Television Recappers Without a Spine or an Actual Sense of Humor
I didn't want this part to get buried in the original wank, so I'm posting it anew.

On the front page of TelevisionWithoutPity, the latest Gilmore Girls recap trumpets "Gilmore Girls - Behold! The perfect recap. No, really. No. Really." On page 1 of the 21-page recap, Pamie quotes the "fan mail" she has been receiving. Two are the well-written-if-critical letters that started the whole brouhaha in the first place. The third letter on page 2? Notsomuch. Pamie explains:

Just wanted you to understand a bit the headspace I'm in tonight, as I sit down to recap the latest episode. While I'm fully aware you cannot please all of the people all of the time, I'm certainly trying my best to please the "Red Stater." That's a phrase they use at the television job I have these days. "Red Stater." I want you to know that's the phrase they use when they mean "total dipshit." I don't feel that way about you. I do try to write to the top of your intelligence. It's just that the powers that be sometimes think you couldn't find your way out of a used bookstore without help from Blue's Clues. Notes like that last gushing squee-fest aren't helping some of y'all's cases. So. In order to attempt to be as mainstream and satisfying to as many people as possible, without losing the audience who actually might enjoy my writing (I know -- "gasp!"), I will recap to two completely different audiences: first for the readers of TelevisionWithoutPity.com, and then for a site I'll just call...Television. (dot org?) To protect myself, however, I shall write my alternate recap under my fanfic-gushing pseudonym "Stac(e)y."
Pamie recaps the first scene and then tries to be amusing or snarky with "Stac(e)y's" take on it.
Stac(e)y: I lurve Lorelai's super-cute hat. She goes to Yale and goes to Rory's room and there's boyfriend!Doyle totally making himself at home because he's dating Bossy!Paris, who totally complains that Doyle's putting his wet laundry on her laundry (Dirty!!!1!), and I'm like, "Honey? If that boy put anything wet on me, I'd be grateful!LOL!" So then Lorelai says something REALLY FUNNY because Paris is talking about having s*x with Doyle and ohmigod it was hilarious, you should have seen it.
As one F_W anonymous put it,
This, from the group of people who called Aaron Sorkin a big baby for getting peeved with their trashing of his writing.

Oh noes, did negative feedback make us cry? Poor little Pamie.
Wow. Just... wow. The recap was not funny, not smart, not about the show itself, not anything but obviously sour grapes. Actually, that could be a lie - I couldn't get past the third page. Nor would I want to. Oh, it's also completely insulting to viewers of the show who, you know, dare to enjoy it.

Thanks, [info]jrs1980, for posting the link first. And also for saying "Pamie has passed Anne Rice on the ARTISTE wank scale."

Also, TWoP apparently "added a new server to the forums to balance the traffic load. You may be locked out of the forums until your ISP gets the new DNS info (usually no more than a day)." But then how will the minions be able to post about how funny and clever Pamie is?

ETA: Looks as if it's not the week to be an asshat. One of the contestants of The Apprentice posted a swipe at TWOP here, with a few posters joining in.
The insistence of the fanatics of TWoP that it's "television withOUT pity" doesn't hold water when you get away from the recaps and into the forums, where opinions that differ from the majority are slapped down, given warnings, and just plain banned. It is not at all uncommon for brand new posters to the forums on TWoP to be banned after their first post, simply for voicing a difference of opinion, or .. God forbid .. not reading the FAQ's before posting or .. sin of all sins .. not reading the previous 15 days of posts and/or 15 pages of a thread so as not to disrupt the "flow". (which is complete bullsh*t)
I wonder if Miss Alli will work it into one of her recaps? (Thanks to [info]napoleon for the heads up. I loved you in Animal Farm!)

Well, I guess now we know what she was working on while all her fellow recappers were coming to her rescue during the original wank. And to think, some of us were giving her credit in thinking she was keeping her mouth shut in order to rise above it.

As a blue stater in a red state, I feel that I have the credentials to declare that both versions? SUCKED ASS.

Add this to the trashing of Miss Alli on the Inside Pulse forums and TWOP is having a shitty week.

I just sent a resonably polite letter to Pamie about that recap. More or less said that I'm not a GG fan (true), but that her entire reaction to Stacey's mild critisism was thin-skinned, unfunny, and immature. Who knows I might get to inspire the next recap! I remember reading Pamie's first recap of the show and it was great. There were a couple of shows I hated reading the recaps for such as Ed, wherein the recapper decided to share with us stupid disgusting facts about his leftover food, but I always looked forward to the GG recaps because she enjoyed the show so much and it was refreshing. She could bring both the humour and the love. Now however, she's become someone altogether different and there's not a single recapper who has a good attitude that I know of, though I do like ABChao a little better. They don't know how to be self-deprecating and that's damn sad.

I think it's hillarious that she alientated half (oh hell, 60%? 75%?) of her readers. While I suspect that it will blow over, it wouldn't surprise me to see a mass exodus from the GG section at TWoP. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you, more like chewing it off and swallowing it. But to that I say, "BWAH!"

What I find so surprising is that mostly - these people are funny. They write clever snarks, mostly. You'd think that instead of defending their little Internet writing to the death, they'd be snarking.

I usually adore Pamie. I do like it when she inserts her own life in a little, but not to the extreme "here is a list of things in my purse and also a recap which I am suffering so much writing because my life is so hard." In this one, I found one good example of when I like her inserts - when she admits that she was like Rory while younger and led boys on by being their best friend.

I was actually looking forward to this recap. I thought there was plenty to snark on and question (Kirk?!) but the whole Stacey thing was tiresome. We get it, the fandom is stupid.

Also, when the discussion of other TWOPers we hate was going on, how come Kim never got discussed? I regret occasionally reading her "Real World" recaps because obviously she just has nothing interesting to say about the show. One would think a cesspool like the "Real World" would be a goldmine for trashing the cheesy segueways, the forced "confessionals", and the constant drunkenness. Instead, she mindlessly recaps, and then inserts a little "Last week I watched this show on Lifetime that ruled."

Couldn't they look for more talent? Jesus christ.

P.S. - I'm still on the djb train, though. His recaps of "Roswell" killed me.

Two ultra-wanky ganks from the recap
[info]isobelsomething
2005-02-26 08:37 am UTC (link)
See, here. Look. Man. Rory. You lead boys on. A lot. You make them think they're the only one even when you have another boyfriend. And part of my frustration is in seeing my past self in Rory here. I also thought it was important that everyone liked me, especially the boys, and wanted everyone to be my friend, even when it wasn't appropriate to be friends because the boy clearly liked me or the girl absolutely hated me. Shit, I suppose I'm doing it right now, staying up all night to double-recap because I spent the day getting slammed by ten tweens/lonely women who decided they'd reached The Tipping Point with my writing and wanted to start their own sad-ass revolution.

And:

Oh, there's a new recap for The O.C.. I'm gonna go write Djb and tell him how much he sucks. He might have forgotten since last week. I hate TWoP, don't you? They're so smug. And their recaps are sooooo long! It takes me all day to read them and I hate every word! Ugh! And they're so mean over there. They just hate on things just to hate, I think.

Heh.

I personally love Pamie's recaps, but the reaction of the recappers has been bizzare and downright thuggish. And I thought it would be even funnier in the context of this older Observer interview with Sars and Wing Chun

'Marti-bashing is the national sport of Television Without Pity's Buffy boards,' Bunting acknowledges. 'The things that people say about her are sometimes extreme - but that's the internet for you. Buffy's a cult show that inspires a great deal of fervency of all kinds but it was surprising to me that she would take it to heart. I thought she would be more like, "Whatever..."'

So some mildly condescending fangirl didn't like the caps and posted about it in the wrong place. I would have thought the T(WOP)PTB would have been more like, "Whatever..."

I stand by my statement. Only a small fraction of Anne Rice's readership will ever read her temper tantrum, whereas Pamie's recaps, for a lot of people, are the only place they're exposed to her writing. That would be akin to Anne printing her Amazon review as a foreword to her next book. (If she's still writing. I don't know.)

I find it ironic that Pamie is ripping on the adjective!name format when that phrase originated on the Angel fora and was used in many a recap over the years.

Any site that has "[insert recapper name here] Love Threads" is just asking for ridicule.

Okay, the love threads I can understand, because sometimes you think a recapper is awesome and you want to tell them/everyone. But it seems so false when no one is allowed to post dissenting opinions. Sure, no one wants to read pages and pages of hate about themselves. But if I knew I were getting 70-odd pages of love for my recaps because no one was allowed to disagree, that would devalue the love so much that it would be meaningless. All the admiration in the world means nothing if the people who aren't so happy aren't allowed to express their opinions too. You're missing half of the equation.

I can understand the board rules to an extent. They are really well-managed in some ways, and I know after six or more years it would get frustrating to have to tell people the same things over and over, so I can see how it would be tempting to turn it into the kind of dictatorship that TWoP is now. But that doesn't make it a good board, or right.
