Web-comic Bitch-slap Fun-Fest
This one is so mind-boggling I'm amazed it hasn't shown up here all ready.

So. Rodney "Largo" Caston, formerly the writer and co-creator of the popular webcomic Megatokyo announces he will soon be a daddy, and is offered congratulations by Scott Kurtz, the guy who draws "PVP Online". These congratulations apparently contained the lovely phrase "Luckily, this is one of Rodney's creations that Fred can't steal out from under him." Because apparently Kurtz was under the impression MT was strong-armed away from Caston by Fred "Piro" Gallagher, the artist, and other co-creator of MT.
I can't find where Kurtz originally made this crack, but "Piro" mentions it here (scroll down to read his blog). In the same entry Piro offers his own version of the events that led up to him having full ownership and control of MT.
This obviously causes a big shit storm, Kurtz makes a pretense of an apology,(scroll down a bit to the entry about "anime cat girls") blaming his "half-German half-Italian heritage", and the fact that he was picked on because he was a fat kid, for his rude comment, before finally falling back on the classic "I WAS ONLY KIDDING!!" excuse.
But the biggest (public) shit storm I found was on "Largo's" blog, where Largo explained HIS side of his creative split with Piro, which, despite being amazingly similar to Piro's version of things, STILL has people... a LOT of people... insisting Piro "stole" MT away from Largo. Actually they pretty much accuse Piro of just about anything you can think of, from causing the crash-and-burn of IC Studios (MT's first publisher) to having an affair at Otakon. Be sure to wear your Hazmat suits, kids, because thed shit's being flung all over the damn place on this one. Amazing how vicious and nasty these webcomics fans can get.
There is probably a lot more nastiness going on, but frankly after reading the comments on Largo's blog I think I want to just forget the internet ever existed.

Boy, Largo sure sounds perky for a guy "held at gunpoint."

Maybe it's the PTSD. Soon he's going all Fodo on us.

I have it on good authority that he caused the LJ outage, even.

Accusing someone of having an affair at an anime convention makes your entire existence invalid.

From the several times I've met Krutz at local events he's always seemed pretty nice. But this wouldn't be the first time he and another comic artist have gotten into it. I think him and PennyArcade are in it weekly.

Being a long-term Ninja Turtles fan, this is sounding awfully familiar...no one's accused Peter Laird of 'stealing' the TMNT from Kevin Eastman (yet, that I know of), but there have been a couple of whines about how much better it would be if Kevin had full ownership because...well, because he goes to more cons, as far as I can tell. People are mad.

oh god, i'm not even going to bother reading most of this. i had seen one of Piro's rants about this and didn't know what they were going on about exactly. i think Dom had something up about it at one point, but had to edit/take it down because he was coming under attack and didn't want to deal with it.

Ah, I knew that Kurtz was up to something wanky, but I had no clue what was going on until this. Is there any major webcomic artist who isn't a complete wanker these days?

And did anyone else think that Rodney/Largo is snarking on Fred/Piro when he says:

Utilmately, Fred and I have very different attitudes towards comic strip writing...

I don't like loose ends, story threads that never resolve themselves, or strips that on their own are neither funny nor understandable. There is nothing wrong with these things mind you, I just don't prefer them.

Basically, to me, the perfect balance in a strip is one that makes the reader laugh, and does not require six hours of archives reading to 'get' on some level.

?

Actually, he summed up a lot of the reasons as to why I stopped reading Megatokyo...

I'm surprised we don't see more MT-related wank in one form or another. Piro fanboys/girls are among the most rabid I've seen and a lot of the fans who don't read anymore because the quality has gone down (in their, and my, opinion) are just as bad. Piro's the most fragile thing this side of glass, Largo is abrasive and a jerk (met him at Oni-con), throw in Scott Kurtz who is pretty good at being an ass himself and something like this was bound to happen eventually.

Unfortunately I'm due for my annual read through of MT, so I can catch up on the 10 or so strips Piro's managed to do in that time.

I stopped reading MT after Rodney left. I found the writing format that Rodney did much more amusing than anything Fred wrote afterward. I could care less about their person affairs, let it be gossip or truth. All I know is that I missed Rodney and I have since formed a dislike for MT.
