Jak Fanart wank!
It's little, because the community is so small, but there is sudden wank to be had over at the_precursors, a fan community for the Jak series from Naughty Dog.

[info]filthy_animal is OMG OFFENDED!! that some mom or dad is selling their 9 year old's fanart on eBay.

[info]mafia_boy tells him to chill, as does mod (edited to correct) [info]queensimia, but he's not listening.

Eat me. You think I give half a shit about this little kid and their art? The parent is an idiot enough for trying to sell it, and obviously a moron. Jak and Dark Jak are copyrighted by Naughty Dog, and this parent is trying to make a profit by drawing from Bob Rafei's artwork and claiming as their own. Not once did they give Bob Rafei OR Naughty Dog credit for the peice, so it's simply ALL KINDS of illegal.

I don't expect it to go much farther than that, but it's new, we'll see.

Someone needs to search "fan cels" on eBay. It's a 9 year old, I don't think the original artist would sue. As an artist, I'd find if very satisfying.

That's pretty damn good for a 9 year old.

Seriously. Although I do like how she classified it as "realism."

Warg. I'm glad I'd decided the other day to stay away from the comm until I'd finished Jak3...major spoiler got posted without warnings and I accidently read it.

On the art, though... Yeah, not bad for a nine year old. I agree. But then it also looks like it was free hand copied off some official Jak art. I'm all for copying in order to learn...it's just in rather poor taste to SELL it afterwards. (And that's aside from it being fan art.) I seriously doubt anyone at Naughty Dog is going to get their panties in a bunch and sue over this, though. People auction fan art at conventions all the time, as is.

Durh on me. Yeah, it was free hand copied. Looked at the ebay auction before the comm had finished loading the original post. *smacks self*

Penalty for [info]filthy_animal for his failure to harp about the point that the other side used a your where a you're was in order. When you enter a flamewar, you are expected to follow certain traditions.

filthy_animal may be a wanker but I think he does have a point.

The legalities of fan-art can be pretty tricky and I do wonder what the parents were thinking.

I'm all for encouraging a kids creativity but when did hanging drawings on the fridge go out of style?

I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish by selling it on eBay.

They want money to buy a fridge?

I agree that the art's not bad for a nine-year-old, but you'd still have to pay me to pay for that. If those are really the parents trying to sell it, they need a shot of realism.

I think that shot came in the form of zero bids.

Aw, I think it's kinda cute. I know if ebay had been around when I was a kid, I so would have attempted to get my parents to do something similar, and I really can't draw even now. I bet the kid will be told it got several bids and be given ten bucks or something by his parents. I just don't get a skeevy feel from it, at all. The seller has over 300 sells, so the son is probably familiar with his parents doing auctions. It just seems like a bit of fun.

The part I loved the best about all of it was one of the lines in the description on ebay...

This is an investment for the future.

NO PRESSURE!

PS: Teh wank got bahleeted.

I agree. Just think of this poor kid having the knowledge that he's GOT to be a famous artist so his ripped off work will have some value in the future.

I'm glad my parents stuck with the 'hanging on the fridge method' and, "We don't care if you never sell a piece of art, we think your stuff is wonderful" methods of encouragement.

*grins and tries not to chuckle* While Queen Simia is definately a member of the community, I'm actually the mod - I was the one compared to Baron Praxis in the other Jak wank that was reported here.

Unfortunately, filthy_animal's post has been deleted - probably by him/her? as I know I didn't take it down. I wouldn't do that to wank in my own community.

I agreed that it wasn't a good idea to be selling on ebay, and pointed out that it might not be all sorts of illegal as it seems everyone has a different policy on fanart and selling it. The sale of japanese doujinshi to Anne Rice fanwork banning sorts, I mean.

Besides, an artist has got to start somewhere.

THEIR art? It's a boy, isn't it? Wouldn't that make it HIS art?
