SFWA - 1, Publish America - 0
I was wondering if this qualified as a fandom, but previously, sci-fi magazine disputes have been featured on FW, and I think there is a fandom of these authors, including me.

Sequence of Events

1. Vanity Publisher Calls Itself Real Publisher
2. Vanity Publisher Insults Science Fiction Writers.
3. Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association Decides to Go After Vanity Publisher.

Science Fiction Authors Hoax Vanity Publisher

One of the participants explains further. PublishAmerica Sting: Would they publish the worst book ever written?

Make sure to read the blurbs.

ATLANTA NIGHTS makes the legendary EYE OF ARGON read like Asimov!"

The blurbs are the truly priceless part:

"I stayed upright reading it!" --Jane Yolen. And anyone who mentions Eye of Argon is right by me.

The book is clearly genius:
"You are the one with a sex-death wish," hissed Henry Archer in his ghostly presence permeating the room. "Just look at her, you know she wants you. They all want you. Except Irene! You could never have her, because she will always be mine. She cannot ever forget my youthful bodybuilder physique, the firmness and the rock-hardness of me, the only things that would satisfy. Her father does not know that his sweet innocent Irene was a wildcat in my bed. I could always make her mew. And to my musical key, none other. She purred for me like a bobcat kitten before it became fully grown, gained poundage and muscle bulk, and discovered other wildlife of its kind and ilk. Vibrant, innocent but sensual, purring. Ever purring for me, she was"

"Actually, I think I am ready to order now," said Isadore, firmly ignoring it all, flipping back his red forelocks out of his face and beyond the back to where the bulk of the abundant and suggestive ponytail rested against his wide strongly utterly virile back – a back that could do the beast with two backs so well, when one of the two backs came into question and under scrutiny (but the other back of course depended on the woman writhing with him, under him and on top of him ah, the beasts they would make!).

Ahahaha. :D This is awesome. Mad props indeed.

is it sad that I had to read the author's name several times before I figured out that it was a pun?

Well done, SFWA. You win at awesome.

I swear, this book reads just like some fanfic I've read. Chapter 23 in particular was good with the Mary-Sue and Teh Pr0n.

Bulwer-Lytton Bad Writing Competition Winner!!!

Ahhh, dear PublishAmerica. This kind of embarassment couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of frauds. While I don't believe that the people at PA actually have what it takes to feel embarassed, still it's the thought that counts.

And that insult from them to SF writers... didn't that happen some time ago?

That is a thing of both beauty and horror.

Has PublishAmerica made any official response yet to the massive burnage? A lawsuit, perhaps? Press releases saying they were in on it from the start? Calling the SFWA a bunch of big meanie poop-heads?

I can hardly wait.

See also, the Neverending PublishAmerica thread on AbsoluteWrite.

There's also a brilliant and wanky rebuttal to a less-than-positive article about them here.

Quote:

Her report was obviously meant to help those in the old elitist publishing industry. Obviously, they feel threatened.

Of the authors that she mentioned:

* One has been caught lying, in print.
* One admits on her own website to a troubled past with mental health issues "for years"

To refute Paula Span's story is child's play.
