Yet another HP house wank
A mouse reported this wank a couple days ago.

ataniell93 is a Slytherin fan. This irks [info]reader_zero (whom I know we have seen before) enough to "stand up to" [Read: Tell Off] [info]atanielle93 in her journal. [info]reader_zero is subsequently banninated.

I like this wank enough to report it because both sides are pretty wanky (although RZ totally started it). ataniell93 gives her side of it here and here, while [info]reader_zero rebuts here and here.

From [info]reader_zero (justifying the need to troll):

Enter ataniell93. She's a fangirl for the Harry Potter fandom. What's worse, she's a Slytherin fangirl.

Let me tell you a bit about Slytherin fangirls. They identify with and worship characters from the Slytherin House, characters we know from the books that Joanne Rowling expected us to clearly see as "teh villains". What with the Dark Lords and the rich bastards and the Death Eaters and the goons and all that.

Slytherin fangirls, (not to be confused with Slytherin fans. They're actually sensible, because they accept their House as the bastards they are) they don't like this. You see, they don't want to see themselves as evil...and yet they still find Alan Rickman and Tom Felton "teh sexors." So what they do is try to validate Slytherin by making them out to be...ehhhhhhhh not so bad.

.....

So I think to myself, I think "She can afford one dose of realty, right? One isn't going to harm her."

.....

I write to her, without ever insulting her personally, that she's obviously biased, that Slytherin-centrics are the worst people to do a House analysis because they build up Slytherins and take down Gryffindors. It's to be expected, they nearly all do. And it's simply because they choose to identify with a House that Joanne Rowling obviously intended us to realize that they were mostly not the good-guys. I then finished by telling her that she'd be better off accepting canon.

And then from ataniell93 (who gets a little self-righteous):

If I'm wrong about Gryffindor producing Crusader types, then why, I wonder, did Gryffindor Tower end up becoming a haven for obnoxious fundamentalists and racists that fell apart when the mods had driven everyone else out and started fighting with each other? Why did the Sugarquill have, for ages, a statement up on their site that theirs was the only site you could 'safely' find 'canonical fanfiction' and that other sites were full of disgusting porn? Why is the Sugarquill always staring on Fandom Wank? Nox et Lumos was never on Fandom Wank. I have never seen Sycophant Hex on Fandom Wank...

Why do Ron/Hermione shippers make up Evil Operative journals and troll the journals of Harry/Hermione shippers, and why do Harry/Hermione shippers fight back? Why do Gryffindorks care so much about whether or not their fanfic and their pairings are canonical? How can that be possible? Even if JKR does write Hermione settling down with one of the boys, it's still not going to happen the way it did in your fic!

The Slytherin fandom doesn't have ship wars. If people on an archive don't like the main thrust of that archive they go off and start their own.

The only time the Slytherin fandom ever shows up on FW is when Joanne makes the accusation reader_zero repeated in his rant, which is that we all have crushes on Tom Felton and Alan Rickman. And that we don't understand what she's trying to say. (Actually, Jo, we do understand what you're trying to say. It's just that you haven't convinced us. That isn't our fault. Since we're giving you our money anyway, be gracious and take it without insulting us, k?)

[info]nights_mistress summed it up nicely when the wank was originally reported:

Dear fandom,

The houses aren't real. Associate with them all you like. I'll still laugh at you.

Love
Nights Mistress.

The Slytherin fandom doesn't have ship wars because most of them, mercifully, for better or for ill, know that they have no chance of validation/any possibility of any sort of resemblance to canon and thus are all equally unsupported. The reason the R/Hr and H/Hr shippers fight so hard is that, given the way things are going, one is going to be right and the other isn't (although it'd be funny if neither were). Such is the upside and the downside of, you know, actually giving a shit for what the author writes rather than playing with your RPG that's so far afield it shouldn't even be called an AU.

Some of the people who identify themselves as Slytherin are so entertainingly batshit as to be worth reading, and the wanker above falls into that category. Oh, no! J. K. Rowling is insulting me personally! I wish I could beta for her!

With ya there. I actually don't think any of the Trio are going to pair off- then again, I don't expect Harry to actually survive book 7 either. (Actually, I wobble on this one a lot; seems like the odds are 50/50 either way right now.) I think everyone's going to be a -leetle too busy- in books 6 and 7 to worry about OMG HORMONES.

Er, that's not what I said, but okay. I said that the accusation that everyone in Slythfandom wants to fuck the actors and can't tell them apart from the characters is insulting. She does say that kind of thing rather a lot.

I never said I wanted to be her beta.

I think she needs to be edited better, and OOTP is Exhibit A. But I wouldn't take that job, because it wouldn't work. You can't edit someone whose thought processes are that different from your own. Well, not well.

PS: The reason we don't have ship wars is not because we know we have no chance of being canonical. It's because we don't CARE if we have any chance of being canonical.

There's a difference there, and it's not even subtle.

Frankly I think most of the people on my particular friendslist don't really care how the next couple books go. We're curious. We'll buy them. We might like them, we might not. I don't think OOTP was as good as GOF and I don't think GOF was as good as POA.

HBP will either reverse the trend, or not.

In no way do I think it's going to affect what anyone in my particular corner of the world decides to write.

Wait...when did aligning yourself with Gryffindor automatically make you a non-slash reader? Or make you an R/Hr or H/Hr shipper? Am I getting that right? Does this mean Slytherin types are slashers and Gryffindor types like het?

I'm hopelessly confused. I guess it's a good thing I don't care.

Oi, does anyone in HP fandom like both Gryffindor and Slytherin? It's seems like it's always one bashing the other. A lot of Snape (Slytherin) fans, for example, love telling everyone how great and justified it was that "sociopathic" Sirius died, while many Sirius (Gryffindor) fans decry that Snape is and will always be just a black-hearted, irredeemable bastard.

It's so hard to ship that pairing these days.

Gryffindors are ragingly aggressive drama queens who throw themselves off cliffs just for attention, and get away with murder because they're the golden children. Ravenclaws are passive-aggressive snarky assholes. Hufflepuffs are whiny, wishy-washy, and boring. Slytherins are untrustworthy goth-wannabe fucktards who can only whine and wheeze about how hooooorrrribly they get treated wah wah wah. Also, your ship, whatever it is, sucks and is wrong.

Since I have long ago decided that each and every Harry Potter fan is crazier than a baboon on fire, none of this is really any surprise to me. Also, I am a Snapefan, and we're all particularly wanky. I mean, even the other wanky Harry Potter fans think we're all mad, and they're right. And the Sirius fans are no better, they're all mental as well. Compared to this, the Draco fans are pretty sane - exept for some of the younger ones, of course, but as some of the Harry fans like to tell us, all teenagers are a bit crazy and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Meanwhile, Crouch Sr./Winky is still obviously the OTP.

The houses aren't real.

Yes, and neither is fandom. These are all simple concepts and ideas, but the fact remains that HP fandom is one of the largest around. Whether or not something is actually tangible has nothing to do with anything.

Love this wank. Totally wanky opening salvo by reader_zero, terrifically wanky response by ataniell93. Gotta love that call'n'answer shit, eh? Although in some respects it's a bit lame, since ataniell's response is the same every. fucking. time so really, it's just like poking at a beehive with a stick - y'know what you're gonna get. Still, I do love at particularly wanky stick-poking and getting to see ataniell's "slytherins are misunderstood and by the way did you know SQ sucks?" response once again.

Aw shucks... I kind of know reader_zero. He used to be in an RPG I was in... I suppose I'm not entirely surprised to see him up here.

They're both wanky as hell, but Slytherin fen annoy more than Gryffindor fen do, simply because of their constant "OMG OPPREZED" schtick. *plays violin*

oi, someone needs to give ataniell93 a dictionary definition of a generalisation, since it's damn nice to judge large parts of the fandom by the batshit insane parts just because you want to be pretentious. Sheeeeesh.
