"Roger Ebert is the BIGGEST RACIST ever! He didn't even like Pootie Tang!" My first wank! This was actually brought to my attention at work today. Two weeks ago, Roger Ebert gave "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" a one-star review. The main target of his criticism is the character of Grandma Medea, who incidentally is played by the movie's male screenwriter, Tyler Perry, in drag. Ebert describes the character as "a tall, lantern-jawed, smooth-skinned, balloon-breasted gargoyle with a bad wig" who "seems like an invasion from another movie - a very bad another movie." And Ebert certainly isn't alone, as the film receives plenty of other negative reviews. Ebert receives more e-mails about the review than for any he's ever written, out numbering “Fahrenheit 9/11”and “Passion of the Christ” put together. The Yahoo movie boards overflow with positive reviews for the movie, many of which address Ebert's review directly. Some make the valid point that Madea is an established character in Perry's works, and that the movie is intended for a specific audience. But others simply cry RACISM! Because, obviously, a negative review of a "black movie" by a white critic is an insult to the black community at large. With over 3,300 reviews on the Yahoo site, there are plenty of other gems to be found, including: "The critics must not like the black folk?!?" "Jesus went through the same crap" "I admire this movie just the way I admire the "Passion of Christ," by MEL GIBSON." "To make y'all haters even madder I hope he wins an oscar!!!!!" The overall response is so overwhelming that Ebert even submits a follow-up article defending his his views. But of course, the uproar from Yahoo and Ebert's site is nothing compared to the glorious IMDB wank! In a thread entitled Certain Things White People Just Don't Understand, we learn (among other things) that black people invented fire, white people invented the Electric Slide, Sweden is the penis of the world, "X-Men" is a thinly-veiled commentary on homosexuality, there are no penguins in heaven, and Condaleezza Rice once lived in Russia - or DID she? Oh, and anyone who watches MAD TV and enjoys it shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion. And of course, where there's wank, there's mockery. Which, if nothing else, provided the awesome quote that appears in the title of this post. :-) |
