Classic Film + Classic "I'm leaving this community!" = Wankiness!
Classic_film maybe hasn't been the funnest place on the web, lately. Once in awhile there'll be an intelligent disscussion, but a lot of posts lately have consisted of "OMG! Clark Gable is teh hot!!!!111"

Garbomonroe takes issue with this, but decides to say it in a way that's a little wanky:

This is the only classic film community (that I know of) that actually has people in it who post useful things, so I'm kind of forced to be a member, if I want to be in such a community at all. I have a few guidelines that I follow when I post in communities, and I think that everyone in here should try to follow them too, to make this community as enjoyable as possible to everyone. I am respectfully suggesting these things, so if you disagree, please do so respectfully. Also, other classic flim community recommendations are welcome.

1. Not many people want to see watermarked images like those from Getty. They really aren't good for anything. If someone has a favorite star, chances are they've seen the image in HQ, unwatermarked.
2. Always post without specifying a text color. I'm sure that whatever color you pick will interfere with 90% of other members' layouts, in a way that will make your post unreadable. That's not beneficial to anyone.
3. Try to avoid posting in a community just because you are bored or have some random thought- this is what your personal journal is for. Remember that not everyone is interested in the pair of shoes you saw today that reminded you of Jean Harlow.
4. Avoid posting things like "OMG, i love gene, what's your favourite gene movie? OMG". You might say "_______ is my favorite movie because of blah blah blah. What is your favorite, and why?" Also, no one wants to hear that "OMG! I love classic movies! I think I was born in the wrong decade. Anyone else agree?" Belive me, we have ALL seen that too many times.
5. Things to remember in general: A) Some people still have dial up, which means that they have to wait for your page to load in addition to their entire friends page. B) Just because you're excited doesn't mean that everyone else will be. Think carefully before posting. Ask yourself, "How would this contribute to the community? Will anyone find anything useful in this post?"

EDIT:
6. Make sure your post is relevant. If your post is not about or directly related to a classic flim star or movie, it belongs in another community or your personal journal.

EDIT AGAIN:
suzycat was nice enough to let me know that my initial post came across as "dictatorial" (thanks for not saying "bitchy"). I just wanted to clarify that I completely don't expect anyone at all to change to my way of thinking if they don't want to do so. I'm just throwing my ideas out there."

The post gets deleted, as garbomonroe isn't a mod and complaints are supposed to be brought up to the mods, not posted.

That leads to this post.

I'm pretty mad that my entry, "Reflections" got deleted (with no reason given). I didn't say anything bad in it, though it was a complaint. It seems like only one person was actually being a bitch, even though several people disagreed.

Anyway, I'm leaving this community. It obviously isn't meeting my needs anymore. Bye.

Since I'm leaving anyway, I might as well say: Garlandswooner, you are the MOST annoying and stupid person I have ever had the displeasure of encountering online or in real life. And please, don't ever post pictures of yourself again, for the sake of other members. You are EXTREMELY hard on the eyes.

I tried being polite, and it's obviously not appreciated by the moderator of this community or a certain ugly, annoying member, so I'm done being nice. To those of you who left nice replies, whether you were agreeing or disagreeing, I thank you again.

It doesn't get that much wankier, unfortunatley. A splinter group is made (called "The Non-Frivilous Classic Film Community"... oh jeez), some people agree, others agree but think that her personal remarks about garlandswooner were out of line, blah blah blah. Should all die out pretty quickly, unless garlandswooner shows up. Until then, I marvel at the fandom laws that were broken in this little post.

Edit: Minor grammar gaffe.
Edit 2: Oooh! Baleeted. And there goes garlandswooner.

It reminded me of the scorned contestants on American Idol who get rejected and are all like..."Okay like, I may not be the best singer, but Simon is an ugly JERK!!" as if that's going to help anything.

Yeah, it was just a bit snotty. Plus it was pretty much a sideways swipe at one member.

However, "I think this community sucks but OMG it is all I have therefore please change it" was truly delicious.

I wholeheartedly agree with that, but only because I am an HTMLNazi.
But acting like a mod when she's not...wanky.

I was cringing within the first three sentences of her 'reflections'.

so I'm kind of forced to be a member
What? Being forced to be a member of a livejournal community? Is some internet terrorist holding an internet gun to your head. No one gets forced to join a community.

I have a few guidelines that I follow when I post in communities, and I think that everyone in here should try to follow them too,
Because apparently hers is the one and true way to post in communities. Let us all take note and follow her guidelines here at fandom_wank.

"How would this contribute to the community? Will anyone find anything useful in this post?"

I think that would pretty much kill fandom_wank. Where would we be without our "Okay!" "Now he ded from coke!" and "Icon!" posts. ^_^

That's what I'm saying. Besides, if you don't like the community you could always start one of your own.

if you don't like the community you could always start one of your own.

The problem is to get the regular posters of 'useful' and 'inside' information to join and post in your comm. Otherwise you have to suck it up and remain a member of whatever community it is they're posting to.

No, but I sympathize with the wankah in this point.

You're obsessed with "X". You join a community where loads of informative things are posted about "X", things that, weren't you a member of said community, you probably wouldn't know about. However, in order to read the informative stuff and feed your obsession, you have to skim trough 45678 entries like "Hey, I was walking to school today and was reminded of X! How cool is that?!?!" *adds gigantic picture of person walking to school; no lj-cut*

If you really want to stay up to date with the subject of your interest, you probably will remain a member of the comm, but it won't be a pleasant experience.

Do I get a speshul prize for calling the wank in *the very first comment*? You'll have to believe me because of bahletion. But it's totally true! MEEEEE!!

The subsequent comments weren't too bad, or particularly funny, and Hitler wasn't invoked. But unfortunately garlandswooner took it very personally, and no wonder, since she's the primary offender for "OMG!" and pink text and general teeny squeeing.

I think garlandswooner is approximately 12 and has just discovered that there are movies not in colour and with pretty dresses and dancing in them, and therefore her squeeing is entirely acceptable.

But just because it drives me completely batty.

Ahhhh... that fills in a few blanks. Thanks. :-)

And yeah, while calling her ugly was way out of line, Garlandswooner's posts can be annoying. I was actually upset when she deleted her "What's wrong with blackface?" post, because at least the ensuing "How dare you say that! Watch Bamboozled now!" posts were INTERESTING.

I don't have a transcription. I didn't think it would get deleted, so I didn't keep it. It was basically along the lines of, "I'm leaving! I'm sorry if I was being a bitch! I just wanted to make this community happy and fun but I see now that nobody cares! Good-bye! [slams door!]" (And yeah, she did do the "slams door" effect.)

Kryten: "And since we will no longer remember any of this, I will take this opportunity to tell you that you are the most obnoxious, jumped-up, farty little smeg-head it has ever been my misfortune to encounter!"
