To be honest, in fiction - original or fanfic - that is supposed to be realistic and set in the present, addressing real life issues in a realistic way, I'd probably think it was a little weird to see two characters going at it without at least mentioning bc unless they were in a long-standing relationship where, presumably, such things were already worked out. In smut, which has only the most glancing acquaintance with realism to begin with? In fantasy? In work written as an exercise in mood or tone? Not weird.

On the whole, I'd really rather not read about IUDs and female condoms in my smut. Stylistically, it lacks a certain something.

But given the staggering ignorance of birth control that I've seen among sexually active high-schoolers and college students, I have to admit that it would be really, really nice to have some accurate smut around. It may be against national policy to teach them about birth control in school, and they may be too bored to read Planned Parenthood pamphlets, but good old-fashioned copyright-violating, obscenity-law-challenging smutfic would get the info to stick in their pointy little heads.
