Current mood:

A Modest Proposal.
Okay, so I was mentioning the Yaoi-Con themed wank to some friends sometime earlier, and I recalled a little quip I made there about wankish behavior offline, which then reminded me of having seen someone back at The Mary Sue Report share a story about a month or two back about this particularly kooky MS writer (who I think used to be her roomie for a while) and her antics, which included having worn a shirt saying "I am [name of MS here]" in public to see if anyone recognized her (hilarious post, too).

Anyway, I was thinking about all this, and then realized something:

There's already a fairly substantial number of members here, hailing from fandoms covering just about the whole spectrum. I suspect that there's at least a couple of you that have the chance to participate in fandom offline as well, whether by going to cons, joining the local clubs, participating in print 'zines, or even just chatting it up with a fellow fan you run into by chance at a store/rental place/whatever. And, considering that all these activities attract the presence of fans of all types, I suspect that you've wound up bearing witness to some rather hilarious antics (either things people did or said) in these places at least once.

...this is a great source of incredible wank that isn't being tapped into.

So, what I'm about to suggest for consideration is the following: A "little sister" community to F_W, expressly for the purpose of sharing these stories with others.

It would definitely never be updated as often as F_W, seeing as people in general tend to try to act less wankish in public than they do online (probably because of the "anonymity" the internet provides), plus -should people like this idea and want to go along with it- we should try to just stick to particularly "special" wankery (such as the T-shirt girl I mentioned) to keep it an entertaining read. (Leaving the people being wanked anonymous might also be a good idea, since it's real life we're talking about here, and some people might feel the use of names being far too intruding. This is entirely up for debate by y'all as well, though.)

We could call it something like "Fandom_Wank: On the Road."

So, your opinions?

I'm in! Even if, as you say, it doesn't move much, it'd be fun when it did. SO let me get this clear: it's just for wanky things people do or say in real life, physically?

That's pretty much the idea, yes. Of course, they need to be fandom related, since it'd be like an offshoot of F_W.

Anyway, the MS author I cited would be an example of what I mean for things people do. An example of things people say would be that story I remember seeing around here about how supposedly, one of our "popular" BNF subjects was condescending enough to go and correct the grammar of someone who was a complete and utter stranger to her (er, forgot which one it was).

And of course, I would like to add that they need to be eyewitness accounts of the people submitting. No operating on "hearsay."

Oooo. I'm going to Otakon this year. (Very large anime/manga con in Balt., Maryland.) I would love to find some wankiness there. It would be so much fun. :3

Oh yeah, I've heard of Otakon. One of the biggest names in anime cons, if I'm not mistaken.

Heh, I have to admit, part of the reason I thought of this was because there aren't any real big fandom-type events around here (I've heard there's a sci-fi/fantasy/anime con on the island once [or maybe twice?] a year, but I don't know much details about it and I suspect it's really too small to get some truly hilarious shit going on.), and from all the stories people tell me of both the good and the bad, I'd really love to go see one someday. So, until then, you could say this is my little way of vicariously living the experience. >D

Yes, it is one of the big name cons. It's friggin huge. Of course, that includes more opportuinites for the wank to ensue. I'll also be there all three days this year. >D Kekeke... I'll make sure I keep track of all the wank I find!

So would offline_wank be a good name? (I hate the term "meatspace").

I think MsAllegro shouting "Hello president Astin" would be a good example.

Hmm... yeah, that or F_W Offline sound like possible name choices. *takes note of them*

*LOL* Should I ask?

offline_wank is too easy to misinterpet, in my opinion. (As in, even more so than the other options. o.o;) May I vote for fw_offline?

I'm still polling for opinions and suggestions on the whole thing, so your thoughts on the name are duly noted. :)

If you got any other suggestions, please do share. ^^

I'd join! I have some stories but they're more along the lines of crazy-fans as opposed to wanky-fans.

And I think 'meatspace' means anywhere but cyberspace. I'm guessing, though.

Well, what exactly do you mean by crazy-fans? You got a brief example you can give me to illustrate?

I think the person who posted about the MS author I was referring to in the OP also mentioned that the MS-writer was also a bit of a basket case in other ways unrelated to fandom, so she might be an example of a crazy-fan (assuming we're thinking the same thing when we use this term). I forget the details, though, and right now I'm too lazy tired to go digging for the post, so I can't be sure. ^^;

For example---I saw Robert Plant being mobbed by fangirls as he was walking down the street in San Francisco. I don't mean crazy as in 'someone on meds' but 'someone who can't behave around a star.'

Hmm... well, that doesn't sound as particularly outlandish despite the immaturity of the behavior, so I'm not sure if that's quite what I had in mind.

However, over here we're often debating on what's "true" wanky behavior and what isn't, so I think you could just go ahead and post your accounts (well, assuming more people are wanting in on this), and let people decide "yea" or "nay" for themselves.

ARGH.

This setup is even more evil than LJ when it comes to making communities.

Question for anybody who can answer: How the HELL does one make the account into a community account over here? The FAQ is blank regarding that. So lost... *cry* ;_;

Nevermind, I figured it out by using LJ's link and just changing the URL to JF's domain.

I know they're busy as hell and I appreciate their efforts, but I do hope the people running JournalFen have the time to work some more on this stuff soon enough.

>>We could call it something like "Fandom_Wank: On the Road."<<

I hate to rain on your parade but this really doesn't seem like a good idea.

First there's the 'you had to be there' factor. Meaning that something that seems like a real sidespltter when it happens may fall flat when told at a later also.

Also it seems a little unfair. I mean aren't we all allowed to be completely wanky at some point?

I think even the most causal Smallville or Buffy fan would flip out if Sarah Michelle Gellar or Micheal Rosenbaum talked to them.

I'll add that people who do act that way in public probably aren't playing with a full deck. It does NOT seem like a good idea to antagonize someone who might be mentally unstable.

I'm sure most of them are okay but you never know if the gal wearing the Mary Sue name tee-shirt might have buried her parents in the backyard.

To me it just seems like twice as much work for something that'll only be half as entertaining as the original F_W.

I mean why go to the trouble of purusing cons for wank we there's tons on untapped wank available on-line.

Notice the part where I answered that issue and said that I didn't think "getting all squealy at seeing your favorite celeb" was what I was thinking of. I'd certainly get at least butterflies if I ever got to chat with one of my faves.

Also, like here on F_W, everyone is allowed to have a say in the matter, so you're perfectly free to reply to someone's post with "that ain't wanky."

That's one reason why I said in the comm info to avoid naming actual full names, and suggested pseudonyms as a better option.

Also, your comment's kinda operating under the assumption that everyone who was "targeted" would know about the place, or that they even have a computer/internet connection. It also kind of implies (whether that was your intention or not, it does kinda imply it) that someone who was that mentally unstable wouldn't be antagonized by the online wanks, which I seriously doubt (I would think if the person was really that unstable, he/she would make no difference between wether the wanking was online or offline.).

Anyway, I'm willing to have a little faith and trust that the members of this community that join are intelligent enough to know what to post and what not to post. And again, everyone else has a say in whether they agree or not with each person's submissions.

To me it just seems like twice as much work for something that'll only be half as entertaining as the original F_W.

I don't expect it to ever be as popular as F_W. Still, I think there is a little something that's particularly special about cases of offline wankery, and that it should have its own special little corner.

I mean why go to the trouble of purusing cons for wank we there's tons on untapped wank available on-line.

Umm, where did I ever say for people to go pursue the wank? I don't know about you, but I never search for wankery, not even online. The wank finds me, not the other way around. This is all just for people to tell their stories of something that they noticed happen while they were enjoying their con/club meeting/whatever, not a wank-hunt.

Anyway, I already made the community before I got your post, so I guess the point is moot. We'll just have to wait and see how it develops.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree in this one. However, I want you to know that your opinion is duly noted and very much appreciated by me. Thanks.
