Wank the stupid
Mock the wankers

So over on Mock the Stupid,[info]jenniferjayde, who works at an alternative radio station, made a post about someone requesting The Cure, doing the cover of 311's Love Song.
FYI, it's the other way around. Okay, fine.

[info]smu makes a comment to the effect of Bah, Phillistines.

[info]metsubosnap takes offense and calls [info]smu an "elitist prick" and demands to know how many years of musical theory do you need to get to the center of a Cure Pop. Oh, and appears to initially think that [info]smu is the OP, and uses the opportunity to take out frustration about radio.

Others begin a dogpile of 'Cure is better!' '311 is better!' 'They both suck but not as hard as you!' and there is much wank. Included is 'read before you write' and nitpicking. Also, so many $10 words thrown around that I felt the need to duck.

Small, and [info]metsubosnap seems to have taken his balls and gone home, but still entertaining.

ETA: Take it back. First of all, slight gender mixup, as going back to [info]metsubosnap's reveals that he's a boy. Fixed that. Second of all...it continues. Now there's wank over 'I left!' 'Then why are you still here?'

I am totally on the side of the music elitists on this one. That is a pretty retarded thing to request and is completely mockworthy.

The original was only a Top Ten Hit a whopping decade ago, how can anyone be expected to know it?

It isn't even like it was rereleased or anything! How could anyone born after 1940 be expected to have the faintest idea?

Man, metsubosnap, you need to take that stick out of your ass. Did you forget that music is also about expressing emotion, of which I am sure there is no amazing mathematical formula?

Hendrix was untrained, but is still considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, partly because his sound was unpolished.

I think the backpedal dance of [info]metsubosnap goes well with 'love song', either version.

Can I request J.S.B. doing his cover of the Sweetbox hit Everything's gonna be alright?

I'm just amazed that someone accusing other people of being elitist pricks can then go on a tangent about how technical superiority is the only way to effectively judge a musician. Hypocrisy much, sweety?

In fact, 311 is actually more technical and innovative than The Cure, though I hate them both. Tell, me, how many years of music theory have you studied?

Apparently now you actually need a fucking PHD to enjoy anything. "Oh, you like waffles? Tell me, how many years have you been studying said waffles? Can you tell me the difference between the Belgian and toaster varieties? CLEARLY you don't know what you're talking about. You're not fit to likc the boots of the waffles in question--Wretch!"

Lately I'm finding it harder and harder to keep from simply responding, "Eat me."

I have a feeling that Metsubosnap has been entering the murderously dull exciting world of music theory as of late. I tend to find that when someone first starts delving seriously into it, they can get a massive self-importance complex about analyzing music down to the teensiest possible level... believe me, I did the same thing when I was 17 and huge into jazz, and so did all of my jazz-friends. We'd sit there and listen to records of anybody, jazz or no, and make huge, snobby pronouncements on it. "Pssssssshhhh. This Green Day song might actually be worth listening to if he had opted to use a locrian mode for the bridge. What a chump!"

Hopefully it will wear off in a few years. It usually does, generally about the time that they play for some kind of major music figure who looks at them squarely in the eye and says, "Okay, nice chops, but you've gotta learn how to make music now."
