A Very "Boring" Wank
It's small now, but threatens to explode.

ZanneChaos posts about how she doesn't understand why 'muses' get such a bad rep.

SarahtheBoring immediately jumps in with So you're saying that people who don't have outside forces in their heads, dictating stories, have no creative impulse. Nice generalization! Got any others?

Incidentally, creativity, or creative impulses ARE NOT MUSES. Not to all of us. To some of us, they are exactly that: creative impulses. Muses are outside entities - angels, fairies, gods, fictional characters or the like - who live in one's head and dictate stories to one. They are NOT flashes of inspiration or creativity. Those are - gasp! - flashes of inspiration or creativity.

Muses necessitate outside intelligences speaking into one's mind. If you think that's necessary for creativity, I'm sorry for you. I can be creative allllll by myself.

Then later:
Okay, more calmly: I hate the muse business because it romanticizes schizophrenia, which I don't think should be taken so lightly. If you have voices in your head telling you what to do, for the love of all that's good and holy, seek professional help. If you don't, don't fucking joke about it.

Not to go all Jerry Springer, but my best friend has "muses." They tell him to kill himself. Isn't that Creative and Special? Now you're telling me that if I don't have demons in my head like he does, I can't be creative? Fuck that sideways. I enjoy being sane. I enjoy being creative. You can do both.

Yes, I'm pissy about it. I think it's horrific to cutesify a serious mental disorder.

People point out that muses aren't *real* "voices in the head" and she *again* goes off:
So you're pretending to have schizophrenia? EHEHEHE LOL KAWAIII.

Sorry, I don't consider that fun.

I don't "confuse" it. I merely point out what exactly it is you're playing at. Everyone thinks it's so cute and cuddly when you are, actually, talking about outside influences beaming thoughts into your heads. I'm merely wiping off the bullshit.

As I said, it threatens to explode.

e_e Muses are muses are muses. They're not real, but they're fun to have around. Especially when you're stuck on the bus for two hours next to a little old lady who likes to talk about her 5000 grandchildren.

On the other hand, the people who act like fictional characters are real and talking to THEM and THEM ONLY? Yeah. Creepy o_o;

Good sweet LORD.

Yes. Because I complain that a certain character won't leave me alone or responds well to a particular song, that obviously means I'm making a mockery of people with genuine mental issues!

We have this thing called perspective, round about where I'm from. It comes in handy, y'know, in juggling writing with real life.

I have to say, people flipping their shit over basically nothing is one of my favourite type of wanks. Therefore, this one pleases me immensely. I mean...I don't quite get the concept of 'muses' either, and it's probably not something I'd use, but overreacting a little there, dude.

Also, saying that every single reference to 'voices in one's head' in any context, is inappropriate due to schizophrenia seems a little...off. The two really don't seem to be related in this case. I agree that sometimes, especially in the, uh, artistic community, there can be a bit of 'romanticizing' of mental illness, but I don't see that here particularly.

I don't have any mental illnessI often do/did have self-abusing and suicidal tendencies, but this started before the the 'net.,but what wrong with having a 'muse'?

Even though I don't 'write' much,I have so many characters and ideas in my head, that can make promising stories. And if any condolences, can I call my whole prog-rock albums 'muses'?

Stephen King's 'On Writing,' where he talks about his own muse shitting on his head, would probably make her go ballistic.

Sarah, a 'muse' is just the personification of a person's creative process. Mr. King TRULY DOES NOT BELIEVE that there is a spirit using him for a potty. (The rest of us are free to believe what we like 'cause some of his writing...hoo, boy...)

To be honest with you, I agree with Sarahwhatsherface when she says it's the incorrect use of the word. Much like in that whole 'drabble = 100 words' discussion a few weeks back, where people decided to also apply the word 'drabble' to short pieces of fanfiction that were not exactly 100 words.

I think calling creative impulses a muse it's a bit silly, like if the person was trying (in a rather cheesy way) to sound more "artsy". But whatever, definitely won't make a fuss out of it. *shrugs*

I feel kind of bad for the wanker here. Obviously, minus points for letting emotions turn her into a raving loonie (oops, I'm making fun of mental illness), but it must be hard to be close to someone with major psychosis.

I find the whole "muse" thing as a verbal cliché pretty annoying. There are some people who create a character they call their muse and that can be entertaining, and there are others--like Goethe--who are inspired by people they're fucking or maybe by things they'd *like* to fuck, like porn stars or pretty sunsets, and these people can be fairly said to have muses.

The endless blather about "my muses" along with "plot-bunnies" and other such fanfic jargon gets rather nauseating rather quickly.

I find things like this disturbing. Who knew that claiming to have a muse was actually a way of mocking the mentally ill?

I hate it when I end up mocking things without even realizing it! Takes all the fun away. *sulks*

Okay, maybe half the fun. *still looks a little pouty*

Doesn't dear departed JRR Tolkien talk about his characters in the same way that a lot of fanfic writers talk about theirs? In that they were, essentially, muses who talked to him, showed up out of nowhere, surprised him, dictated how the story went? I distinctly recall reading about him talking about Faramir that way. That the guy just walked out of the forest and announced himself as Boromir's baby brother.

Oh my gosh! Tolkien was mocking schizophrenia!

*goes off to find my copy of Tolkien's Letters*
