Over on scans_daily, someone posts a bunch of scans in which Tim Drake (the third Robin) is very very pretty. (Warning: Includes several crotch shots.) People comment on the pretty, people try to figure out the Robin(s) time line, people comment on the pretty some more, and a good time is generally had by all.

That is, until scarfe gets her/his knickers in one hell of a twist because ... actually, I'm still trying to figure out why exactly. Presumably, because people are lusting over "a fictional character with comparatively little set visual look and personality [...] and is nothing but an idea and some pencils and ink?"

General wankery ensues.

Fictional characters are sometimes (read, at all times if it is a visual medium as well) portrayed as sexy. You know what? It's nothing new. Go read any epic cycle and then we'll talk. Heroes have always had to be beautiful. How many ugly superheroes are there?

Sexiness serves a purpose even when it isn't directed at the intended audience. Nightwing's sexiness isn't amped up to sexually tickle the fanboys, it's there to make Nightwing even cooler. But TPTB also know that Nightwing can sell books on looks alone. So there you go, that sexiness that made NW cool also makes NW hot, and the readers who could respond to that will.

What this *idiot* doesn't understand is that it doesn't cater to heterosexual males only. God forbid women/men-who-are-attracted-to-other-men get a share of the action too. Oh, we *squee*? I'm not sure what he does when Ed Benes draws Birds of Prey, but I'm pretty sure it sounds something like it in his head.

In conclusion, leave my fictional boys and girls alone. They're hot. They're drawn hot and written hot and I'm damn well entitled to find them hot if I so desire. Now fuck off.

Because (and I can't believe this hasn't been pointed out) the depictions of Argent and Spoiler aren't at all sexualized. The posture, the ass crack, the bondage gear with arms spread out... I can understand most elements of fandom. I can also understand if these reactions to Robin were reactions to an actor or something, such as the oh-so-common obsession with Johnny Depp. At least there is a body and mind in reality behind his characters that appeals to people. But really, I don’t understand the obsessive, and seemingly quite serious sexual connection with a fictional character.

You know, when I perv obessess fantasize think about a character, I most definitely am not thinking about the real mind and body supplied by the actor behind the character. For me to be attracted to someone in real life depends on that person's personality and behavior and personal hygiene and the actor's real characteristics are subsumed into the character - the actor may have some of that in his or her personal makeup, but it's not a given. And I fully expect that most of the actors who play characters I like would be complete turn-offs for me in reality. That's like mixing up the author and the books he or she writes - because a book has an abusive marriage in it doesn't mean the author went through one.

Because I am, y'know, capable of separating fantasy from reality.

scarfe, knowing of this danger, is understandably concerned. If women really are capable of lust, he reasons, they must too have a thermonuclear device implanted somehwere in the pelvic region. Lusting after these drawings will cause these devices to display: "Target acquired: Underaged pretty boy with Daddy issues." but Robin doesn't exist, so how can they then have sex with him in order to disarm the devices and save the world from nuclear winter? Scarfe's just trying to save us all!

Sadly, this kind of hits close to home for me because back in my not so blissful ignorant teenage days I used to pester my boyfriend about fantasizing about fictional women. Then I learned and grew and blossomed into one of those bad girls who gawks at fictional characters, myself.

So I guess I understand where this guy is coming from even though his initial comment could have been worded a lot better than it was. We're all ignorant about some things, being willing to learn about and understand new perspectives is a wonderful thing.
