They don't mince their words over at somethingawful.com.
Whoever knew Harry Potter slash could be so upsetting?

The general gist of the story is that Something Awful poster Funny makes a post about his girlfriend, who he discovers is fond of Harry Potter slash. Admittedly, one of the links he discovers apparently features a poorly-written Marcus/Percy non-con. The snippet he posts of this appears to have half the forum convinced that all Harry Potter slash features rape.

Now, I'm all for letting girls have their jollies, but this is waaay over the line.

WTF is that line? Because there is a kink/porn line THAT MUST NOT BE CROSSED or you'll be taken away by the Patriot Act or the FCC or something? It hurts enough that they think slash = rape of eleven year olds, but the fact that as a female (were I a slasher) I'm not allowed to enjoy anything that they don't like just makes me want to break something.

It is harmless, honest. Well, unless you count all the wanking in the fandom itself. The only real people involved are the slashers themselves. No AIDS. No complaints of "objectification of teh gay people" starring in the porn. It's all made up fiction. It's not like he found her stash of gay kiddie porn movies.

What is all this "it's not NORMAL OMGWTFBBQ" they are wanking about? "How dare she have a fetish that isn't missionary position and giving blow jobs" is what I'm getting here. What is so threatening about a little slash? Is she going to morph into a gay man and leave you?

SA has never been known for being slash-friendly. I used to run an archive of Star Wars prequel slash, and it ended up as the Awful Link of the Day on SA, which not only led to literally thousands of people spamming my guestbook and adding my e-mail address to animal porn mailing lists, but also prompted a lovely C&D letter from Lucasfilms, since my site showed up on their radar.

So yeah, I'm not really shocked to see them being all stupid about slash again.

What's REALLY amusing that everyone is arguing over whether THIS is appropriate porn or THAT is "going over the line," but no one questions about whether porn itself is unhealthy.

Though an entirely different wank, porn=good/bad is more to the point than which porn flavor is most delicious and which flavor most vile.

I only read as far as page five because all the comments were starting to sound the same: OMGRUN!! or SO WHAT? Maybe the yummy splooge flew in later pages. Or maybe if one subscribes to SA, the high value placed on porn is a given.

See, the boy-who-brings-me-chocolate-and-graphic-novels-when-I'm-grumpy *adores* the Harry Potter slash I've written, especially the really dark twisted teacher/student bloodplay one. He nags me to write more, and gives the link to girls he dates and asks them what they think of it.

This unnerves me *way* more than a freak-out ever would. I was kinda hoping it would scare him off, as sweet as he is.

A lot of the first slash fanfiction was based on Japanese anime/manga/video games/what have you, as same-sex porn and fanwork is widely accepted there. That's why much of the terminology regarding slash has Japanese roots.

What gets me are the comments of 'your girlfriend reads homo porn with underage kids!" remarks. Last time I looked those two characters were, in fact, adults. Percy was what, 18 years old in SS? Slash based on a Young Adult series !=kiddie porn. Mind, I haven't read the fic because I'm not interested Potter and have no desire to read slash, let alone badly written slash.

I think some of those guys just can't deal with the fact that their girlfriend might be fantasizing about other men, let alone two men having sex. Because God Forbid a woman has a shred of sexuality that is seperate from her bf's.
