Alas, poor FanficRants! Three times in 24 hours? Aren't you tired?
Well, since the potential George R. R. Martin wank I was watching died in infancy, I'll just have to settle for FanficRants.

Calluna gives a rant on the correct meaning on the word canon. One would assume that this would be preaching to the choir.

But Herongale objects.

To say that canon is, at the core, the "facts" of the story is not really an authoritative understanding of how the word has been used throughout history, and therefore makes you look a little silly for pinning down the meaning it has AT ONE MOMENT IN TIME and saying that this is what it ought to mean, forever and ever.

[info]herongale's on some serious drugs, isn't she? Clearly something like HP or LOTR etc where there's book canon and film canon would completely confuse her. Not to mention all the comicbook adaptations.

*teh English PhD student studying fandom, she go boom*

I saw that, you know. The willful misunderstanding and insistence on being offended gives us so much wank. I'm sure Herongale was taking this quite personally, as if a disagreement on the meaning of canon was a personal attack.

GRRM wank?! I didn't think he had much of a fandom. Are there LeatherPants!Jaime fangirls? On second thought, don't answer that as I think I'm happier living in ignorance.

I have much love for the OP, now.
I write a lot of AU fanfiction. In fact, I'm pretty sure all my fics are AU in some way or another...
But I still respect, acknowledge, and study the canon.
I mean, if I didn't bow to the canon in at least some ways, like... Personality of characters? Well, I might as well be writing original fiction.
...Which I do, though it's not online yet.

Actually, that is kind of true. However, there is a line to be drawn.

Gushing about how subtext is omgsocanon with fellow fangirls who are familiar with a series? Fine.

Telling a newcomer that subtext is canon, thus confusing them? Not good.

Basically, if you're going for an actual explanation, use the dictionary definition of canon. If you're just having fun fangirling it up with your friends, then screw the dictionary. XD

What really got my goat (and I tried to post a non-wanky response back, but think I was so annoyed that I failed) is the "I'm ignorant but I am going to legitimate my ignorance by saying that I can use a term any way I want because precise definitions merely indicate conservatism and territoriality" approach, and she posted here.</i> Some of her internal points are valid, but the whole is just .... gah.

Damn, Fanficrants is overwanking today. I saw this and wanted to post it, but I'd already done a report. Pity, because Herongale's funny as hell. All we need is for Tomakobriefs to step in, and we'll have Wanktopia on our hands.

I posted a similar rant a long while back. Why couldn't mine get this funny wanky? Not fair! *sniff*

This is the oldest debate in all fandom...

Many people don't know the difference between an objective statement (canon) vs a subjective one (fanon/subtext). Hence all the wankery.

I always took AU to mean a story where the author takes only the charas and maybe some elements of the original story and transplants them into a world that is completely unrecognizable from the canon one. So while making Harry and Draco a couple while they're attending Hogwarts is fanon, if they were placed in, oh--the world of Sailor Moon, that would be AU.

Or am I wrong?

This is really the best comment:

"Perhaps I don't run in the same circles you do, then. I could never conceive of a situation where I'd tell some Harry Potter fan that Ron/Hermione or Harry/Hermione is not canon and have "a million shippers" flame me."

Clearly this chic doesn't get out in the fandom much. I mean how the hell could you possibly be a reader of fanficriants and not ever have a clue about this beats me!
