Small yet Perfectly Formed
This isn't a huge, spooge-flying wankathon.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/bad_rpers_suck/1065738.html

However, I felt that there was a certain something about the situation that made this small, yet plucky wank deserving of a shot at the big time on fandom_wank.

On Bad Rpers Suck brown__mouse posts about an Harry Potter RPG she's in where Remus Lupin jerked off Sirius Black in class and lost the house 400 points. silver_rook posts that she disapproves of all slash in rpgs and fanfiction unless it is specifically said that the character is gay.

Rann appears and they argue. silver_rook even throws in a stab at the old 'you're raping the writer's vision'.

You see? It's like bonsai wank? So small, yet it involves Harry Potter, slash, artistic integrity and there is even a little scuffle over proper spelling. Not only that but it's a wank about....wanking.

(also, I'm rather disturbed to find myself, sort of, agreeing with Rann here. I may need to stop drinking so much coffee.)

the author is reported to have two large prejudices in her life. (Please note I said "reported to" -- I have seen no substantiation, but these prejudices fit the available facts -- and a public figure who admits to bigotry is the kind of idiot I don't think that J.K. Rowlings is.)

Reportedly, the woman dislikes Americans and homosexuals.

Ah, small but irritating.
Because of course, if people aren't obviously gay, they aren't gay. *Rolls his eyes*
Plus, fanworks always have to be perfectly true to canon. No one should ever write a fic where Hermione got tired of all the work she has to do and blew off a homework assignment because "OMG!!!11 Shes teh workiholik!! She alwyas dus her work!!!! Awlays!!!!! It's canno!!!!1111!1 OMG!!!111one1"
...We're writing about wizards, witches, and magical animals, people! Why's the "1 in 10 people are gay" statistic getting pulled out? It hasn't even been proven!
*Rants and raves*
...Sorry about that. *Wipes up* Anti-slashers and canon nazis aways get my dander up.

The "heterosexual until proven otherwise" argument is a terrible one, but it's one that is generally accepted in most modern western civilizations, so I can see the OP's point. However, that doesn't mean it's not a potentially ignorant and probably prejudiced opinion, and I'm always suprised when I see it come up in fandom, because I kinda assume that by the time you're deep in this stuff enough to be participating in an rpg you've come across this sort of thing before and have learned to cope with it without getting into a massive flame war. Alas.

But, dude, yeah, wanking off in the classroom in the middle of what's supposed to be a non-sexual rp would probably tick me off, too. However if I was McGonagal I'd punish them by making them blow the Slytherin quidditch team.

I've done this wank before. :( It was over a Boy Meets Boy strip where a character assumed a gay guy was straight for no reason. Well, that was ages ago and both sides were really wanky, but it's interesting to see the debate here again.

If the author doesn't make a point of saying one way or the other, I believe that they're a fictional character who could easily be straight or gay (Even though there's varied levels, it's most likely they're straight, but woteva.), and unless the author explictly reveals the person's sexuality I have no problem.

I'm still wanky after all these years.

Some thoughts:
tourette
2005-01-25 12:45 am UTC (link)
1)Hogwarts students: if you're going to wank off in class, wait until History of Magic. It's not like Professor Binns gives a shit, whereas Professor McGonagall Sees All.

2)Although I would have thought that a mere 400 points (and later changed to 100!) from the house for that kind of behaviour is ridiculously lenient. I think it's fair to say that it's possible that it might happen, but if two boys were caught pulling one anothers' plonkers in the classroom of most schools, they'd probably be at least suspended. Not to mention shamed in front of the whole school in a speech about "Immoral Conduct".

3)Nevertheless, a boy having sexual relations with another boy is not necessarily gay. Plenty of boys experiment sexually, even boys who know girls. It's not "making them gay" any more than me, say, writing young Severus having a sex dream about younger Lucius is "making him gay".

4)If Rowling hates homosexuals, why is she BFF with Stephen Fry? Common sense, people.

I can't help but wonder what would happen if silver_rook ever read CLAMP manga, or anything else where the gay is heavily implied but not ever officially stated. Her mind would probably implode in a puff of non-logic.

From Silver Rook's user info:

On careful consideration, Silver Rook firmly believes that ignorant morons who write Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy slash fiction are the most incredibly STUPID bags of filth on the planet. Most slash is stupid and out-of-character, but that combo simply proves that the purveyors are so incredibly BLIND, IGNORANT AND COMPLETELY LACKING ANY UNDERSTANDING OF EITHER CHARACTER THAT THEY SHOULD BE EUTHANIZED!!!! (And preferably in some mind-bendingly PAINFUL fashion.)

The bolding is all his, I assure you. Man, I thought I got cross about Severus/Lily. Although that's presumably A-OK, since it's teh_notgay and therefore 100% IC.

Also, he writes about himself in the third person. Kill it!

Oh. My. Keep this guy out of my fandoms, kthnx? No, really. xDD

Actually, I'd like to see his reaction to Yami no Matsuei, where fans assume a character is gay until proven something or other. And as Matsushita has only told us one character's sexuality... Wow. This guy would have so much fun. xDDD

For that matter, I'm sure he'd have fun in ANY of my fandoms. Straight-until-proven-gay isn't always the default setting for some fandoms. No, indeed not. But when there's such /wonderful/ canon hints...
