World of...Wank?
Anyone who's been to the official World of Warcraft forums knows full well that even on a good day, the place is nothing more than a festering pit of wank waiting to happen. Just open up any thread, and the locals are whining about one thing or the other being in need of nerfing or love.

Just like any other MMO BBS.

Until today.

Today all hell silly breaks loose as a post that many speculate to be a personal beef misposted to the forums runs nuts with wank. A wank born of...barely being behind someone in levelling.

Somewhere, a Gnome cries as a rogue leaves them in the "dust". Funny thing, too, because she's this whiny about being left not even 1/4 of a level behind someone. Imagine if they'd REALLY got above her.

The community at large lets loose on "her" for the misplaced and really really sad post. Look for such wonderful highlights as "Looks like someone's baggage train crashed", "nerf girls" and "as the gnome turns", a new soap opera based on teh crazy unleashed.

World of Wank ahoy.

Edit: Also, Hi Ellery, I know you're reading this. Much love for pointing out teh crazy. :D

I don't know whether to be angry that I can't find a copy of the game or grateful since the servers keep on going down.

Nice to see that the wank is free though.

Good luck finding a copy. Blizzard had them pulled from the shelves and I'm pretty sure they've disabled account creation (under pretense of an "error" on the page) in order to try to regain stability.

What I heard is that they didn't pull them from the shelves so much as not restock them. We got one copy at BestBuy because it was in the back as the cover was ripped in shipping.

Of course, being the magnanimous soul that I am, I let my husband use the account key. So now I'm stuck waiting until they release more copies and he's playing and levelling and having fun. *sighs*

Make sure you get it into his head that this means he owes you in game. Armor, travel expenses, an escort through the wetlands when you need it to get to Menethal so you can hop the Elf Boat...

Poor girl. No hope of that one dying a quick death. Usually those forums move so damn fast.

Though, the "Nerf Paladins!" threads and the like have much more wank in them. You got your fanbois, your whiners, your haters. Good times, good times. Let's not forget the server bitching. I lucked out in the fact that my guild leader picked a low pop server and I don't have the problems that a lot of them have...

I'm lucky I picked a low pop one too, and dragged my fiends along with. Now the worst I have is the one a week down day, and occasional login server issues. No lines, no constant downtimes.

Eonar.

It's a beautiful thing.

I'm on Elune, myself. We have Alliance on Elune and Horde on Uther--one of the ones with huge issues. Most of the guild is playing Alliance right now anyway, so it's a moot point. :)

I've got 3 alts, but none of them are higher than level 12. ^_^;; I play them mostly to get away from irritations with my hunter, but I don't get frustrated that often with him, so they don't get played a lot. :) Besides, it's kind of interesting to be known on sight by a fair number of players on the server, whether it for my name, my pet, or my guild (Squirrel Masters).

Over a computer game. A fucking computer game. She acts like he left her at the altar or something.

Each player chooses a profession when they get into a game, for example, warlock, priest, paladin, or rogue. Massive Multi-player Online Role-Playing Games, or MMORPGs, have delicate economies - so it often comes to light when the game is launched that one profession or the other is overpowered. The cry then comes to "nerf" that profession, or make it weaker (and thus like a Nerf product), to make things fairer to those who do not have that profession.

From what I've seen from Star Wars Galaxies, unless something is *really really wrong* with a profession, nerfing creates more problems than it solves. You'll never have a perfect profession economy in an MMORPG, because you can never make different attributes equal.

I think the real problem here is that a lot of immature jackasses are attracted to rogue, and have learned to exploit it in PvP. Nerfing it won't fix anything; implementing the honor system (where "dishonorable" kills hurt your character) would make a dent.

Ahhh, I see.

Except the irony is that these same people found a good way to turn that dishonor system to their advantage so dishonor probably won't be implemented any time soon. If you're curious (or anybody else is) as to what their asstastic way of fucking with the dishonor system was, guilds would all have lvl 1 alts and when an enemy group would raid, they would bring out those alts, get killed, and the raiding group would get major dishonor for it.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]altoidsaddict
2005-01-23 12:46 am UTC (link)
Yeah, the problems with the dishonor system concern me, and I'm all for hearing the cons - but most of the time the only con I ever hear is "but that would ruin my ganking." I wouldn't want for a level 60 to get dishonor just because a level 1 alt decided to pick a fight. The system has to limit lower-levels, not just the high-levels; I've seen lower-levels group up and then jump on a higher-level while he's in combat, and it isn't any righter just because he might waste two or three of them before he dies.

My ideal honor system:
1. Free-for-all within town borders. Raids are not the problem here. If this is not doable in the program, within a certain radius of an inn would work.
2. PvP outside of town borders is limited to within 5 player levels in either direction.
3. If Person A is in combat with (insert non-NPC/non-player character here), or has finished combat in the last 15 seconds, they are in a "safe zone." If Person B jumps them, Person B's hitpoints are limited at Person A's level for the next five minutes. Sort of like res sickness. For example, if you have 1000 hitpoints, and you jump someone when they're down to 100, your max is now automatically 100 for five minutes.

Not that Blizzard would ever do it that way, but that's the best way I can think of to make it fair for everyone - the honor system shouldn't be an excuse to nerf high-levels, after all.

[info]wolfsamurai
2005-01-23 02:20 am UTC (link)
All of those would be really nice, but I think even PvPers wouldn't stand for some of those chances. I personally think they're all good, but as you say that gets in the way of the ganking-is-okay mindset that seems to dominate the PvP servers. They don't ~want~ fair. They want to be uber/l337/all powerful. They want all of the perks without any of the downsides. That's why Blizzard isn't planning on implementing dishonor (at least for now). Too many people who are asshats in real life look for loopholes and ways around it, just like people who find ways to force someone into PvP on PvE servers.

We've had the wank a looong time now, since before the game was beyond beta. This is just the first time I've bothered posting it.

Also, agreed on the other part. There was a lovely fight in Elwynn general last night on Eonar between a guy chanspamming for people to join his guild and people who wanted him to shut the hell up, which turned into a whinefest about what guilds should be about.

I'm glad I actually ended the fight. I chimed in "My guild, when I get this character into it, is all about one thing and one thing only: Being one of three people stupid enough to have the words Wench Auction hovering over their head."

There was a distinct lack of comeback for that. :D

The thread has lots of great mockery, such as:

As I stood there drinking my newly conjured water, you walked by without even so much as a hello.

I felt slighted.

I asked you many times to acknowledge me, but you passed on by. And then you cut me even deeper by waving to some strange Paladin you don't even know.

Did the time we spend killing kobald vermin not mean anything to you...I love you.
from Bowdi.

Then the simple yet still hilarious:

WTB 1 Life for a gnome PST from Criskringle.

And Serbaa's illuminating illustration.

But, in response to a joking suggestion for everyone to make alts on the OP's server in order to ask her just how crazy she is, Tzo wins the thread:

That's an excellent idea. They'd all have to be rogues, of course. A circle of 100 gnome rogues surround her, chanting "4 more bars! Do you want help? What's wrong? 4 more bars! Do you want help?...."

I think it's trying to cram a full size set of emotional instability into a pint-sized body.....
