The culmination of two weeks worth of bitching...
Over on LJ's [info]silenthill comm, the past two weeks have been filled with scattered pissings and moanings about Silent Hill 4 (with the occasional Why You Hating post thrown in for good measure), but thus far, no real wank.

And then, in a shocking turn of events, one of the people doing most of the complaining comes around to see the light.

Which, inexplicably, starts people wanking with "I didn't just hate SH4 because there was no flashlight or radio - I have deep and meaningful reasons for hating it!"

Not as spicy as GameFAQs.com's "I R h4rdc0r3" wank, but interesting if you're a fan of the series. And there *was* a radio in the fourth game! It was just.... stationary. And had random commercials.

Woo! Silent Hill wankage! But...it hasn't reached epidemic proportions, has it?

"deep and meaningful" - how about retarded monsters? But I'm finally coming around to playing the rest of the game, just because. For god's sake, it's *still* entertainment!

BTW I WAS JUST PLAYING SH 4 probably as you posted in ZOMG COINCIDENCE?! I haven't touched the game since the first week I bought it!

*hides under desk*

I have been waiting for so damned long. I sat around, watching this crap build up for two weeks, checking back every so often to see if it had exploded yet.

Hopefully there'll be more to come, as the comm seems to have devolved into meaningless bitching.

I know, the lack of catfighting in SH fandom makes me rather sad. ;_; But at least the very first collapsed thread had a 'this place sucks and I'm leaving!' threat in it! :D

I dunno, the first time I played it, I thought the plot in SH4 moved veeeeeery slooooooowly. And then I went and played the original SH, and found that the plot not only moved very slowly, but also made little to no sense. So, whatever. :D I love the fourth one.

EXACTLY. Everyone's like "OMFG the graphics weren't good and the plotline is too slow and not complicated enough!"

Dude, go play the first game from the perspective of someone who HASN'T spent the last few weeks of her life browsing the internet to figure out what the fuck is going on!

I love 4 just as much as I love the others, man.

I was just attracted to this comment...

I say if your a true fan of Silent Hill, you will respect any of the games.

That line of reasoning always annoys me. If you're following a series (books, movies, games, whatever) and a new installment sucks, say it sucks! Like...in my case, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. The original FFT is still one of my favorite games of all time, and I hated the new GBA version. Just because it has the same name and a few similar elements does not mean I have to "respect" it.

I can't even be bothered to figure out exactly *what* context they're using there, but, yeah. Sometimes sequels *do* suck, and it's okay to say it.

I just personally wish they'd say it in their *own* journals. ¬_¬ But that would be common sense, right? And then where would we be? :O

I have a friend who is completely unreasonable about books like that. He cannot conceive that if an author is writing a series, then some of the books in the series may not be not as good as other books in the series. Because when an author writes a book, the result is the definitive version of the author's vision and who are we to argue with that? If we can't see the TWOO GEEEENIUS within, then it's a fault in us and not in the book.

He wants to be a writer. Strangely enough, he hasn't finished anything in years. Gee, I wonder why?

Because of course there has never been a series of anything in which either one portion really shone above the others or stank with the stink of Hell's garbage pit.

I totally hear you on the FFT thing.

And...man, there is seriously no force in the cosmos that is ever going to convince me that Megaman X6 was a good idea, even as much as I love the rest of the series.

Star Wars versus prequels...duh.

It's perfectly possible for a series of anything have its ups and downs. Being a fan of the series as a whole doesn't mean you have to be an apologist for the shit that really blew.

Yeah that reasoning makes me want to hit my head against a wall.

I don't think it's 'disrespectful' to *not like* a sequel, especially when sequels have a tendency to suck.

I hate the phrase "true fan". What a bunch of bullshit. "You're not a true fan if you don't blindly believe that every aspect of the series is genius!" "You're not a true fan if you don't pair up characters exactly how I do!" "You're not a true fan if you don't think all the creator's/author's farts smell like roses!" "You're not a true fan if you don't act like a spoiled 5-year-old fanbrat who flames and boycotts the EVIL American anime companies for daring to translate anything into icky, unholy English!"

If that's what being a true fan is all about, I'll be perfectly happy as an imaginary fan.

I love SH4. I own it (can't actually play it, since the ghosts freak me out too much, what with my haunted hallway), but I loved watching my friends play it.

It makes me incredibly happy that someone else out there likes watching other people play video games.

(though I provide useful services! I read walkthroughs when needed and I did voices for FFIX!)

Dude, am I the only that nearly pissed my pants when Walter showed up in Subway II and started shooting, then FOLLOWED me into Forest II? It scared the fucking SHIT out of me.

The sheer prospect of being hunted by not only the normal monsters, but an invincible psychomaniac whose only purpose in "life" is to MURDER you, and ghosts that can kill you simply by nearing in close PROXIMITY and are invincible as well, meanwhile you cannot seek sanctuary in your apartment because it is being invaded by malevolent, violent spirits in a gigantic mess of red-screen grain and pain... um... scared me.

Yeah.

Seriously. I actually didn't finish the game because Walter started showing up and hunting me down. Every time that chainsaw revved up my heart leaped out of my chest. I had to quit because goddamn, there were monsters everywhere, Walter was everywhere, my apartment had demon faces coming out of the wall, and there was NOWHERE TO BE SAFE.

*sighs* Ah, I feel much better.

Dude, have they forgotten how slow all of the games move? I mean, I enjoyed them, but I hated the controls and the pacing. It's like nothing nothing nothing nothinOMGMONSTER nothing nothing death. I still to this day have not beaten SH1, but every once and a while I sit down, play it, then inevitably am reminded of why it bored me and I wander off again.
