Princess Tutu Wank
First wank - I couldn't stand it anymore. Please be gentle.

This all used to be in the main Tutu release thread, but apparently the mod moved it all into it's own "debate" thread an hour or so ago. All the better.

It starts out pretty normal, with the users on the AnimeOnDVD forums celebrating the DVD release of a pretty good show (or at least, they were in the original thread). Then, aleczman chimes in with his opinion that he rates the show itself A+, but feels negatively about the release and didn't buy it. Why? Because ADV has decided to translate Ahiru's name directly as "Duck" in both the English dub and subtitles.

(I should explain here that "ahiru" is the japanese word for "duck". And, unlike the English names "June" or "Patience", "Ahiru" is not a Japanese name. And, Ahiru actually is a duck (transformed into a girl, but nonetheless). And, the show is constantly doing puns based on Ahiru's name.)

Things go on pretty un-wankily for a while, with various users bashing the cover art, etc. (and, in the original thread, calmly debating the name change). Then, HawkEyeTS weighs in that he also won't be buying the release, even though he likes the show, due to "mediocre cover art, complete lack of a box, and the presence of not only 1, but 2 english dub commentary tracks," with the name change in the subtitles being "the deal breaker." (Apparently, he knows enough Japanese to get by, but uses subtitles to help.)

Gatts replies that he's not quite sure why everyone's so up in arms about the name translation, but if you're pissed, why don't you go and get the R2 (Japanese) release and watch it untranslated, since you know Japanese anyway?

KerochanNoMiko apparently takes this as a personal affront, even though it's not directed at her, and continues to do so.

And it all goes downhill from there, with accusations of trolling, dub bashing, etc.

And, the icing on the cake - apparently this is a repeat of a thread that happened back in November. This is the second time that they've wanked over the name of a girl in an animated kids' show who changes into Princess Tutu. Who also changes into a duck. Who, in girl-form, goes to ballet school where a giant cat teaches.

It just feels so surreal...but I guess I shouldn't be surprised anymore.

Edit: Make that the third time.

Edit Again: Just had to post this little gem by Vicious: "You want to know why you're an 'elitist'? Because of those comments you just made. You still think all blacks need to sit in the back of the bus too? I mean why stop with dub fans? That's why you're an elitist!!!" Which, as jarhead puts it, is the "biggest non sequitur EVER."

Honestly. Bitching about "Ahiru" becoming "Duck" is stupid. BE HAPPY IT'S OUT. Tutu is a wonderful, wonderful little show, much in the vein of Utena, and the more shows like THAT we get, the better. Anime's more than just endless releases of Super Clumsy Catgirl Bondage Maid Harem Show #6,987,033. ;p

Heck, there IS a Super Clumsy Catgirl Bondage Maid Harem Show. It's called Amazing Nurse Nanako, though SCCBMHS would be a much better name for it :P

Hahahaha!!

For a while I've been wanting a Neko-sensei icon that says "If you wank... YOU MUST MARRY ME!!" 'Course, if he said that, he'd have a harem consisting of a gazilliion wives and husbands by now.

in the vein of Utena

Yeah, from what I've seen (not much, given) 'Tutu is like Utena for kiddies. Or maybe I just haven't seen the ep where they all have sex in a red jag yet.

Tutu wank! *loves* I'm just glad the DVD's coming out; I was afraid they'd take forever releasing it since it'[s such a nice little show that too few people seem to be aware of. Heck, the fansubbers spent the first half of the series using the incorrect names and no one really cared as far as I saw. ADV can translate the name as they like, I just want my pretty shiny official DVD.

God, I love Tutu.

I also hate the change to "Duck", but that's because I loved the named Ahiru. But hey, at least the show it out. It's a beautiful series, and these people need to suck it up. Just don't watch the English dub and mentally change Duck to Ahira when you se the subtitles.

Am I the only one who wanted them to translate the name? Honestly, it wouldn't make sense if they didn't translate it. They'd have to change loads of dialogue to work around the untranslated name, and that would bug me a whole lot more.

Personally, I wanted her to be called "Duckie," but I'll take what I can get.

Man, you too? My first thought when I heard that they were going to translate the name was "they should call her Duckie - sounds more like a nickname, and still gets the puns across."

I thought I was the only one!

Too late now, though...

Is this one really good for kids? I'm trying to get the almost 8 year old to watch something besides Inuyasha and Sailor Moon.

Oh, wow, do I feel your pain. Hmm, let me think...a good show for an eight year old...well, I don't know if you have cable, or if your cable has this channel, but I found out today that the ABC Family channel plays an hour of Digimon every night. I think that's a pretty good show, and isn't quite as annoying as Sailormoon or Inuyasha. It can be, at times, but I still have love for Digimon, while I'm trying to distance myself from all things Inu and Moon.

Yugioh's also a good show, but beware the intense merchandise drive. It's a great show for a kid on its own, but all the shinies you can get in the store might be a problem.

*whispers so the purists don't hear* Fox is also showing Shaman King and One Piece in their "Fox Box" lineup. I've never seen the shows, but the mangas are awesome, and if Fox got a hold of it, it's safe for your kid to watch. And, if anyone asks...you didn't hear that from me. >_>;

So, I hope that helps some. I tend to watch the older anime, so I'm having trouble thinking of stuff that's released solely on DVD that would be children-worthy. The lucky thing is, nowadays, children anime is plentiful for free on TV. ^_^

Risky/Safety and A Little Snow Fairy Sugar would be good for kids (I think). The first is pretty cute, and the second is "Diabetics beware!!" cute, but neither have much action in them. As for Princess Tutu... I dunno, seems a little deep for an 8 year old, but maybe I'm underestimating 8 year olds.

Hmm, tough one. The folks over on AnimeOnDVD are talking about this too, and some are saying that the first season is appropriate for 4 and up, and the second season, while a little more dark, is fine for 8 and up. I don't know if I'd go that far, though - there are some pretty disturbing things in the show which might really bother some children. Depends on the child, I guess.

Think of it this way: you know the OLD, unsanitized fairy tales, before the Brothers Grimm got to them and tidied them up? Princess Tutu leans more toward those than the sanitized ones. Mind you, there isn't any Snow White being knocked up by the prince whilst asleep and waking to the babes suckling on her breasts, but there IS some stuff with a close feel to, say, the original version of Cinderella, where the step sisters cut off their own heels to fit into the shoe, or the White Cat, where the cat told the youngest son to cut off her head (it turned out, to break her curse and turn her human, but still...)

Mind you, this is coming from someone who's STRONGLY considering showing Princess Tutu to her just-turned-4 niece, so take this with a grain of salt. (Though, this is the same kid who laughs at "Scream 3", fast-forwards to the "scary part" of "Spirited Away", and regularly declares that someone is dead when playing, so she might not be that representative of your normal 4-year-old.)

Does anyone know what age group the show was aimed at in Japan? I tend to think 5-15 year-old girls (with a strong dash of "and the otaku will love it, too"), but then again, Japan is a lot more lenient in what it feels is appropriate for children than the west is.

I can't really go into much detail without spoiling the story, and this show is too good to spoil. Even if you don't get it for your kid, consider getting it for yourself.

Tutu suitable for 8 year olds to adults!
(Anonymous)
2005-11-24 03:57 am UTC (link)
I'm 23 and I LOVE Tutu. I think an 8 year old would love it. Children may not GET all of it, but the main storyline is simple enough for small children to follow (unlike Utena--though I never saw more than pieces of that show) and deep enough for adults to enjoy. The show starts off fanciful and "darkens" progressively, but it's not really "scary" unless your child is extremely sensitive. The violence is extremely minimal and leans toward the theatric, but the plot and character development is superb. In fact, a lot of the show is like watching a play or (yay!) like reading a story book.

I would recommend it to anybody who is open-minded to ballet! In fact, I think the show has a lot of culture in it and would be good even for people who don't like ballet, lol.

Why people are so pissed off by the fact that other people don't like it, I have no clue.

...ow.

So, they complain because the script writers don't find correct ways to translate the puns, so when they finally do...they complain because they did.

AUGH! Why can't we just watch our little cartoons and be happy?! *gets mauled by fifty rabid anime fans for calling anime a "cartoon"*

Wow. Glad I got ahold of a fansub where the name wasn't translated (to me, 'Duck' would have ruined the flow a little) but still! I wouldn't be having issues if it had been changed to "Duck" or "Duckie"...

Wow. Surreal little series. Am loving it.

AoD finally got wanked, amazing.

I'm still surprised none of the Box Construction wank ever gets posted here. I'd do it myself, but I tend to end up hip deep in it.

And I missed most of that topic, having lost internet for several days and only managing to get online once at school.
