Coming from the artists' corner of fandom, for once...
Claiming copied fanart as your own might be bad, but talking about that in public is worse. Many delicate issues definitely worth considering can arise to trouble you in an internet community, after all.

What if people opened lawsuits over you defaming their character as you wrongfully accused them in a Livejournal community of tracing other people's anime fanart at internet doodle boards? What if it would make crazed vigilantes gather to torch the accused person's house? Would you knowingly scar the emotionally retarded artists?

Rah, just one week after I get accepted into Elfwood I'm already getting my lunatic flamewar fix.

You know what's best, though? When artists start freaking out over the "theft" of a piece of fanart that was almost completely copied from canon material (be it a manga artbook, game guide, or promotional still).

"YOU TRACED MY TRACED PICTURE!!!!"

(Actually, the best was when I saw a girl claim that her art had been stolen. Her proof? The poses of the purported theif's characters were similar to the poses she had used. Of course, the accuser also at one point claimed that she had copyrighted her character's names, so...)

MiffedMidget scares the fucking beejeesees outta me... isn't that what he's trying to prevent too? prevent scarring of my little, child-like psyche?

You know, your first sentence made me believe that someone was actually bragging about having plagiarized something. Damn you for false advertising! ;)

Anyway, while all that back-and-forth ranting is too motherfucking long for me to pore through right now (my attention span's shot for the day, it seems), I do heartilly agree with the first link's OP ranting about how one should be very careful with their accusations of plagiarism: See, there was once a BNF-type from this little writing/fangirl circle that accused a friend of mine in her group's blog of plagiarizing her in a journal entry where my friend had written the beginnings of an Utena plot bunny. What exactly made her think this/what was her "proof?" Because it had the same non-canon pairing featured in some of her fics and because she referred to the world outside of Ohtori Academy as "the outside [world]." I swear, I am NOT kidding about this - I used to read that blog regularly, so I was the one to find the accusation (and immediately told my friend), and when she got back to me with what the other girl told her had made her think she was plagiarized, I was absolutely fucking speechless.

The girl deleted the accusation from the blog (Thankfully, since I apparently found it very shortly after it had been posted and it was very late at night, it seems that my friend suffered no damage.), but she never publicly apologized for her mistake (Hell, my friend showed me the reply, and she didn't really sound all that apologetic about it there either.), something that I think she seriously owed her. Apparently, some people can't swallow their own goddamn pride enough to admit how they fucked up.

You can imagine that my respect for that group seriously decreased after that.

Anyway, on to something more pleasant, and OT: I just adore your Hellsing icon. Mmm, Alucard... :D~~~~~

Heh - I'm more on the side of the hardliners when this debate comes up, I admit, but there's usually a point somewhere at both sides of a debate. Eh, even on the internet. It's just this time it led to the crrraziest out of touch with reality counter-arguments, taking it to pure entertainment level ;)

Ah, I should have brought my Iscariote icons with me here...

Oh, normally I perfectly understand and tend to agree with the angry blitzkrieg that ensues when plagiarism happens and there's solid proof, but that's just it - the person supposedly "wronged" should have very solid proof to make his/her case. That was what the OP was obviously driving at in the original entry, and I certainly can't argue with that view, especially not after being witness to my friend's experience.

The insanity and wank was definitely very much there in the replies, though. The submission is more than worthy of F_W status because of that. I'm not arguing with that particular point. :)

As for Hellsing: Iscariote? I only have the anime, so I didn't get to see all that much about them, but Father Anderson is like... ROWR in such a weird and insane manner. Oh hell, most of the main cast is just really sexy, each in their own way. I hope someone considers bringing in the manga to NA - I've seen scanlations from the first volume, and while the art isn't as slick and polished as the anime, it had a lot more of a tongue-in-cheek humor about itself, and was quite entertaining to me from that volume alone.

But yeah, much <3 for Alucard - he's got one of my favorite seiyuu (Jouji Nakata, who played Gaav [*insert assorted fangirlish ranting about how he is the bestest chara EVAR and a total hottie and how he and Valgaav were so doing it here*] in Slayers, and Folken in Escaflowne - such a deep, sexy voice. >D~~~~ Oh hell, the very reason I even checked out Hellsing was because I found out he was the lead. *LOL*), and he's so badass - it's fun to see a vampire who actually ENJOYS being a vampire for a change. ^_^

Don't worry we get all the whining we need from Anime Seras. [Manga Seras seems to be a bit more accepting.]

I've seen scanlations

That's what we need: scanlation wank!

By the way, where would one find these Hellsing scanlations? I've heard fan-fucking-tastic things about the series, but I'm too cheap to shell out for the DVDs and *sob* I no longer *weep* have access to *bawl* fan subs.

Their lack of knowledge about copyright law (real knowledge, not what a friend of a friend told them was true) makes my blood hurt.

That's epidemic. People on the Internet know jack shit about intellectual property law.
