small band/huge wank
On Saturday night, the Boston-based band The Dresden Dolls played a show in Providence, RI, which got a little rough. Basically, there were a number of non-fans there, and also just a lot of drunken fans, and towards the end of their set a mosh pit broke out. As well as a girl passing out from feeling claustrophobic, one particular individual climbed onto the stage and dove into the crowd, even though nobody was paying attention to catch her. Luckily, she broke her fall ... on another girl's head. This girl had a seizure and ended up in the hopsital for five hours.

A number of people were pissed off about the (unprecedented) moshing and expressed this on dresdendolls lj community. Eventually the friend of the girl who had the seizures made a post about it, chastising the people who moshed and ignored those who were hurt, and asking for help to identify the person who injured her friend.

This was followed by a flurry of discussion, about half of the community sympathizing with her and another half basically tell her she and her friend was an idiot; there's nothing wrong with moshing; furthermore, there's nothing wrong with moshing at Dolls shows; and finally, if you don't like it, screw you, and you probably deserved to get hurt anyway. There's also one particular genius who seems to be completely enamored with the idea that it's impossible to get a seizure from a mere head injury unless one has "special needs". He's also one of those charmers who enjoys likening the totalitarian desires of people who don't want people crashing into them to a OMG! A Nazi regime!

Soon after, the person who was injured posts a thread as well.

And then that same genius boy is now deciding the whole thing was made upwhich pisses off the original girl so that she does a "I'm leaving!" post. Which is tremendously melodramatic, but everything about this wank is.

And in case you are wondering, I was at the concert and it did happen.

Oh, we've seen [info]rfjason before. Don't remember where, but he's been here before.

That said... how do you mosh to the Dresden Dolls, exactly...?

(...And the moshing was to Half Jack, of all things...)

But yeah, it's possible. The "live" aspect helps a lot. Amanda and Brian get into it when they perform, everything's loud, and so on. Naturally, the audience gets excited. I, myself, wasn't a mosher, but I did dance with some degree of abandon further back when I wasn't being mesmerized by Amanda's stripey thigh-highed legs or the "eminently lickable" sexiness of the fabulous Brian Vilgione whilst they played.

That said, I know if I hadn't been there to see the moshing myself, I would be sitting here, listening to Half Jack, and thinking "WTF?".

Moshing is the reason I don't go to general admission shows anymore. Period. Doesn't matter who the artist is, it seems these days anything with a tempo over 80 bpm is going to induce some moron into moshing.

Ah well. Good drama, that one!

Heh. For a fandom that holds "rock love" so sacred, the Dresden Dolls community is an awful wanktastic bunch. I'm not sure who's crazier: the indie elitists, who look down on anyone with any desire to move to the music, or the moshers, who are disturbingly unconcerned for the welfare of others.

... And it really amuses me how many people have somehow inferred that was Amanda angered/disgusted in regards to the moshing, which is a bit different to what she actually said (something along the lines of an amused, but concerned, "do it, if that's your thing, but for fuck's sake, please take care of one another").

Wow. I haven't heard any of their music at all, but it's my understanding that the Dresden Dolls aren't really something you mosh and crowd surf to. ::scratches head:: Although I can kind of relate...I nearly got crushed and had to be pulled out by a bouncer at a Matchbox 20 concert.

Having gotten that out of the way...jeeze. The people who have like no sympathy for the girl who had to go to the ER need help. I mean, help.

(Also, I love how this tiny band is getting all of this wank. Imagine when they're in arena shows!!)

Gonna have to join the indie elitists on this one. Moshing is so 1992 Aggro Grunge Dude. And by that I don't mean I think it's "uncool," so much as I think it's stupid and aggressive, especially at a concert like the Dresden Dolls. It's not like it's Slayer or something. I'm all for dancing, just not moshing.

Also, what's with everyone and their dog talking about the Dresden Dolls recently? Several people on my flist have, and now there's two wanks about them. They're good, but I wouldn't say they blow my mind.

I need to make an icon that says MUSIC SNOB. I seem to take the side of the indie 1337ists every single time.

Sooooo I checked all of this out. I followed the links and wondered at the sheer stoopid of [info]rfjason and his repeat wankage. And I shared this wonderment with a friend. Best part? My friend Bondage Spider made this comment about the wanker's icon:

BondageSpider: Yeah... He looks like a pony that got its wish and turned into a human so he could date the girl who wished for a pony...

Gold. Pure gold.

Better yet, this troll is a bullshit artist for a living!

The "testimonials" section is the best. I laughed so hard I horked a lung.

My opinions:
Moshing = fine and good for whoever wants to.
Someone getting hurt = bad.
Anyone who injures someone like that should at the very very least apologize, and better yet, help with medical expenses.

I got someone dropped on my head in a mosh pit once. I didn't have any seizures, but still the experience wasnot fun. I'm surprised my neck didn't get snapped, and I certainly had a hell of a headache. On the other hand, people around me helped me back to my feet and cleared the way for my to get out of the mosh pit and to the bathroom to rest, they didn't just ignore me.

And a summary of the point:
Go ahead and mosh. Just don't, y'know, hurt people.

Perhaps this is a good place to get something cleared up:
As someone who has never been to any music event more energetic than a rousing performance of Die Fledermaus, may I ask what exactly "moshing" is? I doubt I will ever find myself in a situation where a mosh pit will break out (unless the opera house REALLY relaxes the rules) but I'm very curious now. And what is the "mosh pit etiquette" everyone's talking about?

Personally, I think moshing should be banned from all concerts. I've never been injured, because I don't go near them, but really...why should people who are just as much - and in some cases more - of a fan of the band playing than the idiots moshing have to move to the side or the back to avoid being hurt, annoyed, and having alcohol thrown on them?

As far as I'm concerned, if you want to mosh, YOU go to the back and leave those of use who want to actually watch the concert the fuck alone.
