Soap Opera Abortion wank
On a tip from an anonymouse in a previous post.

The OP seems reasonable enough and for once, people are complaining that abortion is being portrayed negatively, instead of the other way around.

Given the fact that it involves soap opera fans and abortion, it starts off relatively tame, with posters wondering if the show is becoming a Bush propoganda machine.

And then [info]violetmaiden shows up and decides that it's her moral duty to educate the sinners, especially posters who admit they've had abortions themselves.

I'm especially amused by violetmaiden's apparent belief that people are unaware that adoption exists and need to be educated about it. Especially people on a soap opera community. I mean, where the hell do long-lost identical twin siblings come from, if not adoptions?

So on the show the woman who had the abortion now has an infection and may be sterile? Argh. Now THAT's wanky. Way to present the facts, Days of Our Lives!

I do love the talk of it being a Christian show. Maybe that explains why Marlena was possessed by the devil with the green CGI eyes that one time!

That's not the worst distortion of reality, for a soap. I saw one which had a woman who was in such a horrible car accident that they thought she'd died, and then she came back without a single scratch, except that the crash had somehow destroyed her ovaries and now she was unable to have children.

But she was later killed by a falling chandelier, so it all evens out in the end.

This is why I respect my mother's wisdom. When I was a kid, I was forbidden to watch soaps, because she didn't want me to think they had anything to do with reality.

Well, except for one. She let me watch Dark Shadows. She figured I would throw all the adultery and uberangst in with the vampires and werewolves.

Well, if you're looking for accuracy in soaps, you'll be very disappointed. How many bloopers have I seen or heard pointed out? Days has put its audience through so many OMGWTFs that I'm surprised I still tune in.

Passions, on the other hand, I deliberately tune in for the OMGWTFs... =P

Oh, you should see Eastenders in the UK.
Some girl had an abortion, which of course wasn't referred to at all ('Are you ready for...the procedure?') and has since spent weeks afterwards crying about being a baby killer and going to hell, while everyone who knows looks shocked and makes tutting faces: 'How low can you sink?'
