Episode IV: A New Hope (Or "Well, someone's a cunt.")
By popular demand: hot, juicy Smallville wank.

Wednesday night's episode featured a Kryptonite-enhanced canine named Krypto. Or Clarkey. Or Shelby. That doesn't matter. What matters is that said dog only growled at three things: the bad guys, another Kryptonite-infected pooch, and Lex Luthor. Naturally, this got some Lex fans in an uproar, including aelora.

(She locked the original post "because things are getting a little out of hand with it and the comments herein. One thing this fandom doesn't need is more kerfluffles over a show we're all attached to." C'mon! I live for kerfluffles! However, someone was kind enough to cap the thread pre-locking. Links to the entire thread can be found at the bottom of this post.)

Nutshell: Showing the dog growling at Lex as evidence of his current or future evilness is either sloppy writing or completely fine. Discuss.

aelora says "Goodbye, Smallville. And fuck you very much." in her LiveJournal. kryptonsite steps in to play devil's advocate.

And I don't understand why the hint that Lex is evil is so bothersome when the story has ALWAYS been that Lex is the bad guy. Do you really expect them to change it just because Michael Rosenbaum does a great performance? Him being evil is inevitable. Smallville has taught us that circumstances have made Lex the way he is, but he's not a bad guy at heart. But maybe his experiences do make him a bad guy. The problem is, we're being told it and not seeing it really. Kind of like Clark lies and this and that and yet he's supposed to be "good."
Maybe it was a failing of the show to make us like Lex Luthor TOO much, but if you were watching expecting a series where Lex Luthor never becomes the bad guy, maybe you'd be better off not watching the series to begin with, because the writing's been on the wall that "Lex will be bad" since the series pilot. Even Michael Rosenbaum wants that for the final year of his character. Villains are interesting and fun.
kryptonsite wants to know what aelora thinks. In fact, he says, "This is your forum, I'd be curious. I do respect your opinion and I hope you don't hate me for my response because I do consider you a friend. And anyone else reading, too, is welcome to tear into me, because I could be wrong with my response here."

Maybe he shouldn't have offered. j_keller is more than happy to oblige.
Who are you to lecture her like she's some kind of child? Maybe you're happy sucking down the "story" as it has been so shoddily presented this year, but that doesn't make you the queen of all that is right of Smallville. Here's something for you to pound through your network-shill head: telling us that Lex is EEEEEEEEEEEVIL and showing us Lex doing evil are two vastly different things, and TPTB have utterly failed to show Lex doing anything particularly evil this year.... And if you can't get that, then I can't help you. I dunno what you're doing up in here trying to school Aelora about it anyway, since YOU ALREADY KNEW WE WERE GOING TO BITCH ABOUT THIS IF IT HAPPENED since you COMMENTED ON WHAT WE HAD TO SAY ABOUT IT THIS MORNING IN SOMEONE ELSE'S JOURNAL! Go pimp your rose-colored vision of Smallville somewhere else, Craig, 'cause we ain't buying tonight.
Craig's response to this unknown person is succinct. "Well, someone's a cunt."

Also, he wants to know "Who are you to tell me what I say or think of Aelora?" Somewhere between j_keller's
"you do too know me" and "we're even," j_keller reveals that she once wrote reviews for Kryptonsite. First she was rosenho, then lexcorp_hope, then just Hope. (Here at F_W she was [info]luthor_hope.) She "left fandom" several months ago, but apparently she still writes reviews for a rival website and has an LJ with the j_keller moniker.

Kryptonsite admits he might not have attacked so vehemently had he know it was her. He apologizes for using the c-word, but he doesn't appreciate the way rosenho-lexcorp_hope-Hope-j_keller is talking to him. Indeed, aelora doesn't like kryptonsite's tone, but after he says he's sorry, the two seem to part ways on good terms. Which, you know, could have been done without the rest of this.

Elsewhere, stone_princess wishes the Smallvile fandom could just get along, so scribblinlenore suggests everyone concentrate on "the hot man-on-man sex" instead. Several people happily agree. (As do I. Pretty!)

Perhaps the wankiest part of this whole thing is how angry some of the SV fen are that Hope said she was stepping away from fandom when, in reality, she didn't. There's a sense of betrayal and entitlement that is kind of baffling. Links to any of that would be appreciated. Although I think [info]ingrid_m sums it up pretty darn well:
"Don't announce you're leaving fandom. Ever. Just fucking leave, drama whore, even though we know you won't because you can't live with us and damned if you can live without us. Don't let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya!"

I think that's because there was *much* public wailing and gnashing of teeth in the SV fandom when it happened. It was if she'd died (really, it was that sploogy) and she did nothing to quash the mourning, not even by saying "Well, I'm just going lower profile actually, so please, stop freaking out, okay?"

Not only that, I distinctly remember some nasty chiding at those of us Negative Nellies who "forced" Happy Hope and Happy Minion to "leave" the fandom. WOES! How could we have been so meeeeeeeeeean to poor Smallville and made them so saaaaaaaaad just because we are such whiny critics of such a lovely show?

Uh, yeah. SV's always sucked. Hard. If it ever turned good, *I'd* leave fandom because I'd drop dead of shock.

Now, not only have they NOT "left fandom", they are just as negative about the show as any of us. Holy Double Whammy, Batman!

I was very surprised that [info]j_keller in that thread turned out to be Hope. Seems that she's grown a nasty streak in her time away or maybe she just got sick of being "The Voice of Reason" in fandom as she was touted for many years.

Or maybe getting away from that appellation was the idea all along.

*shrug* Who knows? Who cares? Fandom history taught me long ago not to believe *anyone* who announces their "retirement" from fandom. Fandom is just like a sport and every retiree comes back at least once.

So, yeah, people are pissed. They feel duped. I'm not pissed. Because I never paid much attention to the situation to begin with.

I'm oblivious like that. ;) *proud*

Except I did, Ingrid. I told people I would still be writing reviews for Smallville News. I told people I would still be maintaining Wild Coyote. I told people I was not disappearing completely, I just wasn't going to maintain The Confessional anymore; I was done with that, and I am. And I told people repeatedly that they were free to e-mail me because my e-mail address wouldn't change. Other people's behavior is not my responsibility.

I don't care about the rest of this nonsense because I behaved badly, he behaved badly, but it was just a stupid slapfight, but I do care about this, because it's not true.

And yeah, I had some seriously out of control anger management issues at one time. And if I remember correctly, it was around that time that we actually met in person and had lunch (with your significant other in attendance), and I came away thinking you were pretty nice.

Wait - because she didn't tell you that she was keeping a *personal* journal that was, quite frankly, NONE of yours or mine or anybody's fucking business you're going to get on your high horse and tell her she's not to be trusted???? She said she was 'stepping back' not disappearing completely. So since she said she was stepping back it's not ok for her to make an occassional comment. It's not ok for her to have an opinion and express it. But it is ok for a whole bunch of people to go 'you said you were leaving but you stayed and didn't invite me to play at your new home! you fucking cunt, coward bitch!' uh, yeah. That makes sense. Like I said before - grow the fuck up. Because that's really what this is all about. Some of us didn't get invited to play and so you think she shouldn't have invited anyone, never made another comment, never shown her face again. No, it's true; it's obvious that BOTH their "[non]departures" from fandom was intended to be passive-aggressively punitive to the rest of us. Regardless, I think that is the distinction between the way they left and the way other people (myself included) have taken sabbatticals from the whole scene. She was all "I'm leaving LJ fandom because I can't take how MEAN you all are! YOUR FAULT! YOUUUUUUU!" It was a very see what you made me do!!1!1 kind of thing.

I don't think it's a "streak."

I don't think Craig was being wanky in his response to Aelora, and vice versa. Though they obviously disagreed, they were being very civil to each other until "Hope" showed up. Quelle surprise.

I distinctly remember one of our favorite wankers pointing the finger of doom at all of us who forced them into sooper sekrit sockpuppet LJs fandom retirement with our pissy complaints about SV last year.

You know, that cruel stuff about characterization, plot, continuity, logic, sensible dialogue ... the sort of things that don't exist this year either and frankly, never did. I think most of it was laid on the CLex 'shippers doorstep because everyone knows the unreasonably high standards we hold over SV's poor ickle head.

The sad thing is, the only people "punished" were people who seemed to really, *really* like them and usually agreed with them on most issues.
