mmm, HP genderswitch wank
I tried to resist, I really did. But it just amuses me...

So apparently there's been a bunch of genderswitch things going on over at lj's RemusxSirius community. (Full disclosure: I vaguely follow the community, but don't belong to it)

perrynqa gets a bit sick of it all. OMG, Remus and Sirius are BOYS! Not girls! End the genderswitch!

Many people agree. Others debate the idea of "acceptable twisting of canon".

Mod shows up, is helpful, and declines to turn the OP over to us. Good mod!

I actually kind of agree with the OP.
You know what would be interesting and original, though? FTM!Sirius&Remus. That would be different.

There was actually a FTM!Obi-Wan/Qui story a few months ago. I thought it was quite good, though there were several times where it read sort of textbooky.

I agree with the OP as well. The ones wanking are missing the point. If you can write good genderswitch and still keep them in character, then I tip my hat to you. However, I've read HORRIBLE genderswitch one of them written by someone in this wank..

*snerk*

Yeah the ones wanking really are missing the entire point. The OP wasn't about not writing genderswitch or banning it, it was about writing good stuff that was actual genderswitch, not stuff about these Renee and Sarah people. (Although I want to tip my hat to the genius that came up with those names *eyeroll*.)

Renee and Sarah

WORD. It's a huge reason why I don't like it. You don't hear names like Sirius and Lupin every day, couldn't they have been a BIT MORE ORIGINAL than Renee and Sarah? That's the name of my friends two cats and one of the cats is cross-eyed. :\

GASP! Someone dares to say that fanfic writers should not bastardise original fiction any way they want to! The BASTARD.

I'm sorry, but unless you're going to write according the rules and canon already outlined, go write your own original fiction or STFU.

Follow canon? But, but, but according to canon, Remus and Sirius aren't cute and innocent bishi (or however you spell that...) who have mad gay sex all day long and have pink wallpaper in their trendy apartment! And Remus is well balanced and not a bulimic cutter!

Bitter? Me?
God, I need a "You! Outta my 'ship, ya dolt!" icon.

[info]cathowl

Alright, I agree that people shouldn't just tromp merrily over the canon in heavy hiking boots, stomping it to oblivion... But does no one have any respect for AUs that are well thought-out and written?

Drama:
Must AU writers forever be a persecuted breed? Forced to hide in the depths of our Geocities and Angelfire pages only to come out and splooge on ff.net once and again? When will the hating stop?!
End drama.

Ok, that over with... Seriously, I write original fiction (which may or may not ever see the web) and AU fanfiction.

Maybe the problem doesn't truly lie in changing the characters or other aspects of the canon, but in changing them in a way that makes them not them any longer?

(I'd write more, but I fear I'll end up drowning myself in splooge if I go on too long, and besides, my brain is shutting down from sleep deprivation.)

mini hp fandom rant
[info]marlo
2005-02-14 07:40 pm UTC (link)
Meh, genderswitching is the latest trend in the HP fandom. I don't know what it is about that fandom in particular, or if it's just my exposure to it or what -- but the Harry Potter fandom seems much more self-aware of itself as a fandom than anything else I've seen. Its BNFs are the Biggest and Craziest, its trends and memes spread like wildfire, and it just seems to know the inner workings of fandom. It's good in some ways because everything is so organized and centralized, so you can find out what's going on pretty easily. But of course it's bad in other ways, because the trends get old and silly so quickly and you just wish people would shut up about them.

In summary: HP brings all the wank to the yard.

Well, it's not a recent trend, at least in Internet time. I think the fact that Pornish Pixies had a gender-oriented challenge played into the recent wave, but Andropotterist (currently going through a slump that's completely my fault) has been around for nearly a year now. The problem with any kink, be it bondage or rimming or frottage or crossdressing is that there are always people for whom it's not a kink and then everyone growls at each other for not writing the fic they want to read.

Personally, my gender-messing fic preferences don't involve boys being girls, but if someone's happy with that, then pfft. What do I care? It doesn't hurt me not to read. I do feel that I'm possibly in the minority with that, though, and it likely has something to do with your summary. Heh.

Currently the genficcers are plotting a revolt*. There are occasional visible bursts of crazy, but for the most part we hang around dank and forgotten LiveJournals in frilly shirts and sashes and suchlike and mutter darkly about how the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation the craziest Harry/Draco (who like Malfoy because he's evil and evil is kewlies and he's so teh pretteh) shippers will be first against the wall when the revolution comes. Followed by people who use the phrase 'pumpkin pie'.

We're wanky in a quiet sory of way, at least. Although this generally has less in the way of amusement for outsiders.

* Insert obvious joke here.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I've seen plenty of femslash in HP fandom these fans would drool all over. AND the fics are even hidden behind clever m/m disguises. You can almost believe you're reading slash!

Now *that's* clever.
