Open Scrolls Archive Vs. The Haters
It all starts when GAFF sporks a LOTR Sue from Fanfiction.net. The author is probably underage, so I'll leave that alone.

The real fun begins when someone from another archive, Open Scrolls (www.scribeoz.com), crashes the party. DevilsAdvocate (aka Scribe) is upset because people have linked Open Scrolls stories on GAFF. This has nothing to do with the original sporking, mind you. Now if you click on a link to Open Scrolls from Deleterius or GAFF (and probably here, although I haven't tried it yet) you'll get this notice of banning:

You are receiving this message as you have been identified as possibly engaging in the act of unfairly criticising an author and are thus banned from reading stories on this site. This ban will remain for a period of seven days - repeat offenders will be banned permanently.

To raise critical appraisal of stories on this site, please use the review system or the forum. The disection and dismantling of authors in a critical and non-helpful manner is not appreciated.

If you feel that you are receiving this message in error, please notify us on support@scribeoz.com and we will investigate. If you are an AOL user, however, the ban will likely remain due the the way AOL accesses the internet and there is not a lot we can do about it!

The following message is posted on Open Scrolls. And we get a mention!

Please note for future reference, that anyone wishing to link to stories, not their own, on Open Scrolls will need to get approval from the Admins first. I am aware that there’s no rule that requires you do this, however, we are appealing to your sense of courtesy and fair play. Recently developments on GAFF (God Awful Fan Fiction) have provoked us to make this request when several of our authors were sporked there.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion and in the spirit of free speech we can’t stop negative things being said about the stories, we can ensure that the sporkers at GAFF do not find fodder for their site, directly from Open Scrolls’ pages. If it’s a matter of them having something to say about a story, that’s their right. Free speech is a double-edged sword. However, we at OSA have a problem when they post links to these pages so that members of their spork thread can come here and have a prod as well. Coming here specifically looking for targets to use for their brand of ‘fun’ will not be tolerated and anyone who links us there, will do so at their own risk.

Of course policing this is difficult and we have taken some steps to prevent this but no system is fool proof. Therefore, please note if you are on GAFF, Deleterius, Fandom_Wank or other similar spork/wank sites as well as a member of Open Scrolls and that you're using links there pointing back to this archive, beware. We are watching and there will be consequences. Some of you will already know to what I am referring.

They see you when you're sleeping. They know when you post wank. They know if you've been bad or good, so put your sporks away! Or else, no more het LOTR fanfic for you. What a shame!

EDIT: According to our brave test clickers, only a direct link to a story will get you banned. If you would like to try this for yourself, go here: Ban Me Harder!

If someone doesn't want people to pass comment on their work, they should keep their work in a notebook that they don't show anyone, and not posted out on their journal or public archive where they are giving tacit permission to have their work read and by extension judged by any Tom, Dick, and Harry that passes through. Because Tom and Harry may be lovely gentlemen, but Dick is one, and he's got an opinion too.

I have to admit that it's an interesting trick to ban people who mock your/your clients work. Foam pad the world, or something like that.. *amused*

Has every fandom gone crazy with "Don't like it, don't read it! But comment positively on my work anyway!" lately?

Yes, yes, not every fanfic writer is writing because he or she really likes writing for its own sake, but you know what? Most of them don't advertise that they aren't in flaming neon letters ten feet high, either. If I mock a story I find badly-written away from the author's page, or offer concrit because I think the author really might want it to improve, how am I being an asshole, while people who leave gushing reviews with no advice aren't?

Oh, yes, I forgot. Fandom is supposed to be a happy fun jolly place where everyone compliments each other and smiles and smiles and never realizes that the real party is beeing gleeful about good writers and bad writers both, just in different ways.

What? Because being permanently banned from their archive is the worst thing ever (tm)? That is most likely all they can do easily in the realms of legality. I severely doubt there was any life ruining here. No one was stalked, just a few feelings get hurt, and sometimes, they need to be.

GAFF and Deleterius are by nature rather cruel, but I'm of the school where people need to just suck it up and learn that not everyone is full of sunshine and roses and also learn that maybe their writing sucks.

That, and their security sucks. All anyone has to do is type the address in by hand, or leave it as text in an entry to be cut and pasted into an address bar.

I am confused.

All stories of any rating are accepted, provided they are clearly labelled.

This archive is non-slash.

So.....it isn't a case of "all stories of any rating are accepted", correct?

And...well, maybe it's just me, but I've always found it to be true that there's a direct correlation to the quality of an archive with the amount of "ewwwww" coming from reviewers, right?

Oh GNOS! I can't read anymore terrible LotR fanfiction from that website! Le wah!

Oh wait...I've never been to, seen or heard of that website. Actually, I don't know anything about LotR in the first place. Oh well.
*goes back to trying to fly Link to the lens flare sun using a wide variety of cheats in Wind Waker (I don't think it's possible- he's been in space for nearly twenty minutes; I gave up, and as of writing this, he's still falling back to earth)*

Okay, but seriously...I just love how the site admin just threw a shitfit on a thread that had nothing to do with the site. Then they discourage outside criticism? With virtually no quality control to the submissions in the first place? Do they WANT every piece of fanfiction ever written to be a piece of crap?

Kewl Writer: Hi, my name is roseblackfreewillysiluriansunbeam696969666- I repeatedly mashed the keyboard with my fist, lit the computer on fire, fed it to a pack of badgers and saved the results to a .txt file.

Admin of Way Cool Fanfiction Website: Is there slash?

Kewl Writer: No.

Admin of Way Cool Fanfiction Website: You're IN!

Wow, a website like that would be just a pleasantly festering pit of rotten offal, wouldn't it?

Oh. My. God....This is a wank of beauty! It's like the Perfect Wank of concrit. And even Fandom_Wank -- which isn't actually devoted to critiquing fic -- gets banned. It makes me feel yummy. I think I'll just b...ba...ban all of them right b..ba...[bursts out laughing] Sorry, I can't even say it with a straight face.

I'd like to submit a little fanfic I wrote in honor of the Open (irony! beautiful delicious irony!) Scrolls...

On the Eighth Day, God Wanked
or
The Real Reason Adam and Eve Were Kicked Out of the Garden

All was not well in the Garden. Adam was having the damnedest time naming the animals, and Eve was dealing with the newly-coined word 'boner' and wondering if there was a connection to her and, if so, whether she should be insulted. She did not, after all, have any control over how she was created.

God, meanwhile, was feeling a little insecure about His creations, so He decided to stop by Adam's place for some feedback. Adam listened attentively as God outlined how great He and His creations were. Finally, God finished and waited for Adam's praises.

"O God," Adam said, "I don't mean any disrespect. Thou arteth Great and Mighty-eth and shit. But, I gotta say, Eve....? Is totally a Mary Sue. I mean, seriously, any hooters that big shouldn't be able to ignore gravity *completely*. And how come her fig leaf seems to always stay in place no matter what she does? And it never needs replacing. Mine gets fucking brown after only a few days."

"Thou art impertinent," God replied, angrily. A slight sliver of blue lightning hissed through the air, permanently curling Adam's short-n-straights.

Adam stepped back nervously, but continued, undeterred. "Most importantly, that Eve person has slept with every damned male in the Garden. If that's not a classic sign of a Mary Sue, I don't know what is!"

"But you're the only male in the Garden!"

"Yes, and she's slept with me. Several times. What a slut."

God shot down another blue bolt, this one somewhat stronger. It blasted a large area nearby.

Adam glanced at the now-scorched section of the Garden. "Mmm...flashfried blue-eyed unicorns. I could just...eat them up."

God growled and stomped off in search of Eve. Perhaps she would be more tractable.

"Eve." God's voice seemed to be aiming for soft and loving tones, but this was somewhat undercut by the fact that it boomed across the entire earth. "Wake up, Eve."

Eve slowly struggled out of sleep. Glancing up, she blinked at the swirling God-clouds. "God? What's going on?"

"Eve...I need you to speak with Adam. He has been criticizing Me of late. Quite unfairly, I might add."

Eve sighed. "You know, I never really thought much of that Adam creature anyway. He gets weepy for no apparent reason and keeps talking like an idiot. 'o eve, let me giv u sume throbing love becuz u r teh bomb.' I don't even know what 'teh' means! And --" her voice lowered to a horrified whisper "--I think he might be gay..."

"We'll talk about that later," God replied. "First, I want you to name all the animals. You wouldn't *believe* some of the things Adam was naming them. 'Long-necked Spotted Fucker. ' 'Weird Animal with Fur and a Goddamned Beak, For Pete's Sake.' 'Annoyin Useless Biting Insects....'

Eve blushed ever-so-slightly. "Well...I named some of them myself. I mean, You have to admit, Original Character development isn't Your strong suit. Seriously, who would come up with the idea of a dog the size of a rat with the personality of a rabid killer yam? And since when is it acceptable to pair off horses and donkeys to create some sterile jackass of a character?"

God rumbled ominously. "How dare you criticize My work? You don't know how *hard* it was! Plus, my beta has been stuck in hell and so --"

"You mean the Serpent?" Eve interrupted cheerfully. "I just say him yesterday. He gave me some fruit he created...."

"What?!? He didn't create that fruit! I did. He just copied Me! Goddamned plagiarist!"

"Bit late for 'goddamned,' I'd say."

-- continued --

And if the fangirls on her site can't take con-crit, then that should be their problem. Why is this Scribe person even bothering. Maybe GAFF should find some of her stuff and spork it.

Or maybe they already did.

Wow. This is cool. I've never been banned from any place before. Well, except for a few bars during my college years, but as I only have hazy memories of those times, they're best not commented upon.

Who knew that right mouse button was so heinous?

You are receiving this message as you have been identified as possibly engaging in the act of unfairly criticising an author and are thus banned from reading stories on this site.

Oh noes! I have been possibly critical and MEEEEN! Now I am banned and....eh, whatever. I wonder, how do they know you've been 'unfairly' critical? Are there sites that get to be fairly critical, while fandom_wank, GAFF, etc. are just big meanie poopie heads? I think I'll just let the icon speak for me.

I dunno. A lot of people on Open Scrolls are hardcore canon purists (or at least were, last time I went there). I don't think Scribe doesn't want people criticizing a person's work--I think she figured: "Hey, if I make it harder for people to mock it for their own entertainment rather than criticizing it in a review where the author can see and improve, then I will."

Because c'mon, how many people just point and mock before actually trying to give the author a heads up and telling them what to do to fix it?

Not saying it isn't entirely wanky, but I can certainly understand her reasoning.

It's that "I am posting this for people to read it but only comment if you like it or I ban you!" mentality. The fandoms are bursting at the seams with it recently.
