JKR vs. the US Army. Who has the fans?
Over on the Leaky Cauldron, it's posted that JKR's lawyers are looking at the US military's parody of HP characters in a cartoon promoting proper equipment maintenance. The US Army is quoted as saying, "Each copy of our magazine is reviewed by our legal office. After reviewing this copy they judged that we were doing nothing wrong and that these characters were in parity use."

Much wankage follows. Most engaging in a massive slugfest over JKR and the War in Iraq. (Btw, read from the bottom of the page up to get the comments in order) There are so many beautiful quotes in there that it kills me to choose a couple for this summary, but I'll go with these two representative ones.

If my favourite books are used in a comic to cheer up the soldiers in Iraq, then yes, I do have a problem with that. If Jo or her lawyers are doing something to prevent this, I´m al for it.

and

First there are a stupid kids reading this site how know nothing about war and death and what it is not to be free. For 40 million people that’s what they now have because of USA, the UK, and other nations. In addition, I think that this falls under the Fair Use Rule of the United States Copyright Act of 1976. To say nothing of the fact that you can't sue the government unless it give you permission first. JKR would be wise not to get political otherwise people will stop reading her books because of her views and that would be to bad.

Bwaahahahaaaaa! I'm now trying to imagine the religious right's reaction to the Bush administration using Harry Potter to increase military efficiency in the righteous war against the infidel. I suspect the competing reflexes will cause their brains to explode.

ARMY + HP (and by extension, the HP fandom).

What will this lead to? Slash pairings in the ARMY? No slash occurs in the ARMY!

Okay, everything else aside, this made me snicker like a lunatic:

To say nothing of the fact that you can't sue the government unless it give you permission first.

I just. How do you go about asking for permission to sue, anyway? And why would the govt. ever actually give that permission? Oi. *eyeroll*

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't parody supposed to be, um, amusing in some way? Cos that comic made me laugh about as much as imminent fiery death Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo...

What I find disturbing is that the US military uses comic strips to educate the troops. I mean, do you really want the world's most powerful country to handing out guns to people unable to read books without pictures?

Dude, in a legal battle between Jo Rowling and the US army, I'd put my money on Jo every time. She is the beloved author of probably the best-selling fantasy series of all time. The poor saps in the army, however, seem to have depleted their good will quite a few months back...

Not to mention, the US army seems to have enough trouble handling an insurgency in Iraq. How the hell could they ever deal with an insane crowd of Harry Potter fans creating havoc worldwide?

Oh, jesus. These peopel can't separate anything, can they.

Supporting the troops doesn't necessarily equal supporting the war. You can be opposed to the war, but you better goddamn respect the people who are fighting it for you. They can't help it, they aren't involved in the political process, they're just people willing to put their liveson the line and die for you. Just because our President has decided to take advantage of that and send them on a looney suicide mission to take over the Middle East doesn't mean that they had a say in it.

I hate the war, but I fucking respect anyone who is putting their life on the line out there.

Um, wow. Good luck winning a copyright battle against something that's totally legal.

Because, you know, she didn't leap on all those people doing political cartoons last time I saw. Why not? Because it's called parody. >>;;

The irony of conservatives using HP for something, however, is simply magnificent.

The picture of Half-Mast on the cover looks creepily like Mr. Weatherbee.

An aside on the use of comic-style presentation of information

The subthread in here about what this means about the literacy and intelligence of troops has gotten a bit snarled so I just wanted to bring this out here:

Sometimes, presenting information through a heavy use of illustrations rather than text *is* a better way to convey things. Look at books on home repair, knot tying-- hell, origami: there's extensive use of illustrations or photos, sometimes with little or no accompanying text.

Humor is just an attempt to make chunks of information more palatable and/or memorable.

And, just to put a frisson of wank on this: I recommend you all find and read Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe (all 3 volumes). If you feel the need to assimilate more purely textual info, he has extensive bibliographies in each volume.

Hee! This comment from Nina wins:

Awww, don't you people realize? This has nothing to do with politics or the US army or whatever war.

No. It's the fact that Snape ("Snappy") asks Harry ("Topper") a question, which he answers - and Snape replies "GOOD, Topper." (!!!!!)

If THAT is not a crude misinterpretation of the characters, I don't know what is! ;-))

Oh, much is explained! I posted an amused note on my LJ about the (London free daily) Metro article from yesterday on this, and the comments seemed to be completely off the wall and about a different thing. I had wondered wtf.

Anyone have text of the real article? Because the Leaky Cauldron version makes it sound, to me, as if the Times reporter is the real wanker by sending the stuff to the lawyers in order to poke a story out of a nonstory. And since the lawyers had to have a response, they pushed it off to Warner Brothers, who hold copyright to character names and film (thus actor) images in the US.

I can't fucking believe the American HP fans wanked so damn hard on this one. No wonder other nations hate us so much. :\

"JK Rowling won't let our troops use her characters?!? She can't do that, were THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!"

Bitch please.
