Sentai/Power Rangers wank
A new season of Power Rangers, Power Rangers SPD, premiers in the US and someone posts to the LJ sentai comm, comparing it to Dekaranger, the Japanese sentai series on which it's based.

First, we have nitpickery wank.

Then, [info]kingranger comes in and wanks about people posting about Power Rangers, because this is a SENTAI comm, dammit!

Japanese elitism wank that doesn't involve anime!

In the original Japanese, that stood for "Special Police Dekaranger". In the US version, I think it's something like "Space Patrol Delta". I might be wrong.

Dekaranger is on speed, though. Or crystal meth.

(Though really, this is nothing new. Seems like a day doesn't go by without someone comparing the two or saying they're worried about Disney getting their hands on the new Sentai series or something.)

Ah, so true. That comm is usually pretty open to PR, though, and there have been civil discussions about the new licensing by Disney and jazz. Really surprising, since sentai fandom seems gets some hard-core elitist wankers.

My boyfriend actually recognized his name as I was reading the comments to him. Apparently he does TV-N's dubbing for the Kamen Rider series. Boyfriend has been downloading them ferociously over the past couple months, so I've inadvertantly learned about sentai. O_o

And we've just started watching Dekaranger, too. Bonus! :D

Not only is it still on, but the last season was actually pretty damn good (for what it was). At least in the beginning; I didn't see any later episodes to know if the quality fell.

Oh, I certainly don't have both parts of "The Green Candle" on tape. And if I had such a tape, I *definitely* wouldn't re-watch it regularly. No sir, not me.

Tee hee... PR Vs Sentai. During one of the anime conventions, one of my hardcore friends brought some sentai DVDs and told me that Power Rangers "OMG SUX!" compared to real sentai and I must watch and believe. After a few episodes, he left and I asked my other friend, "Can you tell me the difference between this and Power Rangers? They both have corny acting, corny dialogue, corny special effects, corny costumes, corny moves, cool music, and both are fun to watch." "Oh, one is in Japanese and has Japanese culture in it." "OMG! I have seen the error in my ways of ever liking Power Rangers! I'm such a bad person!" Of course he wasn't happy that I continued calling it "that Power Ranger show we watched".

Sentai is not localized. It is disected,changed,and made into something that is nothing more than a small shadow of the original source.

Dude. You're talking about a genre where people dress up in bright spandex and mock-fight people in creepy fursuits.

Maybe you should start breaking the little pill in half every morning.

I just have to add:

I think it's hysterical and refreshing to see someone who *would* be a BNF in any other fandom (that is, anyone involved in such large scale fansubbing projects) get called and called nastily on his suckish behavior.

Because we all know how people would be kissing KingRanger's ass if he were in, say, Harry Potter fandom.

Nice change from Cosplay Wank. :D

Aw, Power Ranger. I used to love that show as a kid. Then I discovered books and TV just wasn't worth it. (And then came the net...)

That's just amazing. Way back when I was in MIDDLE SCHOOL I hated that show so much that I watched every episode in order to hate it more. I did the same with the Brady Bunch. The logic of that escapes me now.

That was like 10 years ago. First Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and My Little Pony, now this. When are they going to bring back the Smurfs?

Need to watch more of Deka, but I'm not done with Aba yet. And argh, I still have to finish Kamen Rider Blade.

Still loving the DinoThunder ep where the characters of the DinoThunder show were watching an episode of Abaranger to see what Japan was doing with 'their' legend.

And it would be the Bucky Bonds episode they watched. When we watched the original at our place, my eyebrows raised. "They named the black baseball player visiting Japan... BUCKY?"

But the back-alley chiropractor was a cool touch. Oh yes.

Deka is my FIRST Sentai even though I get kidded by the family for faithfully religiously still watching PR through all 13 seasons.
