I've got a hacked copy of JKR's original draft on my hard drive! Really!
I'm sure it won't surprise anyone to hear that the Who Will Fall In Love With Whom? thread on the Mugglenet forums is an ongoing wankfest. Unfortunately, it's usually very long and boring shipper wank. Today, however, non-shipper insanity entered the Love Thread!

It starts on Page Thirty down on Post 1728, if you want to follow it along yourself. But, since it's a fast moving thread with plenty of other posts, c&ps of the individual highlights are below.

Newbie named Lelila interrupts the shipping prognostications to say: Did anyone read the original draft of OotP? Where Lily is the Heir of Slytherin and Voldemort is Harry's Grandfather? And Colin Creevey dies instead of Sirius? The characters certainly moved in a way that no one expected. I guess she wasn't happy with it and edited a whole lot. Makes you wonder what her initial intentions are vs. what the final outcome is.

Delemtri: (delicately) There was no such first draft! Are you mental?</b>

Others proclaim skepticism. Lelila is undeterred.

Lelila: I read the first draft. Got a hacked copy. All 800 Some Odd Pages of it too. Let me see if I can find it.

Delemtri: You're still joking, right? That first draft is nonsense. There was no such thing written.

Lelila: Did I do something to you in a former life or something? I was referring to her "not knowing the outcome or something" of the Ron/Hermione/Harry dating thing. You need to relax and get a drink. Oh wait you can't, you're under age. Well, I take pity on you and I'll buy one for you since I'm old enough to be your mother.

I read the first draft and when I finished it I figured it was nonsense too. After I read the published book I realized that no one could have come up with something that close, it must have been a first draft. The draft was extremely similar to the final, some of it word for word. If it was a phony, someone had JKs notes to go off of, but not the last 12 or 13 chapters, because that's where it strayed.

Still looking for it. It was a Doc file. I downloaded it. I lost a drive some months back, so it may be gone, but I'll dig around for it.

Delemtri: You did something to me in this life: you spouted nonsense on this thread. Stop.

BTW, the age thing is a very low blow. Some of the best posters in the fandom - in this thread, in fact; here I'm thinking particularly of McBeth - are very young. It is *ridiculously* bad etiquette to bring this up to support your argument. Of course, it's the only support you have, so...

Lelila: Yes they are young, and they have acted like adults. You on the other hand have not. You want to be treated like one, then act like one.

I read the draft in spring 2003 I believe. I remember it was snowing. Still looking, just gave myelf a concussion in the attic looking for drive backups.

Later: Lelila:
Ok, I found this dumb draft. Anyone want it?

Delemtri: I believe I have an obligation to look at it, yes. Keep in mind that asserting that this is a draft is more or less calling JKR a liar, as she's said in interviews that she's known from the start which characters were going to die.

Lelila: Keep in mind that who ever nicked it from wherever asserted it as the first draft, not me. I thought it was rubbish until I read the published book. The date on the original file is 5/3/03.

Polychrone: And you do realize JKR finished that book long before May 2003, don't you? More like somewhere winter 2002.

Also, creation/modification dates can be faked. All somebody has to do is set their own computer's time to something that it is not, then send the file off to a computer with the real time on it.

Lelila: Yep, that's right. I downloaded the file in May 2003, so the original date on the file I had was May 03. I just copied the backup to my drive today, so the file date is 1.5.05.

Delemtri: Lelila, this first draft reads nothing like Rowling and I can't find any resemblances between it and OOTP.

AmmoniaAlert: Could it be that loooong fanfic somebody was passing off as OotP on the peer to peer networks?

Delemtri: Did that have black phoenixes, Marauders in Privet Drive, and H/G right off the bat? If so, yes.

Lelila: I was in the middle of a response when CRASH!.

I thought it was remarkably close considering:

1. Dudley's diet
2. Hedwig's injury
3. Accurate list of Order members
4. Dumbledore fights Voldemort and calls him Tom.
5. Prominent figuring of Figg and Mungungus (at least in the beginning)

When I first read it, I thought it was **** - no Snape, Hermione, dies and comes back to life. Lily the heir to Slytherin, etc. Then I read the published book and thought, Either someone got a hold of JK's notes or JK wrote a first draft (as the person who pawned if off said) and didn't like it and trashed it.

You decide. Either way, it doesn't really matter does it? We know what her final decision was regarding the installment of the story.

Anyone else who wants it for kicks and giggles can owl me.

Polychrome: Just for fun, I did a little search through Fanfiction.net for such a fic.

After digging through the long ones and happening upon something that fits this description, I'd have to say it is, indeed, a fic.

Nothing more to see here, people.

------------------------------------------------------------------

That's where the thread is at the moment. Made me laugh.

Oh, I like this troll! She's going to insist that this "draft" she has is real, when it is in fact a fanfic (or she's made it all up), and everyone else on the board is going to go crazy trying to convince her otherwise. This is going to be fun.

it's ironic because I'm sort of backpedaling right now:

I thought, just by reading the summary, that it seemed like she backpedaled. Upon rereading, I think she does backpedal from "I read the draft" to "Well, it might be the draft, who knows?", but I guess it's not exactly LIKE CRAZY.

"Yes they are young, and they have acted like adults. You on the other hand have not. You want to be treated like one, then act like one."

as a comeback to a refusal to believe some bloodcurdling nonsense on the internet is a good one. Even if it didn't work.

That I can see Umbridge using it against Hermione just makes it funnier.

Don't forget General Leo's ressurection in FF6. Remember...enter Vector 1000 times in the World of Ruin and then circle the world in the airship 503 times clockwise and 658 times counter-clockwise, equip everyone in Imp Armor, fight exactly 393 battles, then go to South Figaro and wait in the bar for 12 hours of game time, and General Leo will walk in and from then on in, he's playable.

I've had this same fight with someone about a soopersekrit ending of FF6, too. Why do people feel the need to do this?

How is Sirius' resurrection handled, by the way? I mean, J. K. Rowling goes to such great lenghts to make it absolutely clear how OMG noncanonical this is that I'm stumped as to how someone would pull it off. (Ironically, I'm currently working on a fan fiction that involves resurrection. Thankfully, it is a canon where the rules regarding death are as consistent as the continuity is much more relaxed.)

Er, she introduces Necromancy and Shadow Arts into the canon. An necromancer OC discovers that Sirius is "not really" dead. They make a potion that involves blood of Lucius and Narcissa. It's all a bit confusing; I'm not a fan of resurrection scenarios but I'm reading along for the H/D and also one of the more brilliant OCs (who is a snake named Godric).

A never-before seen excerpt from the forthcoming book:

Hagrid gazed into the crackling fire. "Ah, Harry," he finally said, "I'm thinkin' it's time ta tell ya the truth. Dumbledore never told ya about yer father, did he?"

"He told me enough," Harry replied. "He told me Voldemort killed my father."

"Nah, that's bollocks," Hagrid snorted. "I'm yer father, Harry."

Harry scratched thoughtfully at his chin, where the beginnings of a hedge-like beard had been sprouting since late summer. It was true that, in the past year, he'd grown more than a foot in height and his literacy had taken a disturbing nosedive. And he was getting through disposable razors faster than Hermione used up batteries for her Edu-vibe*.

Perhaps, he thought, that's why I've been TALKING IN CAPITALS so often, recently. Blimey.

Still, he couldn't quite accept what Hagrid was telling him. It was just too big (or it would be, by the time he was fully-grown; he was destined to leave behind him a series of girlfriends with pained expressions and astronomical gynecologist bills). He rummaged in a pocket and pulled out a stub of chalk, a piece of string and a live mouse.

This was just getting weird.

*The Edu-vibe - a piece of educational erotica, designed especially for shag-deprived hyper-intelligent witches. It has four settings: Random Fact, Postulate, Vigorous Debate and Thesis. Hermione's Edu-vibe had stuck on Vigorous Debate some three weeks previously and, the last time Harry had seen her, she was wandering the halls humming to herself, with an odd little smile on her slightly-flushed face.

There's nothing better than fake draft/script drama. Entire fandoms rise up to wank togther.

It brings joy to my heart, and reminds me of a happier time... back when fake Matrix Revolutions shooting scripts were traveling along the interweb and bringing wank wherever they went. The sad thing was that the fake scripts were better than the movie turned out to be.
