Thank you, anonymouse!

Dirk Benedict has apparently never spent a little too much time in his Starbuck uniform and can't believe they made him his character an OMGWOMAN.

Alas, this is a reprint of an article he wrote-- anyone have a link to any discussion of this?

Edit: Apparently this has been wanked before. If anyone has a link so we can relive the happy memories...

It's been in f_w before. Maybe around or before when the pilot aired?

Dirk Benedict's article was on f_w before? I only recall wank in general about the new BG.

Well, considering that I agree the new Battlestar Galactica sucks ass, mainly because Starbuck is now a woman and the cylons aren't robots anymore, I suppose I should refrain from commenting here.

Oops. Too late.

It's so much more fun this way though! I haven't watched more than an episode of the old BG and haven't watched the new series at all, so I have no opinion, aside from "Dirk Benedict needs to step away from his character."

OMG what, no robots anymore?!!
The cylons were THE robots! When I think about it, they were more like a crash between R2D2 and a first age arcade tennis game, but whatever.

Actually.. hate to say it, but I had to crack up many, many times reading the article. A lot of what he says is painfully true, even given the premise that Hatch and Benedict REALLY, REALLY do apparently think they created the show...

Richard Hatch is a cool guy in person. My friend and I ended up chatting with him in the check-in line at a hotel when he was a guest at I-CON. Neither of us had any idea who he was, and after he got his room key and left, we were all "he had a con staffer with him. Was he someone important?" And then some guy behind us in line freaked out on us for not knowing who HATCH THE GREAT AND POWERFUL was. I would so like to end this anecdote by saying "so then I punched him," but we just ignored him.

A lot of what he said was true. But the fact that Dirk Benedict took the time to write all that the fans were thinking makes me think he needs to "step away from the character" and find a way to get busy so he doesn't write wank like this.

Dirk Benedict as "Starbuck" was one of my first crushes when I was a kid.

It makes me said they made "Starbuck" a girl character. The original was so crush inspiring.

Men hand out cigars. Women ‘hand out’ babies. And thus the world, for thousands of years, has gone round.

...right. And, you know, while I'm not familiar with the show, maybe the problem with him flirting with everyone in sight and chainsmoking quite possibly had something to do with the fact that they didn't like their character being portrayed that way in the first place? He does make it sound like that's HIS imagining of the character, and that as the actor, he should be able to make it totally his, but he can't believe that another version of said character would be different not just from the base, but from HIS?

Wow. Wanky actor. My question is, is he his own BNF? And what's the matter with moral ambiguity? I like feeling something for my antagonists, it makes the protagonists all the more convincing.

meh

I'm torn, because Dirk Benedict is one of my very earliest crushes and he's always seemed so damned cool before. At the same time, the new BG is actually pretty good! You just have to forget that it's a remake and pretend it's an all new show.

Damn, I don't know what to think. I'll solve the problem by pretending that the lovely Dirk never said anything about it and is not wanky in the slightest. And go and watch old A-Team re-runs on Bravo.

Hmm. I just read the article, and Mr. Benedict is cordially invited to kiss my ass. I have seen neither the orignal show nor the remake, so from my unbiased perspective, his ego is crushing the life from his brain, and could he be more sexist and reactionary if he tried?

Wow.

How nice that Dirk Benedict created this character all on his lonesome... no writing team, no production team... I suppose he sewed his own costumes and did his own makeup too.

Poooooooooor Dirk! Those mean girls are taking over the world! (even if we *do* add up to half the population, we have no business doing anything other than popping out babies, apparently).

I wasn't pleased with the idea of a female Starbuck. But I may just watch the remake now, just to piss Dirk off. (Too bad, because he *was* one of my early actor-crushes too)

What a douche. If he was the writer and actually had any say in it but was overruled I'd have to agree but he's just an actor. One of those "You remember that guy?" types so he should learn to shut up and sit down and let his fame die out slowly and painlessly like it was supposed to.

I've never seen the original but I have seen the new mini-series and it's really pretty good. I don't even watch sci-fi tv shows because I can't really stand them all that much but this one's got me hooked.

He appeared with Katee Sackoff (sp?) in the SciFi Channel's Lowdown special on the miniseries (not the Lowdown on the actual series), and they seemed to be having a great time; he gave her a cigar, I think, while they sat at a table at... Starbucks.

Maybe that was after this was written? (I admit I haven't clicked the link.)

while the female characters are decisive, bold, angry as hell, puffing cigars (gasp) and not about to take it any more.

Yeah how dare those horrible women do things that don't involve them being barefoot and pregnant. They should all get back in the kitchen and make 'Starbuck' some pie!

I'm torn between thinking he's a total sexist ass and agreeing with some of what he says.

The Hollywood and New York suits do need to get their heads out of their asses, and come up with new ideas. Frankly, I hate most re-imagings; they tend never to live up to the original.

And that kind of (simplistic) thinking went out with Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and Katharine Hepburn and John Wayne and, well the original Battlestar Galactica.

Funny he put Maggie Thatcher (first female PM in the UK), and Kate Hepburn, who smoked a cigar in Bringing Up Baby, pretended to be a man in Sylvia Scarlet, and was raised by her parents to consider herself the equal of any man.

The world of Lorne Greene (Adama) and Fred Astaire (Starbuck’s Poppa), and Dirk Benedict (Starbuck).

Hey, Dirk, let's be honest. Considering how many sons Fred Astaire had in all the various TV shows he guested on, the likelihood is that if he was still alive, he'd be the re-imagined Starbuck's father, too.

Someone smack Mr. Benedict upside the head, stat.

I like the new Starbuck, even though my brain refuses to admit that she's the 'real' Starbuck. She's a cool pilot either way.

On the other hand, I hate the new Apollo. Quit whining, please, kthxdie.

"Men hand out cigars. Women ‘hand out’ babies."

OH BITCH YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT.

From that point on, my attitude towards him changed from "yeah, I see where you're coming from" to "dear Dirk, pls go eat a dick".

But 40 years of feminism have taken their toll. The war against masculinity has been won.

Riiiiight. Because the six-foot tall former lingerie models who f**k you to death is perfectly in line with what the feminists have been fighting for for forty years.
