning the United States into a post-apocalyptic nightmare world. In the urban dystopia now known as Seattlegrad, a ragbag foursome of largely unemployed university students were prowling around where they Shouldn't Be Prowling...looking for the nearest MkDonalds, hoping to find their next fix of the highly addictive, dangerous substance known as MkNuggets.

The remnants of the United States Government had set up a secret military operation in this area, attempting to turn all of the nation's abandoned and burned out Ford Escorts and Yugos into missile substitutes. As part of the conversion process, the Government concocted a top secret chemical made from Frusen Glädjé and Duran Duran cassette tapes. Barrels of the chemical were hidden (okay, they were all out in the open, with nearby crowbars too) all around the Seattlegrad alley, and the students stumbled upon them...mistaking them for MkNugget dipping sauce!

Upon consuming the untested chemical, the students got a severe case of indigestion. Afterwards though, they sat on their flat sofa for a few hours and knocked back a few cold ones. Then, after that...their bodies began transforming, minds morphing into that of a human that is superlative to the average human being!!

Higher intelligence! Super speed! Inconceivable strength! These four ordinary kids are ordinary no more...they inexplicably dubbed themselves THE INKSLINGERS and unanimously decided to use their powers for the GOOD OF AMERICA*!! And to a lesser extent, the GOOD OF CANADA AND MEXICO!!

(Exciting shots of four superheroes, running around, escaping Soviet soldiers wearing their coats with the gigantic shoulder pads and furry hats, lots of explosions, car crashes, throwing barrels full of toxic waste, gunshots, more explosions, a hot kiss, big hair, more soldiers, car jumping over roadblock, more explosions...Title: The Inkslingers, cut to commercial.)

* Not counting the one who voted to use his powers to steal more MkNuggets.

So the only real criteria for getting in seems to be the whim of the members. (Although to be honest, I find 80% of poetery to be trite and uninteresting and that includes published work) So maybe you have to be pals with someone or something, because I can't think of any other way.

Although I'm tempted to apply myself, just to see what happens.

I loathe rating communities with a passion. That is all.

Wow, those people are really, really hung up on their cliches. It's practically every other complaint in some of the entries. And some of those things weren't really what I'd call cliched, either.

hello, meet my latest addiction. i've been obssessing over them for WEEKS. i had to join it (you don't have to apply to join, it's open membership and they won't kick you off if you just lurk) because one of them a nifty post where they copy-pasted what other rejected applicants said about them in their own journals but made it friends only. and then I couldn't let it go. MY PRECIOUSSSS.

That's just bullshit.

People who mod communities like that get off on making other people feel like shit, and that the only thing they can produce is shit.

Make's me hate people. Fuckers.
