NC-17 gets you a C&D
[info]likebunnies gets a C&D letter from the MPAA due to her use of "NC-17" as ratings for fanfic.

[info]heidi8 debates the issue and points out that MPAA doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.

New ratings systems are proposed.

Someone on [info]likebunnies's LJ points out that it may be a prank.

I'll refrain from judgement on this except to say there's something slightly suspicious about it all, especially if no-fucking-one else gets such a letter. Given that she claims it was as delayed as it was, it seems likely that other people would already be looking at their own C & D orders if ones were sent.

But we do know one thing for certain: much of fandom has this insatiable need to be "omg urpressed by teh bastards!"

If there are two things I've learned from F_W, they're that:

1) the persecution complexes of a large segment of the fangirls and boys runs deeper and mightier than the Amazon River, and are more predictable than the collective plots of all the movies Jerry Bruckheimer made in the 80's and 90's put together;

and

2) no matter how hard we try to oppress them, it's never enough.

Was there at one time two other rating letters besides G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 and the old X? I could swear I remember seeing them on a trailer on some movies on FMC or TCM, and wondering what the hell they were.

I lurk...and now I comment....

Does it strike anyone else as odd that only NC-17 is being targeted? I would think the MPAA would have trademarked all its precious designations, not just big bad NC-17.

I'm certainly not changing anything any time soon.

Likebunnies! God, I didn't know that J. had an LJ. That takes me back.

In kind of an unpleasant way.

Anyhoo, if this is real, it's retarded. The MPAA's new boss must be flexing his... flaccid muscles.

FWIW, I'm a minion in this industry, and in-house lawyers frequently have nothing better to do than send out C&D letters. Once some poor lady sent us a cookie basket that involved her rendition of our Rather Famous Logo, and the lawyer happened to be walking by and just lost. his. shit. And then the poor lady called, crying, and, man.

Entertainment lawyers tend to be kind of tightly wound.

I saw this on my flist a few times but I'm still WTF-ing. Talk about catching slashers with a butterfly net...

What I want to know is how they honestly think they are going to stop the "illegal" use of NC-17. Wouldn't that be a little like McDonalds trying to prevent everyone in the world from using the phrase 'happy meal' in text without written permission? Yes, it's technically copyrighted, but it's so engrained in the culture that it would be hard to honestly prove they were being harmed, or to actually enforce that in court.

Or is it just the idea that by equating NC-17 with porn in fandom, we are sullying it's good name and insinuating that the MPAA has approved our Remus/Sirius/harp seal non-con S&M songfic? Hmm. Maybe we should all start referring to penises as "Happy Meals" from now on just to see what happens...

I'm partial to Wikdsushi's "Pudge" Rating System myself...

Hee hee hee, the Pudge System.

Pudge in Sport Coat: Kissing, some hugging, generally safe for the whole family.

Pudge in Medieval Garb: Mild swearing, the odd, slight innuendo. Not for very young children or the painfully innocent.

Pudge in Tight T-Shirt: Heavier language, references to sex, some violence. Intended for a teenage audience or older.

Pudge with Bulge (Jeans): Fade-to-black or very mild sex scenes, mild to moderate violence. Not for children.

Pudge with Bulge (Swimwear): Graphic, if vanilla, sex scenes. Swearing. Violence, though not torture and not in the extreme.

NAKED PUDGE!: BDSM, whips, chains, kinky sex, torture, violence, water sports, incest, you name it. Not intended for those below the age of Dead.

Remember the wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl halftime last year?

Doesn't bother me nearly so much as the way she handled it.

On TWW Yahoogroups she runs she seemed to imply that OMG! Someone turned her into the MPAA and OMG! People are </i>clearly</i> trying to drum her out of the fandom. So she picked up her toys and stomped out of the fandom, but not so quickly that she couldn't stick around and see what people said about her and the OMG!Threatening Letter on the same group.

Self important much??
