Crispin Freeman is not an ass--he KICKS it!
I was going through the IMDB site because I wanted some info on a VA known as Crispin Freeman. He's the one who voiced the infamous Albel Nox from Star Ocean 3 and the nutjob Albedo in Xenosaga. According to his bio, he's a "lovely, humble person".

Seems that someone doesn't agree!

Basically, according to "Holidame", Crispin is an ass and she wanted to SPIT on him! GAH! She felt that way because Crispin allegedly talked shit about one of her favorite voice actors and he never showed up to a banquet when her friend paid SO MUCH $$$$$$$$ to sit by him. Oh, and he didn't show up for a panel either.

Obviously, people don't agree and try to explain to her the possible reasons why he didn't show up. She doesn't seem to consider that.

This wank actually started in 2003 and went on until 2004. What makes this great is that Crispin Freeman himself shows up and well, sets the record straight.

Good reading!

Ah, IMDB, does your wankst never end?

Though I do like the person who asked, "Be honest, because I'm curious; is he hot? oO" Because everyone knows that's what's most important! :p

I remember when Crispin posted on an Utena ml to respond to someone who didn't like his work as Touga in the dub. Good times, good times.

I saw Crispin Freeman at a panel at this past year's Anime Boston, and the main impression I had of him was that he was way too smart to be a voice actor. I didn't get the impression he was a jerk, though. That was Lex Lang.

Crispin is one of my favorite VAs but I also think Crispin is one of the nerdiest. (Of course I don't see nerdy as a bad thing.) He has that Mythology in Anime panel, he'll talk about anything anime on his mailing list in great detail when he has time, he's the only Slayers VA who went to ADV to reprise his role as Zelgadis in Slayers Premium, and once he asked his fans on his mailing list if they were up for Diablo. The commentary on the Slayers Premium DVD is a great watch because Crispin obviously wants to talk about Slayers but he's paired up with Lina's ADV VA, who not only didn't see the TV series but didn't even see the movie she's commenting on all the way though. "So Lina, what do you think of Gourry? Hee hee!" "Who's Gourry? The blond guy, right?"

*facepalms* Lex Lang needs to learn how to not be over dramatic when voice acting. He killed the english Phantom Brave dialogue for me, and that's really the only role I know he's in. Then again, I can't say no to Steven Blum's sexy voice as another character in the game.

But, yes, I believe it IS Crispin's fault, if not because she spent the money but because he felt he was so 'big' and 'important' that he had the right to snub them.

Yes because we all know that when you become an 'all powerful' VOICE ACTOR you never ever have to deal with scheduling conflicts, personal crisis, or delayed flights.

If you're not at a con it's because you hate your fans, there can be no other explanation.

Oh, wow... never thought I'd see this here. Holidame is a friend of mine, and she posted about this on her journal months ago. I... guess it isn't private, since anyone can view the entry, but I'd feel weird linking her journal name to all and sundry, so if anyone's interested in the epic conclusion, I'll just paste it in.

Ok, here goes... like a year ago? I posted something on IMDB.com about how much I hated Crispin Freeman. Yeah, I know it's a little shallow, but I wanted to see if there was anyone out there that agreed with me. When it came to his fans on IMDB, I got a resounding "NO! WE LOVE HIM AND SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE!!!" ... and I was ok with that. *shrugs* I didn't get the response I wanted, but that's fine. I defended my point.

So, whatever, I stopped caring about it about 6 months ago. Until recently, when there was a new slew of posts on the IMDB board and some guy kept IMing me and asking if I would "punch Crispin Freeman in the face" if I got the chance. I laughed and said that no, I'm by no means violent and that I simply did not like his behaviour as I thought it was unprofessional, that I did not think he had the right qualities for the characters he was offered and that if I could sit down and talk to the guy, I was sure I'd find otherwise.

And then, I found out why there was renewed interest in my hatred. You see, some Crispin Freeman fan had posted about it on the fanboard on Yahoo that Mr. Freeman moderates. They'd been discussing it recently (and while I can imagine the words "cunt" and "whore" were tossed about willy-nilly) and he had come over to IMDB to set me straight about what a low self-esteemed bitch I was.

Granted, I deserved the reaming I got from him. I had been rather hateful in the post and truthfully had only expected his fans to respond, as I had only heard of his mis-adventures with keeping in touch with his fans. He wrote me this:

( This was his reply on the IMDB board )

So, I wrote an email reply to him. No, I wasn't really embarrassed (as they imply on his board), nor have I "come to my senses" and fallen head over heels in love with him, but I was impressed by the fact that he actually replied to me at all. So I appologized and said that I had changed my mind on him. And I had; he had given reasons for his behaviour that sounded good enough and had shown reform. Good. I'm glad. I suspected that that was that.

And then, he replied again. Within 12 hours.

( His email reply )

I have yet to re: him, as I'm still flabbergasted and not quite sure what to say. I'm a little insulted by the fact that I'm considered an illiterate, hateful bitch, but I guess that's considered ok when I attack someone they like (or one's own pride)... I'd feel the same way. But in the end? I have respect for this man. Holy shit. I can actually watch anime in ENGLISH now, folks. ._.;;;;;;;;;;

All's well that ends well, apparently.

I just lost my entire reply... ;_;

Classic Slayers Wank! One of the best topics for wank in Ye Olde Slayers Fandome is David Moo's portrayal of Xellos. And while you can easily fucking *trip* over someone who wants to bitch about him, every great once in awhile you'll find someone who didn't like Crispin's job as Zelgadis - and they're usually pretty well ignored by the rest of the fandom for being whack-ass.

But this comment:

He tore down David Moo without even considering that the man was a talented actor and I think he portrayed Xelloss as a grade A smartass quite well. His portrayal of Zelgaddis, though, if you ask me, is very much lacking.

Dude, was she wearing asbestos panties? 'Cause she just managed to link two statements that almost everyone in Slayers fandom will disagree violently with - David Moo = Good! and Crispin Freeman = Bad!

And yes, Crispin, I missed David Moo in Slayers Premium, too. ;_; WHY DIDN'T YOU DRAG HIM OVER TO ADV'S STUDIO, YOU BITCH?! YOU'RE SO INCONSIDERATE TO YOUR FANS (those being me) HOW COULD YOU?!?!/1/1? <3 <3 <3 <3

I seem to recall that there was a time when he made himself known on a thread about his voice acting in Hellsing, too, and said pretty much the same thing (i.e., "I hold myself to high standards, etc, etc"). Dear God, the man is omnipresent!

I was never much a fan of his Alucard; he came out too flat for my tastes--but then, that's why they make that handy-dandy button on DVD menus to switch to subs instead of dubs. I could talk about how the American model for dubbing does tend to encourage a less, uh, enthusiastic delivery of lines, but I won't wank that way today.

What does impress me is that, more than a lot of voice actors, he seems to actually care about this job, rather than seeing it as some crappy thing he does while waiting for real work to come along. (When I talk to voice actors and I know the series better than they do, that worries me. Especially since I don't always have a top-notch memory for details. I remember playing Taboo Sensei with Jamie McGonnigal on my team at one con and shuddering at what he didn't know about series he had acted in). He takes the time to learn about his characters, and he spends time finding out what fans think of his work, which is impressive.

Man, do I love Crispy. I've seen him two years in a row on a VA panel at Anime Expo, and he's great. In 2003, he did a Utena speech (something about revolutions, I've ever seen most of the series), and ended it with "...in my pants" at a girl's request, and in 2004 he sang opera in... Romanian? Something like that. He seemed funny and nice. But then again, I've never met him outside of a panel, so my opinion is probably invalid.

That, and his name is fun. Crispin. Crispy.

A friend of mine had Guest of Honor relations duties at Fanime a few years back, and he pretty much got to hang out with Crispin during the con. His opinion? Nice guy. Girlfriend at the time was a bitch, but Crispin himself was cool.

And he's right about the con schedules not being too feasible at times. They wound up being late to the masquerade because they were struck by the desire to eat and have energy and stuff. ("Uh, yeah, we're stuck in traffic... Dude, could I get a refill on my coke? Thanks.")

Just adding my vote to the consensus that Holidame and their friend are the ball-lickers asses in this one.

Y'know, it's kind of odd...I was at Akon 2001, and knew Freeman was there, and being the huge fan I am, I wanted to see him...but my friends said they saw him at the Anime Match Game and...huh, it's been a while, lemme see...they said he acted like he didn't care about anything that was going on, like an ass, and seemed to be drunk. So...apparently, this girl wasn't the only one that got that impression. Maybe he was having a bad day? O_o;

On a sidenote, I used to think Freeman had a pretty generic voice, and then I watched 13+ episodes of WHR without realizing the character I was drooling over was Freeman. *facepalm*
