Prince of Tennis -- Prince of Forum Drama
Kind of a small wank, with many divided opinions, but wank nonetheless.

Over on AnimeSuki, people are chatting about a Prince of Tennis fandub released by the fansub group Anime-Otaku. It's not a very happy thread. Most people agree that the dub is ear-bleedingly awful.

And then, Microtic from A-O replies with some choice words, such as:

In response to us "wasting our time on dubs", please, STHU I am 15 episodes ahead of the group and needed something fun to work on. Plus, everyone else was busy doing their thing while I was working on it. With no delays due to it.

Replies start out fairly mild, but then things get a little nasty:

Microtic: Come to our IRC channel and say that. You'll see that a lot more people enjoyed it. And many will shoot you down where you stand.

Things get mean for a bit, but then eventually settle into some positive statements, "I want to help make the dub better", and little complaints. However, don't miss someone's Flash response to Microtic.

I (who have no idea what this series is about, but have heard lovely rumors about massive amounts of gay) downloaded that fandub last night thinking I was getting a real dub. I didn't even get through the OP.

It's about tennis. Boys playing tennis.

That is the entirety of the plot. It is cracky, wonderful love at times, and there's a lot of fun characters (and Teh Ghey) but still. Tennis.

There aren't any canon gay characters... But there's just so much gay-crack throughout, fangirls jump all over it (after the first few eps, it's so addictive, it's frightening).

But yeah. Plot? Tennis. That's about it.

I loved the fan dub. It was so hilariously bad, I couldn't stop laughing throughout the entire thing.

But eh, this just adds to my theory that most people who work on fansubs need to get bitchsmacked off their high horse.

But tweaking bits of the dialogue so that they sound as if they were coming from the mouth of a real person does not mean the original intent of the writers is lost. Word-for-word translation does not necessarily mean you will end up with the most faithful and enjoyable end product. You have to keep in mind that the main purpose of an English dub is to make a foreign-language product accessible and enjoyable to English ears.
