Current music:David Bowie - Rebel Rebel

A small but promising wank in a small fandom.
The Dresden Dolls are a Boston-based band who have begun to make it pretty big in the past year. Since many of their songs feature dark topics, and since they mix cabaret into their performance and style, it's not surprising that many, shall we say, melodramatic people will be drawn to their music.

However, the band also has a sharp sense of humor and irony, and this is usually also the case with the fans. But now that they are going through that awkward transition from little known local band to indie poster children, wank is beginning to crop up. And it is not, as traditional opinion dictates, from the legions of new fans.

A series of three posts to the dresdendolls lj community has definitely demonstrated that much. It's your usual sort of suspect -- an angst filled nineteen year old boy with a Marilyn Manson avatar.

His first post is slightly strange but not that big a deal. Well, there's plenty of dramatic, wanky self-pity:

I am very excited and I will be the one up front with my disposable camera clicking away. I need to do that, I never remember the happier times in my life... So, I should keep track of them with film. Wow, that was the saddest statement ever made. {dies}

He also disses new fans, which ticks some people off, as Dolls fans aren't generally territorial indie fans who don't want anyone but a handful of people to know about their favorite band.

darling_marcus: I'm just an elitist whore, truly. Ha! Yeah, the new fans just seem to be bandwagon junkies. {shrugs}

weezercrazed: Bandwagon? So if someone starts liking a band after other people do, they're just bandwagon junkies? Whatever. People like whatever music they want, who cares if they come in a few years after the band's first album.

And yes, you ARE an elitist whore. As long as you realize that.

Second post is full of pictures of himself. Not exactly on topic.

I'll be da' fat kid acting like a complete ass up front and will perhaps be the one crying while listening to "bad Habbit". Buy me a drink, being 19 is such a bitch. I'll take either a Jack&Coke or an Absolut vodka martini, very dry, no olives.

A number of fans are slightly repulsed. A couple of fellow wankers jump to Marcus's defense (and they may be friends of his for all I know, as at least one of them has a remarkably similar icon) and bitch about the community being pretentious, a bit of an ironic statement, considering.

And then comes the third post, where he tactfully suggests that the reason why lead singer Amanda Palmer regularly wears thigh high black and white striped stockings, is not, in fact because of the band's cabaret aesthetic, but is "because she is a self injurer and mostly cuts on her legs, most do inorder to avoid the ridicule of the masses day to day."

While it seems obvious that Palmer has some history with self-injury -- that song the idiot keeps blubbering over, "Bad Habit", is on the very same subject -- people are pretty disgusted by his suggestion.

darling_marcus hasn't responded yet so who knows whether more wank will ensue.

It was really only a matter of time before that community started becoming a wank factory. *waves a little pennant*

crying while listening to "bad Habbit"

I accidentally misread this as "Bad Hobbit" at first. Which, now that I think about it, would be a different wank altogether.

Maybe she just likes to wear dresses, but finds her legs to be cold a little too often.. so one day she got the idea of putting on snazzy matching stockings?

My first thought: Who gives a shit? Why are they even discussing this?

Amanda wears the stockings because she wants to.
It is an art thing.

(Maybe the poster was trying to be funny, but I had to do it. I just had to.)

This is my favorite response so far-->

Honestly, if you have nothing better to do than to wonder about people wearing striped stockings and if they self-mutilate, you shouldn't be thinking.

Can you say: Wankity wank wank wank? But hey at least they do have a point :D

- Posting as anon because I don't have a journalfen account.

OH MAN. I knew a chick who hated men and would constantly listen to that song. In fact, she was my room-mate, so now I hear it and I am creeped out, because she actually wanted a man she could control like that. OH MAN.

So anyone who covers any part of their body is obviously mutilating themselves there?

Fear and pity the clothed ones, my naked brethren! Implore them remove their panties, and when they refuse, say it is because they cut themselves in their secret places!

*shudders*

Have just had a flashback to that film The Piano Teacher where Isabelle Huppert locks herself in a bathroom and starts cutting into her inner thigh and intimate places (ahem) with a razor blade.

I never get why people can't just love the music and get on with their lives. Nooooo they have to have a wanking contest over who's a bigger fan and what kind of fan is better and who is more emo or more goth and who isn't allowed to be a fan etc and so forth. Too many wanky self-appointed rules.

"OMG!!! If you don't know the lyrics to every single song ever written by them plus the band members' least favorite veggie and underwear size, you are not a TRU FAN!!11"

Yeah...it's because of people like that that I'll be standing waaaaaaaay in the back.

Word. And on the flip side, I'm sick of people deciding that if you like any bands in a particular genre, you automatically fall in to a stereotypical sect of people (goths, emo, etc.). Especially when they go out of their way, for no apparent reason, to remind that person how much they suck.

It's kind of like furries, actually. Okay, some of them are annoying and you decided they're all horrible people. Fine, that's great, whatever. Is it really necessary to spam every time you see one post on a community?

*phew* no idea about his underwear, though. I'm saved!

Yay, Dresden Dolls wank!

Darling Marcus sadly reminds me of the douchebag who almost ruined a Dolls show for me in November. He had enormous hair, cut in front of me in the crowd and then helped his "eighty friends" do the same. And he kept screaming "BOSTON" in the middle of songs and hitting me. *twitch* Sorry, post-traumatic 'Nam concert flashbacks. Johnny? Johnny? JOHNNNNYYYY!

So there's no possible reason that she could be wearing thigh-high stockings because they just look so damn hot when worn with little short skirts?

Because if that's why she's wearing them, then I am so totally going to be into this band now. I don't give a damn that I've never heard their music or even seen a picture of them ever. Thigh-high socks are just that sexy, yo.
