Are clowns a fandom?
Clownz dot com is a light-hearted website for people who dislike clowns. It includes such things as news articles about the lynching of a Ronald McDonald statue, a list of movies with scary clowns in them, etcetera. There's also a page devoted to their hilarious hate mail.

Item #1 is a letter from a fellow who claims the website is 'a complete display of hatred toward the art of clowning' and wants the site owner to 'remove all detrimental and/or destructive graphics and materials from your page'. There is a vague threat of internet lawyers.

Item #2 really does feature internet lawyers... specifially, internet lawyers representing BOZO (always in all-caps) the clown, threatening to sue the site owner for using an image of BOZO. Fair enough. What makes me laugh is that somebody at the company has apparently taken the proactive step of not only copyrighting BOZO... but copyrighting the idea of putting his face behind the international prohibition symbol. I kid you not.

Amusing stuff.

Don't laugh. Bozo was big money back in the 50's and 60's, and the character is copyrighted. There's gold in them thar hills, pardner.

Ahahahaha this reminds me of this story my mom said happened in my hometown in New Jersey. So this kid keeps complaining that he's afraid of the clown that lives in their house. And the parents are like, "um, cracked-out child," so they don't really address it. The kid keeps saying that's he's really afraid, but the parents are like, "Honey, he doesn't exist, don't worry." So then one day the babysitter calls the parents and says, "Uh, he's really afraid of the clown. What do I do?" and the parents are like, "The clown...?" and the babysitter says, "You know, the midget clown that's living in your house?" And the parents are like, "...call the police." It turned out this midget was living in this family's attic and coming down at night dressed as a clown and stealing their food. He'd been living there for like a MONTH before the parents actually figured out that he was real and not a figment of their child's imagination.

And that's why I don't trust clowns. Actually, it was just an excuse to tell that story because it cracks me up.

Heh! When I worked at Sick Kid's Hospital in Toronto, several of the cities biggest CEOs (Molson, Rowntree, ect.) used to dress up as clowns for fundraising. I had to kick them off the unit, because they were making the little ones cry.

When I worked at Zippos Circus, there was this clown who was really nice to me, out of costume and in. Which was all well and good, until the day when I was in one of the dark corners of the Big Top during the show. He tapped me on the shoulder, I turned round, and this hideously white, expressionless face confronted me.

I almost had a heart attack.

I liked the guy, I really did. But it would be so easy to eat someone backstage in the Big Top during a show.

Although I fear, compared to other people's trauma, that this is nothing. *sighs* *is never emotionally damaged enough to fit in*

*whimpers* I shouldn't have read this thred. Clowns scare me. A lot.

Actually, in real life they don't. But in movies and books they scare the bejeezus out of me. Is there a word for someone who only has a phobia of imaginary clowns?

But isn't everybody frightened and disturbed by clowns? I thought that was just, you know, a fact of life. The three universal horrors: death, pain and clowns.

Everyone I know is scared of clowns. Because they are wrong and clearly bad.

Especially the upside down clowns that lived in the window of the sitting room omg! My mum said it was stained glass but I knew better. Oh yes! Clowns! O. M. G. Tricksy things with the hiding.

Ha, that reminds me... there's a restaurant here where I live, called Bozo's. It's been around for ages - since the 20's or 30's I think. In the 70's, BOZO (the clown) catches wind of it and decides to sue them because they're using his name. It got tossed out since Bozo's the restaurant had been around way longer than BOZO the clown... but it cracks me up... only a clown would try to sue a tiny mom and pop joint in the middle of nowhere.

I'm intrigued by this clown fear. I've never feared them at all, and I always thought people were just joking when they said they were scared. But now I'm starting to think y'all are serious. Is it the idea of a grotesquely painted stranger looming over your childlike form? Is it an unconscious memory of the more sinister trickster figures throughout world mythology? Are clowns scary because of the John Wayne Gacy thing, or was he drawn to clowns because they are somehow innately horrifying? Do the bulbous red noses remind people of uncomfortable holidays with alcoholic relatives?

Or maybe, it's just the machetes they all keep in those floppy shoes. I don't know.

Did anyone else play The Seventh Guest? Does anyone else remember that ghost clown that used to appear in the billiard room grinning evilly and saying "YOU WANT A BALLOON, SONNY? YOU WANT A BALLOON?!"

Oh my god, I didn't sleep for days.

I was never bothered by clowns until I was sent a link to a fetish site (for a book, now also a small community, no pr0n) with an article about a porn clown with a clown fetish. From that day on, clowns are on my list of Evil Things.

I was at Circus Circus sometime in the recent past (being a very late teenager...right). I was with the family, and while watching a show, one of the clowns attempted to sit on my lap. Needless to say, i was nearly in hysterics, which resulted in my quite-old and slightly infirm grandfather threatening to beat up the scary clown.

..It was amazing. Or would have been, had I not been so traumatised by it all.

..I made them take me out to a very nice dinner for putting me through that. It was good.
