O.O
Browsing through IMDb, I stumbled on this gem in the Ghostbusters forum.

It all started when marcward11 posted:

we all HATED Winston when this film first came out!

....and i still do!
i donno why, maybe because he joined in later on in the movie and really didn't add anything to the film.

I remeber watching the 2nd movie and thinking "thank god winston isn't in this one" then guess who turns up?WINSTON!!

Does anybody out there feel the same way i do about winston?he almost ruined the film.

ps

i hate you winston.

And the spooge (or slime?) goes flying in all directions. There are accusations of racism, long diatribes of why Winston is important in the movie, announcements of how stupid the thread is, and many comment deletions. The Ghostbusters are even compared to the Beatles and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(!).

The best comment though, is from The Keymaster

I cannot believe this thread is still going. I think I posted in it a year ago.

Can't you folks argue about something more ridiculous? Like, say, the color of Egon's pants?

XD

I read that as "panties" at first, which I do not see as an unreasonable mistake, this being fandom wank and all ... why am I so dissapointed that it's NOT panties?

OMG geek!love for Egon....
Remember, those science girls liked his big head...and his epydidimus(sp?) in Ghostbusters II. How many other people had to look that word up back then?

I know I did, but then I was only 11 or so.

You know Egon got laid between those movies because he's so much looser in the second movie. I love when they come out of the courtroom after busting the Scoleris and Egon's just standing there with his thrower in the crook of his arm like "Yeah, I'm the shit."

Why would he be wondering that about the second movie? Winston's one of the first Ghostbusters in it.

Back in the day, I reserved my Ghostbusters wank for Ray Parker, Jr.'s ripoff of a Huey Lewis song. I remember as an 8-year-old sitting in the theatre thinking, "They ripped off I Want A New Drug." It was that obvious. But, hey, the movie had a scene in a library with a ghost in it right off the bat, which ensured I was gonna go see it again.

Wait, who hated Winston? What? Did I miss a meeting? Because I saw that in the theater and I certainly didn't hate him.

As far as I can tell, the objection is that Winston is a "tag-along" who doesn't fit into the Ray-Egon-Venkman chemistry. Which I can understand to a point but I think the OP is making a huge deal out of nothing and ignoring the entire reason that Winston is there--to bridge the gap between the high science of the trio and the layman's understand of the audience.

Of course, if you get into The Real Ghostbusters Winston's role is deepened and broadened a little so maybe I'm just seeing it from a different angle.

Ah, yes. As a child I knew the cartoons and didn't understand why Winston was barely in the film.

Though can someone explain why they chose to have that stupid green thing in as a "regular" in the cartoon?

Hey, most of the eps of the cartoon were by JMS. So I already knew who he was way before Babylon 5.

I don't know, but apparently he was popular enough to warrent his own cartoon and comic for a while . . . I never understood Slimer's appeal--he's more annoying than anything else. Although in fanfic he's mostly pretty tolerable so long as he's not the center of attention.

I have no idea . . . I'd never have the stomach/courage to look for any. >.<

Although there probably is. If fandom has taught me one thing it's that if it can be dreamed up. someone's written it.

I know there was at least one Janine/Slimer story out there somewhere. Can't recall what it was called, though.

On a slightly funnier note...RGB die-hard fans might remember an episode called "Slimer, Is That You?" where Egon and Slimer's brains got switched. There was an odd little line in there where Janine looks at Egon-in-Slimer and says, "I really do love you for your mind."

JMS told the old GEnie forum that this line tied into a cut scene where Janine tossed Slimer-in-Egon something to eat, whereupon he showed his appreciation by slobbering and kissing her all over. You then saw Janine lure S-i-E into a bedroom, the door closed...

Yeah. THAT was what she was talking about. Woo-hoo, as the Sims might say.
