Lotrips BNF abundantlyqueer thinks it's wrong to mock people's fanfic.

Dissenting comments have been deleted, ass kissing abounds, people have been banned, and hey, we have something real close to Godwin's Law.

Good times, good times.

I've been waiting to see how long it would take for this to make it here. Really. I have. That's how I sad I am this fine morning/evening/what have you.

Isn't it ironic, doncha think?

Being a GAFFer this kind of bugs me, but it's funny too, I mean, why does it burn one up that somebody somewhere else might be saying ill of their work where they can't hear it? If I believed that whole "Say it to my face, not behind my back" thing applied to art criticism, I'd be doing nothing but calling up movie directors and giving them shit. No, I don't feel bad about mocking fics. The reasons have been discussed numerous times, so I won't go back over it, but...er, lost my train of thought. Anyway, yeah. Mmmpf indeed.

Thing is, mocking is funny. And I've been mocked, and I take it in good humour. Hell, I've been wanked, but I had it coming. (I was in the right, but... anyway.)

If you write, not everyone will like it. That's the case across the board. And how in hell can people expect blanket adoration? That's just daft.

I swear some people are so clouded by their emotions they are purposely obtuse when it comes to the matter of criticism. So basically what she's saying is to shut up unless you can boost her ego. And then she gets melodramatic to stir indignation in her bandwagon. Meh, I am so annoyed by the way writers are supposedly allowed to be completely irrational when somebody laughs at the fruit of their - what was it? "Spirit, tenacity, and generosity". And you're generous how, calling people you barely know "pretty barren places"? Yeah, I'm pretty bitter at the hypocrisy of getting on the high-horse and pretending you're cleansing the fandom from evil when all you really want is for your flist to reassure you that the big meanies are wrong thus your writing doesn't suck thus your existence is still validated.

Oh, oh, and this:

it's about the apparently acceptable, condonable, ignorable practice of mocking other people's fic behind their backs.

How is it unacceptable? How is that wrong? Jesus, if it's behind your back, probably it's to spare you the trauma of being flamed. It's actually for your sake. I wonder what would she think of fanfic_hate? That's pretty straightforward. I love how people get upset because of stuff like fanfic_hate and claim it's because it's anonymous and when the criticism is unanonymous, they write it off as rude and pitiless.

And this!

i don't understand why - for fucking AMUSEMENT - someone would do this to another human being.

Yeah. That one time when I made my cousin play with matches after spraying her with gasoline they asked me the same. Jesus, what a drama queen. What is she going to say if I set her cousin on fire? That said, the denial involved in stating in big bold letters that critics are the devil is amazing. I wonder what she thinks of people who get paid to snark at books much more anally and mercilessly than her fic probably was. Or does she rationalise it as them being professional and thus "different" somehow?

Dear Fanfic Writers With Ego Issues,

The only courtesy you deserve is fair criticism, not the immunity you think the fandom owes you because You Care.

No love,
Me (and my own Issues that got me so carried away, clearly)

Am I crushing the soul of some fangoil who spewed out a pile of steaming shit because she can't be bothered to care about plot, characterization, and spelling just as long as she gets those "OMG RITE MORE!!!!" reviews everytime I comment on GAFF? On Deleterius?

Do I carve a trench in the heart of someone who shrinks from the mildest of criticism because she thinks every word she types is gold?

Good.

The Book Of Fanfic - Chapter One
[info]msmanna
2005-01-18 12:38 pm UTC (link)
1: And it came to pass that some people wrote fanfic, and they had themselves a high old time of it, and why not, for it was fun.

2: And it came to pass very shortly afterwards that others read these writings, and thought that they were not Good, and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

3: "Lo!" they said. "This badfic is a plague upon the nations of the Earth. For how hard is it to get a beta reader? Or to run spellcheck? Or use the holy powers of logic? Or write the characteristions *I* like? Verily, these writers are crap."

4: The noise of outraged fans did rise up even to Heaven and buzzed in the ear of God, like unto a buzzing plague of locusts.

5: And it did bother Him, for He was trying to have a relaxing afternoon by the pool, reading popslash about Lance Bass and Justin Timberlake having Teh Hawt Buttsex.

6: (For yea, truly is it said of them that they are the Lambs of God.)

7: And, lo, in His mercy and wisdom and desire to read in peace, the Lord blessed those who did not wish to read the fanfic with the power of the back button, even in their browsers, and the miracle of the delete key, even in their mailing lists, that they might not have to read that which they did not wish to read.

8: And there was much rejoicing.

Oh, Christ. Jesus, lady, get a fucking grip. If you're going to take the time to create something and put it out there, you're going to make yourself hugely vulnerable to the world and its whims. You can scream at it all you want, but in the end you're the one who opened yourself up for that karate chop to the chest. One of those things about being an artist? Is that there's always critics. And you can either fucking DEAL WITH IT, or stop showing your work out of fear. But that's a damn shame, that is, when fear chases you off.

But in the end, the only person whose actions you can control is yourself, and those are your options. Regardless of what you think of mocking, and your high and lofty opinions, it's gonna happen.

Besides, I'm sure this chick has mocked a bad movie or book before, so she should shut her trap. If she defending someone else, then they need to do their own talking instead of letting their fandom nanny defend them.

Give me a break and cry me a river.

It's been said a million times: once you post it, it's fair game. From that moment on, it's out of your hands and there is not a damned thing you can do about it. And if you can't handle good criticism, or bad criticism, or snarkiness, or mocking without weeping, whining, and packing up your goodies and going home and never writing again...then that's probably a good thing. If there is one thing I've learned from 20 years of doing this, it's that writing (amateur or pro) is not for the faint of heart or thin-skinned.

Yes, I know what it's like to have a fic mocked and utterly ripped to shreds. It was one of the most humiliating things that had ever happened to me. But you know what? I sulked for a day or two, then went back and reread the criticism carefully. Lo and behold, the mockers were right--it was a truly suck-ass story and deserved the beating it received. And I swore that I would never let myself fall into those same bad habits ever again (instead, I'd learn all new ones!). It made me a better writer, and honestly, a better person.

Could people be kinder and more gentle in their criticism? Of course. Does that mean they will be? Hell no. The sooner you develop a thick skin and decide to learn from your mistakes, the happier you will be, both in the fanfic arena and real life.

Thus endeth the sermon.

What she's asking for is for the Kindy Clause to be applied to fanfic writers. You know the one; where everyone smiles and claps at little Jared's off key and unco-ordinated rendition of The Macarena because he's only 6 and trying so hard. Or where every kiddy's picture gets hung on the wall, even if little Samantha knocked over the paint bucket and George stuck his hands in it, because every little 'un must be encouraged to find that blossoming flower of creativity within themselves.

Except fanfic authors aren't children and shouldn't be treated as such.

Most fen point and mock fanfic behind an author's back because fandom is filled to its ever-lovin' brim with fanfic authors who go raving apeshit at the slightest hint of criticism directed at their precious "masterpieces", constructive or otherwise.

Poke a fanfic author and you risk unleashing a gibbering, bile-filled maniac. There are exceptions to this, naturally, but they're rare, and just too many of us Oldbie fens have witnessed those who we thought were sane, intelligent friends devolve into shit-flinging cunts when their darling fanfic babies were dissed. I'm just sayin', some of us have played that song before.

I swear, I'm so angry I'm practically incoherent, but here goes.

And that, my dear, is why people choose not to risk your spittle and incoherency and instead talk behind your back. When you've proved that you can act like a mature adult, maybe people will do you the courtesy of being honest with you. As long as you impose a penalty on honesty, you have no right to whine when people won't interact with you on a level playing field.

even if that human spirit doesn't know how to construct a friggin' sentence to your satisfaction. don't you dare step on that.

Not being able to construct a sentence and lacking the good sense not to display that to the entire internet... well.. let's just say I need to get my entertainment from somewhere. If this makes me a killer of orphaned kittens and eater of babies in her eyes, so be it.

this is almost entirely a community of women, and y'know what? we have enough of the friggin' world shitting on us and stepping on us an

Hahahahahaha!

Oh my god. Please stop speaking for us, you're making us look like morons. The day I say I don't want criticism because I'm a woman is the day I'm hanging up my vagina. What kind of delusional, self-entitled diva doesn't want her mind or her art examined because she's female?

and i'm sitting here literally crying, because i don't understand why - for fucking AMUSEMENT - someone would do this to another human being.

If you can find nothing more to cry about in this world except people being snide to shitty fanfic authors, I congratulate you. You're an idiot.

And... BNF? I read Lotrips and I never heard of abundantlyqueer. Maybe this whole crit thing hit a nerve with her. Not feeling appreciated this week, are we?

As my friend Vehemently says, "You're only as oppressed as you want to be."

You want to write? Then write - it's that simple. And if you show it to people, expect criticism, constructive and that other mean kind.

So....we shouldn't make fun of people who can't write coherent sentences because women are oppressed? Or something like that? And people are starving in Asia, so don't make fun of anyone's grammar ever, even if it is atrocious.

Also, melodrama much? They're mocking a fanfic, not killing the author's entire extended family and performing atrocities on their pets. Frankly, I think if a person quits writing because some random guy on the Internet was OMGmean and snarky about their fic, then that person needs to grow a thicker skin and get over it. The Internet is not kindergarten, where everyone gets a special prize for trying. And if a whole bunch of people are mocking your fic, then it's either a grudge at work (in which case, recognize it and ignore it) or you probably suck. So either give up and be a whiny baby or try to, y'know, not suck. Because while no piece of writing is universally loved, there's a lot less snarking on stuff that's actually decent.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way...

Do these people live in the real world? I don't think they do.

People mock. People say mean things. People rip apart things they don't like.

Welcome to reality. All the self-righteous indignation you can muster isn't going to change that.

You know, I've been reading FW daily for more than a year, because sometimes it's really funny, and let's face it, it is easier to accept one's own imperfections when faced with an ever-constant flow of examples in general human fallibility.

But I've also been an obsessive reader of AQ's fiction. I'm not into LotRiPS (LotRiPS AU's, even!) or any sort of RPS, but she is a gem. If you have not heard of her, it may be because she doesn't participate in the general fangirl brouhaha - being a grown-up, she just writes, and gives dinners, both phenomenally well (though on the dinners I only have hearsay). If you think you're seeing fawning fangirls in her comments, in this case it's not because of the usual reasons, but because she actually, simply, Just Is That Good.

And you know? She is right, and you guys are idiots.

I'm kicking the FW habit now, and will probably be a bit better as a person for it. High time to grow up, I suppose.
