JKR vs. the US Army. Who has the fans? Over on the Leaky Cauldron, it's posted that JKR's lawyers are looking at the US military's parody of HP characters in a cartoon promoting proper equipment maintenance. The US Army is quoted as saying, "Each copy of our magazine is reviewed by our legal office. After reviewing this copy they judged that we were doing nothing wrong and that these characters were in parity use." Much wankage follows. Most engaging in a massive slugfest over JKR and the War in Iraq. (Btw, read from the bottom of the page up to get the comments in order) There are so many beautiful quotes in there that it kills me to choose a couple for this summary, but I'll go with these two representative ones. If my favourite books are used in a comic to cheer up the soldiers in Iraq, then yes, I do have a problem with that. If Jo or her lawyers are doing something to prevent this, I´m al for it. and First there are a stupid kids reading this site how know nothing about war and death and what it is not to be free. For 40 million people that’s what they now have because of USA, the UK, and other nations. In addition, I think that this falls under the Fair Use Rule of the United States Copyright Act of 1976. To say nothing of the fact that you can't sue the government unless it give you permission first. JKR would be wise not to get political otherwise people will stop reading her books because of her views and that would be to bad. NM Post a comment in response: |
