Itty Little Fanficrants Wank
I hope this isn't an [info]i_wank since I commented, but I'm not the wank supplier, so here ya go.

New poster Ninaclaww doesn't see why she should have to translate sentences she writes in another language. A fictional language. Huh.

EDIT: It's gone.

Long time reader, first time post. This one's pretty short. I just received this review on my Final Fantasy X-2 fanfic;

From: -removed-

LESS ALBHED
i am not ganna take the time to read each and every word that u typed in albhed

1.) The character I'm writing about is Al Bhed, meaning she is going to talk in her native language. Guess what? It happens. WOW.

2.) I am not going to take the time to read each and every 3-letter word you can't figure out how to spell.

EDIT: The entire fic wasn't in Al Bhed, just a few lines scattered here in there. You know, like how it happens in the game.

Oh, well, I'm there wanking away, because I was so stunned by the concept that someone would fill her story with so much made-up video-game language that she had to include a link to translations and apparently not consider for one moment that other might be annoyed.

Really, even though I know responding to anything I see pop up on my flist from that comm is a very very bad idea, my brain will not stop my fingers from typing. I blame the "How can any be stupid as to know not to make tea! You use tea bags! Duh!" rant for weakening my resistance.

It was the bitterly condescending tone of the post that got to me.

"You don't know Al Bhed and that's my problem? Great, great, do I need to tie your shoes for you too, dumbass?"

I kind of want a link to the fic itself so I can see if it's as bad as I suspect.

Now you're just being silly. The translator is for other people too lazy to learn the language.

The post's gone, but is this the game language? Not so much a language as a code, then, and one that takes all of thirty seconds to crack...

I think s/he used the translator, but put in an English phrase and then selected "Al Bhed to English" for the translation. You can read it if you put it in and say it's English.

I understand. My friend told me about a fanfic that was littered with tons of fangirl Japanese. The author put the huge translation of all the words/phrases at the end of the fic. My friend didn't want to scroll all the way down the page every time she ran into a Japanese word that could have just been written in English.

A couple days ago, we were watching Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in the dorm lounge. Every time someone died or got hurt, we'd scream for them to use a Phoenix Down or a Hi-Potion.

So much pain could have been avoided...

It amuses me so much that in a community where almost every other post is about how people should stop writing in random foreign languages, she posts this and is shocked SHOCKED I TELL YOU that people don't agree.

Heh heh.

I'm not totally against the idea of having a different language in a fan fiction, but if it does appear it should be either:

a. Something nonconsequencial that the audience doesn't need to understand to enjoy the fan fiction. (For instance, a person say "Good morning!" to a character in another language.)

b. Cleverly translated in the prose done in such a subtle way as to clue the audience in on what was said without making them conciously aware of the fact that a translation was provided. (Tricky to pull off, but not impossible.)

c. A word of phrase that anyone familiar with the canon would know. (Honorifics for something like 'kagemusha' from the Samurai Deeper Kyo fandom. This should only be used when the word/phrase isn't something that doesn't translate properly.)

Of course we don't. We can't sit around and angst about how misuderstood our efforts are if people actually understand our fics!

I'm not really bothered by having to google "Al Bhed translator" in order to understand a phrase or two. Then again, I just don't give a shit because so much of what I've read of FFX fanfiction has been crappy and hasn't interested me enough for me to actually read any fic with Al Bhed.
