It's a slow day...

This wank is a couple days old now. But one of those annualmonthlyweeklydailyoh, hell. *checks watch* Someone is probably having this argument about slash every minute of every day somewhere in the world of fandom.

Over on the Sages of Chaos community on LJ Victor Von Doom makes one of those "Oh noes, there's the slash on the intarwebs! Burn the witches, for they are heretics!" posts into the comm, which is promptly deleted. He then goes back to his journal and announces he's leaving. But no need to start a flame war people, sheesh.

If a fake troll trolls from under a fake bridge, is it a troll or just clever performance art? Do we care? Apparently yes, yes we do.

The post in question was a little rant about the strange new fad of writing fan-fiction of a sexually explicit nature.

New fad?

Doom doesn't get out much, does he?

Must be all the practice he has to have in referring to himself in the third person.

*cries* Someone tell the player Doom's speech is more than third person ranting please. Oh please, Twisted Toyfare Doom sounded more in character when he admitted to H.E.R.B.I.E. that he had his Doombots service him. Not that I didn't figure it already in canon

... Y'all realize that [info]sages_of_chaos is a multi-fandom crossover RPG and all the characters - including the ones "wanked" in this post - are RP characters playing a game in character?

Like, [info]doomworld speaks in the third person because it's someone pretending to be Dr. Doom from Marvel Comics. That [info]subtle_guns person?... is the Punisher.

This isn't a real wank. It's all meant in a completely facetious, in-character storyline.

Ergh. Not terribly impressed with Doom. Or Indigo. I can understand not liking a genre of fanfic. Hell, I'm not a huge fan of slash myself. I can even understand not getting in any way whatsoever why other people like that genre--um, mpreg, and wingfic, and high-school AU, the hell? Seriously?--but ultimately, whatever. When you bring in the OMG YOU ARE VIOLATING THE CHARACTERS HAVE SOME RESPECT! argument, you lose. You really do. Especially when you apply it to sexuality.


Because sure, a fic can be OOC. And that generally makes for bad writing. But, first of all, people are more than their sexuality. A lot more. Saying that an author should account for previously-expressed tendencies toward another gender if the fic's not pure PWP is totally valid. Saying that being gay at all ever regardless of context makes a character OOC is going back to sexuality-as-identity, and then I get irked.


Second, goddammit, *fanfic doesn't do shit to the original characters*. Seriously. Read Harry/Draco slash. Then read GoF. Has a hot hot sex scene between Harry and Draco miraculously appeared? No. No, it hasn't. So shut the fuck up. God.

I'm always amused by the, "Slashers run in here flaming away and taking themselves SO SERIOUSLY, what's their PROBLEM," argument, especially after someone's already mentioned that slash is "character rape."
