Drama wank over translations at egl
For anyone who doesn't know what egl stands for, it's "elegant gothic lolita", and the LJ community [info]egl boasts of over a thousand or so members, so it's not terribly shocking that drama bursts out every so often.

However this time, [info]tian_shi asks about translating a scan and immediately [info]usagiko responds with a rather curt comment.

...which leads to more serious wank than usual, including friends hopping in and random people just commenting on random stuff.

Not sure if it's ended, because no moderators seem to be on, but someone finally translated the scan which ironically, is an article about manners.

...what's an elegant goth lolita, anyway?

All I can think of is Dominique Swain with black makeup crossing her ankles daintily, and I doubt that's it.

It's actually describing a certain sort of lolita who wears a certain type of clothing. If someone is egl, they are wearing a brand made by Mana who used to be from the Japanese band Malice Mizer but is now in charge of a different band and that's whole 'nother barrel of monkeys.

Here's an article:

I feel bad for the original poster; she can only read the Kanji because she's Chinese, she can't exactly know how to pronounce them or the context they're in Japanese. If she's not a repeat offender, I don't understand why she should get off her ass and "learn some Japanese." if its for one silly article.

Japanese isn't exactly something you can go to sleep and learn the next day. Even though I'm learning, I prefer to wait for other people to translate articles because misinterpreting brings heavy criticism as well.

She keeps apologizing and they still go at it. Gooo EGL comm.

Exactly. Japanese and Chinese may share a similar writing system in kanji, but the meanings are different on occasion (like a pairing meaning "ally" in Japanese means "ingredients" in Chinese, or my own personal favorite: what is "letter" in Japanese means "toliet paper" in Chinese).

Not to mention that grammar is completely different, and just getting the gist from what are the equivalent of cognates is not the same as actually understanding what is going on. Japanese is a language that is heavily context and culture based, and I've looked at pages and pages of content and been confused because I thought it was referring to something different.

Usagiko is really just being a bitch on behalf of some other people, and while it wasn't exactly the best wording in a request, it still wasn't demanding anything from anyone. Not that that scan is all that clear towards the end.

I feel bad for her, too - they're accusing her of "begging" for a translation. It wasn't like she was all "OMG PRETTIE PLZ TRANSYLTE THIS 4 MEEEEEEEE!!111"

That Usagiko chick is a royal twat AND she's not even one of these supposedly "pressured" translators. She started the wank train rolling, and she's keeping it going and going.

Oh please. Anyone who gets up in arms about someone asking politely for translation help, especially when they aren't a translator, needs to calm down before their self-righteousness proves fatal. I hate it when people get offended on someone else's behalf. Being a translator myself, I didn't have any issue with that request, though it was worded poorly.

Plus, being able to "decipher" the kanji means nothing when you don't know the grammar. You can in theory know all the vocabulary on that scan and still not really understand what they are getting at. Japanese can be nasty like that, and coming from a Chinese language background only helps you as you have a general idea of what the kanji mean and pairs are often different.

The formal speech they're teaching in the scan makes me sad. I thought the McDonald's ladies were bad, but they don't have anything on these lolita girls, if they really do talk like this.

You're interested in gothic lotita, but not in the Japanese language?

Isn't that like being interested in sari and henna but not Indian culture as fart as it concerns the language?

Don't you realize how much of an affect a culture has on a language?

Or, if nothing else, how your own culture has an affect on translations of one language to yours?

Overlooking the comical misspelling of 'far', GEEZ man! That's like expecting fans of Italian cooking to learn Italian!

What is *with* these people who're convinced that to appreciate a single aspect of another culture, you have to learn the entire language?

I hate to sound mean, but if you didn't want to give a translation, why bother replying with all the "Christ!" and "JESUS!" responses? I think that was uncalled for and higly immature. You don't need to take your frustration out on the community or other people's religions, this is what personal journals are for, right?
