Episode V: The Anonymice Strike Back SV fandom is addicted to drama and wank. It's the best way to quench the hunger that SV leaves every Wednesday. It's the best way to break up friendships and the best way to bring people together who never would speak otherwise. People get into arguments and let them boil until the kitchen gets too hot. Then they cut anyone involved out of their lives. . .Er, yeah. That told us? Infinityhope friended 40 or so people, apparently at random. True, some of them are still involved in SV to varying degrees, but several of them haven't watched the show in years, let alone participated in fandom. The people included have varying reactions. Shaggirl vents "YOU MAKE THE INTERNET SUCK." Shannenb is confused because she's not even in SV fandom anymore. Suzycat doesn't "give a flying fuck." Elrond50 offers up a hearty helping of Bitch PLEASE. I am not responsible to you for what I post here. I openly mock stupidity be it fannish or other. I don't give a crap about your call for Peace and harmony in fandom. FYI - I'm not *IN* fandom much. LJ is what you make of it and I tend to mock 'Guardians of Morality or Decorum' because they are limiting by definition. This is MY playground and how I interact with my Friends is up to me.However, there are bigger issues. Pun is not a fan of anonymity. Sure people post anonymously because they're too cowardly to face the consequences of their actions, but I don't think that's the main reason. I think they post anonymously because no one would even care about their opinions if we knew who they were. It's the anonymity that gives their words power. When we don't know who's doing the back biting we have to sit up and take notice. Oh no, what if it's someone my friends list? What if it's someone on my extra special filter who I thought I could trust? What if it's the person I thought was really my bestest friend in the whole wide world, and she secretly hates me???!!!!And autumnyte questions the ethics of sharing of friends-locked posts with others. Do I think it's incredibly nasty and in poor taste to bitch about someone behind a friends locked post, where they can't defend themselves? Absolutely. And I'm not defending that behavior in any way. In fact, I'd even add that it's a pretty damn foolish thing to do, especially when someone knows that mutual friend(s) will be reading the post. But I really believe that sharing the contents of friends locked posts like that only leads to more trouble. In each of the instances I've seen lately, it only served to escalate things and make them worse. Because information tends to get exaggerated and whispered-down-the-lane, it's original meaning runs the risk of being hugely misinterpreted. This is just... wow. I've been in this fandom since the beginning and posted several Smallville wanks here (and on blurty and livejournal back in the day). But this is a level of hatred that surpasses even the early days when self-proclaimed BNFs reigned supreme. Amazing. (To clarify: I am referring to the general level of hatred aimed at Hope, not anything said by those I linked above.) ETA: Dude, that was fast. Infinityhope posted another entry chiding the reaction to his/her LJ. Also, s/he completely deleted the friendslist. I can't begin to say how surprised I am at the fact that those who consider themselves the least wanktastic are the ones who scream the loudest on my flist. Well, I really can't blame you. I do happen to have morals and ethics when it comes to treating people, like you and would probably have a fit if someone accused me of not. Well, I had hoped that those of you who were not hateful would help with stopping the hate. Nope. Not happening. You'd rather just be vex at me. It's fine.So another Hope leaves Smallville fandom. This is so circular! Post a comment in response: |
