stealing is okay if it's all for your children!
First wank report! And oh, it's a good one.

The man thief in black fled across the desert internet, and the fan artist followed...

Our story begins...

Once upon a time, there was a Cowboy Bebop/anime fan named [info]bigbigtruck. [info]bigbigtruck liked to draw pretty fan art, among other things. She was particularly well known in the [relatively] small CB fandom for her distinctive fan art style. She also made that funny video "Failed Experiments In Video Editing," which probably every vidder on amv.org has seen.

Well that sounds all fine and dandy, so where's the wank?

Well, one day [info]bigbigtruck happened to stumble across the a surprise not entirely unlike finding your planet is about to be demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass: A company called ANIMEGINATION decided to steal her artwork and sell it without permission on shitty t-shirts promote her artwork on eBay.

This "RARE COWBOY BEBOP ANIME MANGA TSHIRT T-SHIRT" is sitting pretty at US $23.98, with no bids as of yet. Apparently, you can "find the same image on a t-shirt for less money, however, you get what you pay for."

[info]bigbigtruck, as you might guess, is pretty indignant about this whole thing. She contacts the sellers, and even gets a reply. And believe you me, someone paid to write for a living couldn't come up with stuff this rich:

"So far, I’ve sold one shirt at $18.98 and advertised it about 20 times so I’m actually at a net loss right now. So, does that mean you owe me money? ;0)"

"Actually, I’d be happy to send you a shirt so that you can show off your artwork at no cost to you."

"I actually am a one person operation who hand makes each shirt to fund my kids’ anime needs."

And then, a secret twist is revealed!

ANIMEGINATION is two-timing poor [info]bigbigtruck in her "it's all for the children!" thievery! It seems one [info]dizziness has already had her fan art stolen and sold on t-shirts as well! Where does it stop?! Is no fan art safe from those vulter-like t-shirt dealers?

What's next, Charlie Brown?

Well, someone suggests hiring a 'team' to take care of it.

But there's always all that crap you have to go through to get somebody's auction cancelled.

One industrius commenter finds and posts the seller's personal information (nabbed from ebay, I assume), although the email link doesn't work.

Is she perhaps a diaper-drug-smuggler too?

Or just your average internet asshat worthy of new and creative words I've never heard before, like 'chode'?

It's a sad day in Mudville, when your kids' anime needs can't be met through moral, honest, and upstanding ways of money making. You know, like writing dirty stories for porn magazines, or telemarketing.

I be one of those vidders who damn near peed herself over "Failed Experiments." And got "Papa Loves Mambo" stuck in her head for a week.

This makes me want to give [info]bigbigtruck lots of internet cookies for her trouble, and beat that seller's ass over a bedpost until she recites every DBZ attack name in Engrish.

The funny thing is I think this woman is genuinely clueless about the concept that artists, y'know, OWN their art. She just doesn't get it. When you have someone like Banrai or KAK, the art thievery is more of a stalking thing, wanting the person's identity. In this case it's got nothing to do with the artist at all-- this dumbass sincerely believed that artists don't care if you re-sell their artwork without permission.
Also, $30 for a t-shirt seems awfully steep. I know some people pay that much, but that's for t-shirts that actually COME from Japan. And it's still too much.

Upon getting over my inital horrification, I went and visited her ebay store. And her website. It looks like all she's doing is downloading pictures from the internet and silkscreening or otherwise affixing these pictures to T-shirts (and other things) and selling them. Including things that appear to be fanart, but could easily be mistaken for offical type pictures. Which she has watermarked up, to prevent stealing, I suppose, so she must have *some* clue about copyright law.

But besides the wankyness of stealing from fanartists, I seriosuly doubt she has permission from Quentin Tarantino to be shilling things with Kill Bill splashed all over them or from Joss Weedon to be selling Buffy merch.

Maybe someone should contact Fox. They tried to halt Buffy fanfic, I can only imagine what they'd do if someone was actually *profiting* off Buffy without permission.

I am utterly baffled by this woman's stupidity. Would she do this if it was original art? It really doesn't help than fanart isn't the most legal thing (though it's hardly the most illegal either). Someone really ought to clue in the companies to this. They own the licenses, they make the profits, they come down hard on anyone else flogging their stuff. Even fanart ripoffs.

I can only imagine the shirts look like complete ass, besting CafePress shirts for lack of quality, given that they're iron ons printed from 72 dpi images.

This, unfortunately, is the same crap Kingdom-Shirts on eBay was trying to pull a few months back--they were selling Inuyasha t-shirts with Kuro's artwork on them. Since they were also selling Fox-licensed images on t-shirts, I finked them out to the law firm handling Fox's representation (because the Fox lawyers might as well be good for something, right?). Noticeably, it doesn't look like they're selling t-shirts any longer.

Thanks for all the amusing comments.

To be fair, I honestly don't wish this person any harm... it just baffles me that "hey, you're using my artwork without permission" wasn't met with a simple "oops my bad - I took it down".

Oh, look look! (Past the endless images of pillows):

Every week we have three to four sellers joining Ebay, copying our images, our auction wording and our pricing trying to look like us. Please beware, you get what you pay for. So don't confuse other sellers with us. Many of these other sellers have positive feedback.

Oh nose! They r steling her ebay auctionss!!1111
