Oh noes!1! You insulted my favourite movie! I keel you now!1!
Okay. So. Kben makes a post about "classic" movies, in which she states: I’ve come to the conclusion that Citizen Kane is boring, Apocalypse Now is too damn long (and this was BEFORE the redux), and The Godfather is the most pretentious answer to “What’s your favorite movie?” I’ve ever heard.

And that is where our drama begins. There are numerous comments from various people, some politely disagreeing with her, others downright angry. Later on, Kben attempts to explain herself.

Lots of drama and big words thrown about. All-around, it's a wank that's fun for the whole family, though a bit small.

In an Ann Coulter-ish way, you are saying people that cite the Godfather or Citizen Kane are obviously full of shit.

Is there a law regarding the mention of Ann Coulter? There should be, because somebody just lost the argument.

As a former film student and lifelong film fan, I respectfully disagree and think you might have misspoke. As someone who hopes to make their trade in words, you need to watch how you use them. Pretentious is the complete wrong word for your complaint. Pretentious has to connotation of elitist.

Semantics arguments on pretension from the mouth of a pretentious person...There is no wank like film student wank.

So true. Really, it's making me feel 19 again.

I don't know if she deserves a law all her own - putting Ann on the level of the Nazis, or even the mean girls in high school, is almost like giving her too much credit.

I would rather stab myself in the face than watch Tommy Boy again. However, I would rather watch Anchorman than The Godfather. Oooooh, maybe I'm *not* a pretentious fuck then!

(Except I really, really am.)

I would, too. Mainly because I haven't had to sit through Anchorman a bazillion times. Or at all.

On the other hand, I'd rather watch Citizen Kane than either of 'em.

I was with her up until she tried to claim that Italians are associated with the Mafia BECAUSE OF The Godfather.

Because yeah, hundreds of years of history dating back to the struggle for papal power are nothing compared to one movie.

Is it wrong that I really, really like Citizen Kane because I have a retrocrush on Joseph Cotten?

(Also, I don't really know that you could call the movie "boring." Young Orson Welles is kinda sassy.)

Young and argumentative Kane is charismatic and pretty :D

I have a love/hate relationship with this film. It's all right, and I could grow to adore it in time, but I had to study it obsessively for two months because of fabula and syuzhet and other silly things like that, and even though the story's told laregly in flashback it hardly makes the film the pinnacle of achievement with the whole idea of anti-narrative.

I also hate it because it's so cosntatntly labelled the best film ever. Which it isn't, because although it did many things that were groundbreaking and significant at the time, to a modern audience it's ideas and techniques are commonplace so it doesn't strike us as anything special. And the same goes for Birth Of A Nation.

oblique_ref:I'm fucking sick of the relentless dumbing down of american culture hiding behind the weak veneeer of "fun". there's a reason we're going to be a fallen empire in 20 years.

And if it really is watching 'Van Helsing' I will be over here shouting "And it was worth it, dumbass!".

Plus, without fallen empires there would be no movies like 'the godfather'.

Those who want to be pretentious would immediately call out Das Boot or a Fellini...

Wha-whu? But but... Das Boot... so good. And I haven't even seen most of the classic classics they talk about. Hey, so do you still look pretentious listing foreign movie favourites if you are foreign? ;)

I do like the idea of anyone listing "the Battleship Potemkin" as their all-time favourite, mind. Very snappy film, that one...
