Current mood:Slightly amused.

Oh, fine.
At the behest of an anonymouse, and because I read through and there is some content with potential for amusement, I give you Fanart Bitchfest 2005. In which icon makers are decried as merely plagiarists, wallpapers and brush sizing are bitched about, and the whole sticky mess is compared to rap sampling, which is also, apparently, another illegitimate art form.

Oh, and Mrs Knickenbocker is a felon.

Waaaitasecond. Are they talking about fanart, as in drawn images of a popular character, or are they talking about throwing some stock photos through Photoshop filters?

This wank is more what happens when the people who are good enough to make professional, commercial graphics start wanking everywhere. The "filters over stock photos" group have worse grammar, I'd imagine.

No. My first reaction when I saw this shit was "Bitch please". And still is, really, even after looking at all the pretty pictures posted above. Nice filters and shit, but you won't catch me dead calling it "fanart".

Though some of the people linked in the original anon comments actually can draw and have other skills & talents apart from their manip abilities. Which is nice. Perfect example from this one. I'm far more inclined to call work such as this "fanart", rather than this rubbish posted above. Even from a manip/fan-wallpaper perspective, it's shoddy.

Speaking of icons- I just spent two hours watching Doctor Who working on a bitchin' Secret of Mana icon (I've been playing this game again) and I cannot, for the life of me, get it under 40k without it A.) Looking really bad or B.) Being so tiny you can't even see what's going on. So I gave up and did the wacky eyes again. Now with 45% more...er...eye...action, thanks to a crapload of screenshots I took at that particular boss. Plus, different color!

Er. How bad of a plagiarist does it make me if I rip off my own icon?

Um...*cough* Okay, fanart. I was sort of hoping this would be like...a showcase of really bad fanart, but alas. It's back to the GAFF boards for me, to feed that craving.

They are quite wrong - there are actually /two/ different styles of icons. The trendy, and the non trendy. And only the trendy all look precisely the same. (Heheh, I know which one I make. >>;;)

These people who are saying fanart... why do I have a feeling they don't mean the handdrawn sort? *Very, very confused about this* Because that, while not /legally/ copyrightable to someone, is very much their own, and there isn't an online art community with many members where a person is allowed to repost it as their own, regardless of being a "derivative work."

I didn't know anybody referred to that as fanart. Drawing something and photoshop design involving existing images both take plenty of work and skill to do well, but they're not the same thing. Calling it digital fanart doesn't really clear things up either, since a whole lot of people draw/paint digitally.
I'm just kind of sick of people thinking that if I draw on the computer, I'm not actually drawing anything.

Man, as someone who knows all the people mentioned I honestly think it's mostly jealously on the anonymouse part.

Bored Now was elite...cause well the people involved where sick of the shit they had to put up at FF. I'm sorry I didn't want to see 5 million manps of models but with the Harry Potter kids heads. That is fucking disturbing.

I'm really boggled now.

Half people argue fanart isn't art if it hasn't done by hand. Because you let the computer do it for you, because you use images you have no ownership over, and filters.

The other half argues that fanart shouldn't be called fanart because by their definition, they've only seen fanart as being scetches. So fandom art using stock images and screencaps isn't fanart because it doesn't fit into the definition.

Well....

IMO, fanart is art made with the motifs of a fandom, any fandom. It doesn't matter how it's done. If it's a collage, a manipulation, a blend, an icon, a painting an illustration or whatever.

Just because it uses copyrighted images created by someone else doesn't mean that it isn't art. History thaugt us different.

Creating artwork at the computer takes technical skill, but also creativity. you need to have an eye for composition and mood. Cos that's what makes art special. The emotional quality of it.

and as to who is a good fanartist and who isn't. It's all a matter of taste.
