Current music:David Bowie - Rebel Rebel

A small but promising wank in a small fandom.
The Dresden Dolls are a Boston-based band who have begun to make it pretty big in the past year. Since many of their songs feature dark topics, and since they mix cabaret into their performance and style, it's not surprising that many, shall we say, melodramatic people will be drawn to their music.

However, the band also has a sharp sense of humor and irony, and this is usually also the case with the fans. But now that they are going through that awkward transition from little known local band to indie poster children, wank is beginning to crop up. And it is not, as traditional opinion dictates, from the legions of new fans.

A series of three posts to the dresdendolls lj community has definitely demonstrated that much. It's your usual sort of suspect -- an angst filled nineteen year old boy with a Marilyn Manson avatar.

His first post is slightly strange but not that big a deal. Well, there's plenty of dramatic, wanky self-pity:

I am very excited and I will be the one up front with my disposable camera clicking away. I need to do that, I never remember the happier times in my life... So, I should keep track of them with film. Wow, that was the saddest statement ever made. {dies}

He also disses new fans, which ticks some people off, as Dolls fans aren't generally territorial indie fans who don't want anyone but a handful of people to know about their favorite band.

darling_marcus: I'm just an elitist whore, truly. Ha! Yeah, the new fans just seem to be bandwagon junkies. {shrugs}

weezercrazed: Bandwagon? So if someone starts liking a band after other people do, they're just bandwagon junkies? Whatever. People like whatever music they want, who cares if they come in a few years after the band's first album.

And yes, you ARE an elitist whore. As long as you realize that.

Second post is full of pictures of himself. Not exactly on topic.

I'll be da' fat kid acting like a complete ass up front and will perhaps be the one crying while listening to "bad Habbit". Buy me a drink, being 19 is such a bitch. I'll take either a Jack&Coke or an Absolut vodka martini, very dry, no olives.

A number of fans are slightly repulsed. A couple of fellow wankers jump to Marcus's defense (and they may be friends of his for all I know, as at least one of them has a remarkably similar icon) and bitch about the community being pretentious, a bit of an ironic statement, considering.

And then comes the third post, where he tactfully suggests that the reason why lead singer Amanda Palmer regularly wears thigh high black and white striped stockings, is not, in fact because of the band's cabaret aesthetic, but is "because she is a self injurer and mostly cuts on her legs, most do inorder to avoid the ridicule of the masses day to day."

While it seems obvious that Palmer has some history with self-injury -- that song the idiot keeps blubbering over, "Bad Habit", is on the very same subject -- people are pretty disgusted by his suggestion.

darling_marcus hasn't responded yet so who knows whether more wank will ensue.
